Ch 13 Dominoes Fall
"Addy! Conan! Are you two okay?" Dr. Agasa exclaimed after he saw Ran and Shinichi. Tears began to reform in Ran's eyes, and she got into a worse crying fit than before. Shinichi wrapped his arm around her shoulders, and they made their way to Dr. Agasa's car. After Dr. Agasa turned the ignition, he began to make his way back to his house.
The pitter-patter of the rain began to make a beat against the window. In Ran's mind, however, the sound didn't match the pounding of her heart. The sound filled her ears as they made their way back to Agasa's house, only one thing ran through everyone's minds, 'How are we going to tell Kazuha what happened?'
Shinichi gave Ran's shoulder a squeeze, and Ran began to cry even harder. Shinichi wished that he could do something to cease the sadness in Ran's heart. He knew, however, that nothing he could say would ease her sadness. Ran was one of the most giving people he knew, and it was only natural for her to be upset over the fact Kazuha's parents were in danger.
'We need to act, and we need to act fast,' Shinichi thought. He put his right hand on the side of the door and began to create a drumming rhythm that went along with the rain.
The car stopped suddenly as they were in front of Agasa's house. Dr. Agasa made his way over to the back door, and opened it so the two shrunken youths could be covered from the rain. The group of three trudged to the front of the door. Shinichi pulled at the doctor's lab coat when he didn't hear Ran's footsteps beside his.
Ran stood ten feet behind them. Her wet dress was clinging to her form, and she was giving herself a consoling embrace. Ran felt frozen in time, the only thing keeping her with everyone was her drum-beating heart, and her warm salty tears.
The door flew open, and Heiji stood there, and he gave Shinichi a questionable look. He then looked around and saw Ran standing in the rain.
"Baka! Are ya just goin' to let her stand there?" Before Shinichi could answer Heiji's question, Heiji made his way around the two, and grabbed Ran.
"Ran, what's going on?" Heiji asked in a concerned voice. The only answers he received were her sobs. Shinichi also made his way over to Ran, and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"Let's go inside, Ran. You're going to get sick if you stay out here much longer." Shinichi said, and then led her inside. Ran followed him with a bit of reluctance.
When they made their way inside, they noticed Ai and Kazuha sitting on the couch. Dr. Agasa searched for a towel to give to Ran. He then handed her a soft, white one, and wrapped it around her wet form. Holding the white towel around her soaked body, Ran sat down next to Kazuha, tears were falling out of her eyes.
"Hey Ai, Hattori, can you guys come here for a minute?" Ai's eyes widened, and Heiji gave Shinichi a look that said, 'what the hell is goin on?' Shinichi opened the door to Ai's lab, and Heiji went inside. Ai shut the door gingerly.
"Kudou, what the hell is goin' on?" Heiji asked, "First, ya have Ran cryin' up there, and now ya acting weirder than normal. What gives? Was ya date really that bad?" Shinichi gave Heiji a glare before continuing.
"Ran is not upset with our date," Shinichi sighed before continuing, "She's upset because she's worried about Kazuha's parents."
"Dude! They're goin to America to be with our parents, they'll be fine."
"I would share the same sentiments as you if it wasn't for the fact that they didn't get off the plane that they were supposed to be on."
Heiji's eyes widened, and his jaw dropped.
"Wait, are you saying something happened to Kazuha's parents?" Ai asked.
"My dad called one of his friends in the Osaka airport and they said that the cameras didn't even capture them arriving at the airport."
"Baka!" Heiji shouted as he grabbed Shinichi's shirt, "Are you saying that they have her parents?"
Shinichi looked down towards the ground.
"Heiji, what other conclusion could there be?" Ai said. She pulled Heiji away from Shinichi.
"How the fuck are we going to tell Kazuha?" Heiji asked. Before anyone could say anything else, Kazuha's scream was heard from upstairs. Everyone raced towards the door, and threw it open.
"Please Ran! Tell me it's not true!" Kazuha screamed, "This ain't true! This ain't true!"
Ran continued sobbing from her place on the on the sofa.
"I'm sorry Kazuha," Ran sobbed, "Shinichi got a call from his dad saying they didn't even make it to the airport," Ran sobbed. Kazuha fell to the floor, her own sobs began filling the room. Heiji bent down and wrapped his arm around her as she continued to convey the feelings of her broken heart.
Shinichi pulled Ai into another room and closed the door.
"Haibara, Hattori informed me of something earlier today that troubles me." Shinichi said as he placed his hands into his pockets. Haibara grew rigid at the look in Shinichi's eyes.
"I don't like your tone. What happened exactly?" Ai said as she held her breath.
"A woman named Hara Nanami attempted to hire the old man to find her cat Noguchi." Shinichi said solemnly. Ai's widened open in shock.
"Noguchi, that's…" Ai trailed off, not knowing what else to say.
"Exactly, Haibara. What are we going to do about Kogoro? The Detective Agency is no longer safe," Shinichi said as his eyes flashed toward the door. Haibara let out a deep sigh.
"There's nothing we can do right now."
"What do you mean there's nothing we can do right now? We have to do something! Kazuha's parents went missing, and now we have to worry about the safety of Kogoro too?" said Shinichi, raising his voice.
"Ssssshhh!" Haibara said as she pointed toward the door, "Ran is freaked out enough already worrying about the safety of Kazuha's parents. If she hears that her father may be in danger as well, it may give her an anxiety attack. That girl has too much on her plate as it is."
The door opened with a creak. Ran stood outside the door. Tears began to make her way down her face, and her lip began to quiver. She began to take in deep breaths. Kazuha wrapped her arms around Ran, and in turn, Ran embraced Kazuha. Both girls began to sob again, and Shinichi looked defeated. Ai placed a sympathetic hand on Shinichi's shoulder, and Shinichi gave a sigh.
"What are we going to do," Ran cried, "first Kazuha's parents are taken away, and now we have to worry about my dad's life being in danger? I don't know how much more of this I can take!" Ran threw her hands in the air. "What are we going to do?" She asked herself.
"I do not want to lie to you, Ran, so I'm going to tell you how it is." Ai said, "I honestly do not know what is going to happen concerning your dad, however, we are going to do as much as we can, okay?"
"What exactly happened in his office that has everyone so concerned?" Dr. Agasa asked, stepping behind Ran and Kazuha.
"Aight, this is what happened," Heiji butted in, taking a step forward, "So Shinichi had ta get ready for his date with Ran, so I agreed to go inside and see what the old man's client wanted. She was a woman who desperately needed to search for her cat, Noguchi…" Heiji was cut off by Ran.
"Wait, so you think my dad is in danger because my dad wouldn't help her find her missing cat? I'm sorry, but if this woman lost it over that, then she obviously was a lunatic before all of this started."
"Ran, wait a second, will ya?" Heiji said. "That's not what we're freaking out about. The woman wasn't lookin' for her cat, she wanted to come see if you and your family were still alive."
"Wait, what?" Ran asked, her eyes wide in shock.
"Yeah, the woman is a part of the Black Organization that we're hiding from. Whether or not she's high ranking, I don't know. The fact that she named her pretend cat Noguchi is what concerns us."
"Wait, Noguchi? What's so wrong about the name Noguchi? Is that the boss's name or something?" Ran asked.
"No," Haibara said, "The members of the Black Organization affectionately nicknamed the boss, 'Ano Kata.' Noguchi comes from the name Noguchi Ujo, a Japanese poet. He is famous here in Japan for writing poems and children's songs. Along with Kakushu Kitahara and Yaso Saijo, he is considered one of the three great poets and children's song-writers here in Japan. One of the songs he wrote, Nanatsu no ko, is known throughout the organization. The boss even has his number set to the beginning tone of the song."
Ran and Kazuha gasped. Even though they shouldn't be so surprised that a member of the Black Organization approached Kogoro, the fact that they're manifesting themselves more took them off guard. They didn't think they would be so brazen. Ran let out a gasp.
"My mom! What if they go after my mom?" Ran cried, putting her head in her hands. Shinichi wrapped his arm around Ran and gave her a comforting squeeze.
"She'll be fine, Ran. I don't think they would go after her." Ran pushed Shinichi away.
"How can you not be concerned about her? Kazuha's parents knew nothing about this, yet they were taken away! What if that happens to my mom too?" Ran hiccupped. Shinichi let out a sigh and ran his hand through his hair. Dr. Agasa put his hand on Ran's shoulder.
"Of course we're concerned, Ran." He said while he gave her a few pats.
Haibara also walked up to Ran, and pulled her into an embrace.
"Ran, I don't know what will happen to your mom. I don't know what's going to happen to Kazuha's parents. The one thing that I do know is that we are going to do our best to make sure that they can't hurt anyone else." Ai said, rubbing circular motions onto Ran's back. Ai pulled away, and looked at Ran. Ran had a smile on her face, despite the tears still freefalling.
"What are we gonna do now?" Heiji asked.
"All we can do right now is wait," Shinichi said, "and besides, Beika University is going to be playing soccer against the Nagasaki University. Let's go watch!" Everyone agreed to kick back and relax.
While the guys and Dr. Agasa went to turn on the TV, Kazuha, Ran, and Ai were preparing snacks for everyone. Kazuha placed all of the plastic cups on the counter, while Ran opened the refrigerator to get something for everyone to drink.
"Here's some Coke, is everyone okay with that?" Ran asked as she eyed Ai. Ai always made sure that Dr. Agasa ate healthy as of late, and had prohibited him from drinking any soda.
"Yeah, go for it," Ai said, which surprised Ran. Not wanting to question Ai's judgment, she poured some ice cubes into the cups before pouring the soda.
"Do you guys want the crinkly kind or regular?" Ai said as she held up two bags of chips.
"Definitely crinkly!" Kazuha said as she reached for the green bowl. Ai opened the bag of chips, and then poured them in.
"Do you guys think this is enough?" Ran asked as she held the other bag of chips.
"I think for right now, we have enough." Ai said, "If we start running low, we'll open the other bag."
The girls quickly put ice inside of the drinks, and then began to make their way into the living room. As they sat down, they discovered that Nagasaki had won the coin toss, and they picked the field facing north.
They thought watching the match between Beika and Nagasaki would be something to help everyone relax after everything that happened. However, that soon ended after Nagasaki scored the first goal.
"Are you kidding me? That player was offsides! That was as bright as day, everyone saw it! What were the refs thinking?" Shinichi yelled, and then let out a sigh. Everyone else was on their place on the sofa, and looked at Shinichi, and sighed.
"Dang, Shinichi really gets into his soccer," Kazuha said, amazed at how fast Shinichi got worked up.
"Believe me, this is him being calm," Ran said with a laugh. Shinichi glared at her, and then returned his attention to the game.
"You should've been there when Japan was in the World Cup. I've never seen Shinichi get so worked up." Dr. Agasa said, chuckling at the fact that Shinichi glared at him when he brought up that memory. The Japanese soccer team didn't have much luck when it came to soccer, and it was a surprise that they made it. Even though they lost pretty early in the championship, Shinichi was upset regardless.
"Typically, it's best to not talk to Shinichi when his team loses." Ran said as she picked up a potato chip. Just then, a midfielder from Beika kicked the ball to their forward. Ogata, the forward, managed to get past some of Nagasaki's players, and kicked the ball into the goal. Everyone began cheering as Beika caught up with Nagasaki.
When it got to halftime, Beika had four goals, while Nagasaki had two. Everyone was in high spirits during the second half of the game. During that time, Nagasaki had managed to catch up to Beika, and they were four on four. Everyone was tense during the last ten minutes of the game. As they watched the timer count down the minutes, everyone waited with bated breath to see if Beika would score another goal.
As it was made known they were at the last minute of the game, the game grew more intense. In the last ten seconds, Beika scored another goal. Everyone cheered as Beika was announced the winner. Shinichi grabbed Ran, and pulled her to him. He then grabbed her face, and pulled her into a passionate liplock. Heiji and Kazuha gave each other a high five, and Heiji wrapped his arm around her.
Their celebration stopped as they heard three loud, quick knocks at the front door. With a swoosh, a piece of paper managed to make its way through the crack under the door. Dr. Agasa picked it up, and then brought it over for everyone to see. He handed the paper to Shinichi. Opening up the piece of paper, he noticed it was a letter. Everyone gathered around him to see what it said.
Kudo,
One after another, the dominoes fall. The silver bullet swiftly makes its way through each of them, right through the heart of each and every one. Attempting to get to the center, it creates a spiral, going round and round. A dove flutters by, noticing the chaos. Saying nothing, as doves are pure and innocent creatures, flies away understanding everything. The dove will reveal all after the 6th time the clock chimes in the dark morning.
Kaito Kid
"Wait, Kaito Kid knows what's going on?" Heiji asked, surprised.
"I guess he does," Ran said as she stood by Shinichi. She took a cursory glance at the piece of paper in his hands. The typical caricature of Kaito Kid was by his signature.
"At least we know it's actually Kaito Kid," Kazuha said as she yawned.
"Maybe we should all go to bed," Haibara said as she yawned, "It's been a pretty long day." Ran and Kazuha nodded, and the girls went to sleep. Dr. Agasa also followed suit. Heiji and Shinichi, however, stayed up and began to whisper.
"Hattori, I need to go see Kaito Kid." Shinichi said. He then turned and looked at the girls who were already beginning to fall asleep.
"I know, Kudo, but do you think it's wise to go by yourself this late at night?"
"The letter is only addressed to me." Shinichi gestured toward the letter, playing with it in his hands.
"I see what you're saying, but maybe it might be a good idea if I go with you to a certain point. I don't think it's safe to walk around freely anymore."
"It's not safe anymore, Hattori, but we have to do what we have to do. Maybe he knows something."
"I wouldn't doubt it." After resting for a bit, the two detectives decided it would be best to head out. They silently closed the door, and made sure it was locked before leaving. They then began to head outside of the property, and then go to the Tokyo Tower. There were a lot of people out and about, but that was to be expected on a weekend. They then continued to walk towards their destination, oblivious to the pair of eyes following them.
As they finally reached Tokyo Tower, they went inside and made their way up via elevator. After the elevator took them up as far as it could go, they then made it to the roof and waited for Kaito Kid to grace them with his presence. It wasn't even five minutes until they saw a dove landing gracefully on the rooftop. As it chimed 1:15 that morning, Kaito Kid appeared in front of the two detectives.
"What's going on?" Shinichi asked him.
Kaito Kid, adorned in his white magician outfit, wore a smirk on his face.
