Sinking

Prompt: #009 Her

Notes: Written for 50scenes on livejournal. Spoilers for "Twilight".

He didn't know if he could live without her. It had never before crossed his mind that he would have to – not like this.

This shouldn't have happened. This…well, they should have found a better way for it to go down.

If they had, Kate wouldn't be…

He couldn't even think the word. He really couldn't. Thinking it would mean it was true. Thinking it would mean that she was really...that it had really happened.

He didn't think he could handle that, and even as he stared blankly at the spot on the roof where it had taken place, he felt tears stinging the back of his eyes and a lump forming in his throat.

He closed his eyes.

Kate.

He needed her.

He needed for this to not be true. He needed to wake up. This had to be a nightmare – one that he would laugh at, with Kate, when he got in to work. That had to be it. He was dreaming.

Any second now, he'd wake up in a pool of sweat, tangled sheets pinning him to the bed and the darkness of his room enveloping him.

He waited.

Nothing.

A few minutes longer.

His heart sunk in his chest, desperately waiting.

Still nothing.

His knees buckled out from underneath him and his tears finally broke free.

It was real.
