Franziska dragged Miles into her room and closed and locked the door behind them. Miles wondered what this was about but he kept quiet, waiting for the girl to tell him what was going on.
"I'm going to show you something," Franziska said with a serious look on her face. "You can't tell Papa about this, no matter what."
And she started to take off her shirt.
"What?! Franziska!" Miles immediately closed his eyes.
"I wasn't going to get naked, fool!" Franziska snapped, irritated.
Miles kept his eyes shut as she grabbed his hand and placed it on her chest. He was relieved to feel cloth under his fingers and not bare flesh, and as she pressed his hand more firmly against her small breast he could feel a hard... ring?
His eyes flew open and he looked down at Franziska in shock. "You got your nipple pierced?"
She flashed him a grin as she let go of his hand. "Yes." The grin disappeared and was replaced by a defiant expression. "And Papa is never going to know about it."
And then Miles understood. This small act of rebellion was the only way she had of defying her father's authority, and knowing that she's done something he wouldn't approve of and kept it a secret from him would keep her going a little longer. It would help her not to crack under the pressure of living up to her father's expectations. And sharing this secret with Miles would bring the two of them closer together, because he would be called upon in the near future to help her protect her secret.
