It's all the small things she does, he thinks to himself. That's why they've been such a good match.
She is able to read him like no one else he knows. She senses at some level when he needs to be comforted, but she also knows when to get him back on line and focused. She sees in him the best and the worst, but doesn't comment. She only tries to help, which normally brings out the best. True, he isn't always as moral as he would like to be, but since he met her, he's been trying harder to be the best he can be.
She knows him like no one else. Not even his own family is able to interpret his moods the way she is. No one else has been able to get him out of a slump the way she has. Whenever she walks through his door, he can't help but smile. True, sometimes he laughs at and not with her, but he's certain that she has had a few laughs at his expense. What are a few laughs between friends anyway?
It's her sense of morals. In a business that sells lies, Betty is perhaps the only thing that is close to the truth. True, she doesn't tell him everything, but she has a moral core, a strong center. She has a rock from which she can launch herself. Betty's clear sense of right and wrong is a breath of refreshing air in an office that practically reeks of deception and office politicking. Betty manages to stay out of it somehow, though he knows it cannot be easy for her to do so. She has a job to do and does let anything get in the way of that job or her perception of the job.
Daniel looks from the desk in his office out to where Betty is on the phone, trying to schedule something. He smiles gently. She doesn't catch the smile; she's too busy trying to write down what she hears on the other end of the phone. Daniel knows that at firs he was resistant to having her be his assistant, but now that he looks back on it, he would not have had it any other way. She is dedicated, resourceful, funny and sweet. She is everything that he could have wanted in an assistant. True, she might not be as good looking as all of his previous assistants, but Betty does not need good looks to make sure that she gets ahead. Betty sticks to her guns and doesn't back down easily. She is also able to inspire loyalty in others by the loyalty she shows them. Daniel knows this personally. Months ago, he would have said he would have willingly taken anyone but Betty Suarez as an assistant. However, Betty has proved to be the best thing that could have happened to him.
It's all the small things she does for him that make him smile when she's not looking. It's all the small things, and then some. Betty is far greater than the sum of her parts. Daniel knows that women like Betty are one in a million, if that common. He smiles to himself gently as she untangles herself from her phone lines. It's good to know where your friends are.
