Always His Son!

By No1butjoe

The agony in his head was intense and he couldn't hold in the cry of pain much longer. Eyes tightly closed, he forced himself to a sitting position, trying hard to ignore all the commotion around him. There wasn't much fight left in him, seeing as it took all his energy just to sit up. His eighteen year old body was worn and broken, numerous abrasions adorned his arms, legs, and chest. Opening his eyes halfway, he could see his opponent gathering speed and heading straight for him and ready to deliver the final and fatal blow. He anxiously tried to move, but it was no use. Although he was unwilling to accept defeat, the young man knew his time was up.

Suddenly, his eyes widened a bit as a thought struck him. There was only one person who wouldn't let a little thing like this stop him. Only one person who cared enough to come running if he called. If he could focus for just a few minutes, he might be able to get a link across.

Dad?

Gohan, what is it? I just felt your power level drop.

I think I might've gotten in over my head. I-I-.

Hang on, Son. I'm on my way.

Gohan broke the link and collapsed back onto the ground, breathing heavily from using so much energy. He knew it. Goku would come for him. His eyes closed for a brief second before opening again, only to look up into the worried eyes of his father.

"Dad . . . " he tried to speak, licking his lips a few times. "Behind . . . you."

That done, Gohan mercifully passed out.

"Gohan?"

His eyelids were heavy, making it difficult for him to open them. A hand wiped his hair to the side of his face, while another one held his hand. Struggling against the darkness, Gohan managed a small squeeze, which caused cries of delight from the person beside him. Finally, after much difficulty, his eyes opened and he looked up at his father with a smile.

"Thanks, Dad," he said, gratefully. "I couldn't hold on much longer."

Goku smiled.

"That's what fathers are for, Gohan," he said. "There was no way I was letting you give up without a fight. But, I'm proud of you, son."

Gohan's lips curved up into a small, pain-filled smile. Goku smiled back. No way was he leaving his son alone for an instant. Some people would've reprimanded him for his choice, but they just didn't understand. No matter how old Gohan got, he'd always be his son.
