"Put the phone down."
"No. You're done keeping me on this island."
Kate watched the exchange between Jack and Locke. She slowly moved closer to Jack. Locke wasn't watching her.
"I will kill you if I have to."
"Then do it John."
"Jack." Kate knew that look. Locke wasn't going to back down. Kate concentrated on Locke's gun. If she could only predict when he would fire.
Jack slowly raised the phone to his ear.
Kate heard someone respond.
"I'm sorry, Jack."
"No!" Kate screamed, putting herself in front of Jack. She heard the gun fire, but she didn't feel anything, she didn't hear anything. It was like she was already dead.
She suddenly felt herself coming back, and she opened her eyes to find Jack cradling her head in his arms, positioning her head in his lap.
He was moving his lips, but she couldn't hear him, she couldn't hear the shocked cries coming from the other survivors.
Suddenly she gasped for air, feeling a sharp pain in her midsection.
"Jack." She croaked, and then she could hear him.
"It's okay Kate, it's all right. I got you."
Kate moved her head slightly to the left, watching Locke grab the phone that had fallen from Jack's grasp. Locke turned the phone off, and walked away unnoticed.
Kate felt herself slipping away again, she wanted so much to just slip away. The sky turned dark, and Jack's face grew blurry.
"No, no, no, no. Stay with me Kate, you gotta stay with me!!!!" Jack pleaded with her. "Not now. You can't."
"Jack." Kate knew what she wanted to say and she wanted so much to say it. Those three words that she had found so difficult to say, was now almost impossible to say. She licked her lips in an attempt to stay awake, but she knew that this was it. No matter what Jack did, he couldn't save her this time. She had saved him.
"It's okay Jack." Kate whispered. She felt the tears falling from her eyes, she felt Jack's fingers tenderly wipe them away. He knew it now too. He knew that this was the end.
"Kate." Jack could only manage to utter one word, one word. But Kate understood. She felt the pain and love radiating from him.
Kate managed to give him a feeble smile. "Jack, I love." Kate stopped and coughed. Jack wiped something from her mouth. It was her blood. Her blood was on his hands. She knew him. She knew that he would never forget that. He would blame himself. She closed her eyes, fighting the sob rising in her chest. She had to be strong. Just this once.
"I love you too Jack." Kate sighed, opening her eyes again. She struggled to memorize his face. His eyes. His mouth. She desperately wanted to see him smile, just one more time. Just for her.
"I love you more." Jack returned her smile. He needed to be strong too, for her. He would hate for her last memory of him to be of him sobbing over her. He could do that later, but not now.
"Promise?" Kate coughed violently, spitting up more blood.
"Promise."
There was so much more that she wanted to tell him, but this would have to do. She felt herself fading away. She could finally rest.
Jack could no longer control his sobs as he watched her close her eyes. He felt her grip on his hand loosen, and he lost it.
He bent over her frantically in an attempt to kiss her. He met her lips and felt her softly kiss him back before she faded away.
This was it. This was the end. Without her, he was nothing.
