A/N: Me and my deathfics. Just wanted to do a little introspection, as I usually do when first entering a fandom. It's Franz's POV on that scene in episode 18, but I changed up a few tiny details for my convenience.

Disclaimer: I do not own Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo; neither the book nor the anime.

Dawn cascades over a broken sky.

Albert is crying, uncontrollably, like the child he is at heart; chin soaked, lashes clumped, snot dripping out of his nose. Franz would laugh if he thought he could. As it is, his head feels like someone pumped it full of helium, and there are spots in his vision. These are his last moments.

Albert is tying strips of cloth over his wounds, again and again (they will not help), but the blood is too fast for his fingers. Franz is light headed, woozy, and wants to speak more than he already has, to tell his friend so many things, but his mind and his body no longer work in conjunction, are no longer in sync. Albert lifts him, envelopes him a light hug that is just firm enough, and he is still crying, crying. Franz's bloodied cheek is pressed against Albert's smooth, clean one, and just for a few seconds, he tasks himself to turn his head those few inches, so he can kiss the warm cheek, slight and barely there.

He hopes that Albert knows he would do anything for him. He wanted that man's blood on his hands, for Albert. He failed, but he hopes that Albert knows.

Albert turns to the side; their eyes meet. Despite all his friend's words of optimism, they both know this is the end.

Dawn comes like a herald of death, and Albert is crying. Franz wishes he would smile.

A/N: Anything you have to say is nice. :)
