Seth knew Ryan had five different smiles, each with their own meaning. Many people would never see Ryan Atwood as a smiler, but Seth did and cherished every second.
The first smile is Ryan's very own cheeky grin. Seth knows something is up whenever Ryan smiles like this, yet good luck trying to get it out of him. Ryan used this at Harbor's Senior Kick-off Carnival. Grabbing Seth's hand he pulled him onto the Ferris wheel
"Ryan...what?"
"You'll see."
The next minute, as soon as they reached the top, Ryan and Seth had their first PDA. Naturally, Dean Hess kicked them out of the carnival, yet that wouldn't stop them both the next day at school.
The second smile is when Ryan laughs. Seth loves when Ryan laughs; he loves it when Ryan's happy. Such a smile derived when Seth got a bit tipsy the night earlier. Staggering into the poolhouse after Summer's house party he began a striptease for Ryan's viewing pleasure. Ryan managed to record this on his phone, making sure to show Seth the next morning, unable to control his laughter. Yes, Seth loved it when Ryan laughed, even at his own embarrassing, drunk moments.
The third smile is his content smile. Whenever Ryan is comfortable with his life he uses this smile. At night, Ryan comes into Seth's bedroom to snuggle in his bed. Seth holds him close, and sighing contently he looks up at Seth with his blue eyes, kissing his nose. All Seth needs to reply is "Me too."
The forth smile is the one Seth hates the most. It's when Ryan won't let him in on what he is truly feeling, but merely covering it up. It's when he smiles through his pain, and Seth hates it when Ryan is in pain. He'd never forget the one time Seth found a deep scar on Ryan lower back, from an earlier wound. He asked him about it, kissing it softly.
"Oh, when I was younger my mum's boyfriend got into it with a knife."
Seth's heart immediately broke, hearing Ryan say those words, and immense anger that anyone could hurt him.
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine." He smiled the smile, and Seth knew it was NOT fine.
The fifth smile is his favourite and turns him into goo every time. Ryan's classic half-grin, hi blue eyes sparkling, pouring into Seth's own hazel ones. It seems this smile is only rehearsed for him and it's the smile Ryan is giving him right now.
"I love you." Ryan smiled.
"I love you too."
Seth kissed his lips softly, hoping that smile would never fade.
