Chris wasn't allowed to make anything by himself, but he was allowed to sit in the kitchen while Tetsu cooked. Sometimes he stirred pots - slowly, slowly, you don't wanna slop any over the side, do ya, kid? - while his friend worked on various, smaller dishes.

The first time he asked if he could try to make something all on his own, Tetsu's hands had gone straight to his bony hips, and he'd quirked an eyebrow.

"Well... what were you thinkin'?"

Chris had had grand visions of towering chocolate cakes, elegant ice cream sculptures, and Tetsu had stared at his dreamy face for about thirty seconds before he said, quite firmly, "Cupcakes."

Chris was crushed. Cupcakes?

"Cupcakes," Tetsu reiterated, and wrote down the ingredients in precise Chinese, which Pon-chan had to translate - her handwriting wasn't as neat as Tetsu's. Chris had later decided, forlornly, while Tetsu parted the 'cupcakes' from the baking tray, that the scratchy writing was probably half the problem. Probably.

"Not your fault," Tetsu said later, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "She didn't get the conversion right. I'll talk you through it next time."

Chris smiled. He hadn't thought there'd be a next time.
