An Otherworldly Fanfiction – Oneshot piece

Kagome studied the pets in their wire cage displays. She had always loved animals, but their shrine home meant she wasn't ever allowed to keep one. Scratching the head of a creamy coloured kitten with a black diamond on her forehead, which mewed at her, she left the pet shop for home.

As she headed down the semi-crowded street, students returning home from school and others from their jobs, a sound caught her attention and she stopped momentarily to stare into the dark alleyway leading off the street.

Clunk

Yes, it sounded like an animal. She couldn't be sure, but it sounded as though it were limping. Looking around, she ducked into the alley, looking along the lines of rubbish bins and back of shops for the cause of the noise.

Clunk

It came again. The sound of objects being knocked together as something passed. Kagome whirled and ran towards the sound. As she skidded to a halt, she spotted the seemingly white-grey dog which took one look at her. She stared into the creature's eyes. It looked too intelligent… too intelligent for a dog anyway.

She knelt, noticing as she lowered herself, the deep, bleeding cut on the dog's leg. The dog snarled however as she reached out and she tried to speak soothingly.

"It's okay…"

The dog gave her an oddly skeptical look, but it was in no position to argue as she picked it up and ran home, thoughts of bandages, baths (hmm) and what her mother was going to say tumbling through her head.

"Oy, you, stay in there."

Kagome muttered as she dunked water over the dog for the last time. The dog gave her an annoyed glare and shook itself, water spraying everywhere.

Kagome hadn't checked its gender yet, the dog skittering away each time, but she was pretty sure it was male from the looks of him. Anyway though, his coat now shone with a nice silvery sheen, even without the use of soap.

She stood back a moment to look at her handiwork, then made a face and went inside to change. She was lucky her mother had more sympathy for the injured dog than annoyance at having to somehow accommodate the animal in the shrine grounds. What was she going to name the thing though?

She had left the dog in the sun to dry more thoroughly as she changed but when she got back, was surprised to see a person sitting where the dog was previously. She couldn't see his face, all she could see was his back, but she looked over the red haori and hakama and the silver hair and… she stopped …. the ears on his head.

"Hello? Who are you?"

Golden-amber eyes met hers as the person turned to look at her. She noticed his claws and he revealed his fangs as he grinned at her.

"Hello, Kagome. I'm Inuyasha."

Adventures were about to begin.
