L tells Misa some things about chess

Disclaimer: Deathnote belongs NOT to me.

L is absorbed in yet another game of chess, against himself. Misa enters the room silently and watches him. He is taking a long time to make this one move, sitting unusually still, with his large hands on his knees, eyes wide-open and unblinking as he stared at the board.

Finally he reaches out to move the queen and mutters "checkmate". Misa claps. It was an interesting game. L is doubtlessly genius!

Misa sank into the armchair directly opposite him with an unladylike bounce. His eyes follow her, observing wordlessly as is his style, pupils opaque and unreadable.

Misa ignores his stare and leans forward to pick up the queen. She fingers it carelessly, dangling it in front of L's (poker) face. He doesn't flinch.

"Why is the queen so powerful? It doesn't make sense, does it?" Misa asked, breaking the silence.

He doesn't reply, so Misa elaborates. "The king is the most important piece around, so he should have the most power!"

"Besides, in the olden days, men had power over their wives. There's no way a sane king would give all the power to his wife! I'm not saying that men should have power over their wives, I'm just saying that it doesn't make sense that in chess, queen has the most power. Or perhaps the person who invented chess is a woman?" Misa ended her mini speech by cocking her head at L.

Then she sank back into the chair, and played with the queen. L is still staring at her with his unreadable eyes. He leaned forward, and Misa marveled to herself at his inhuman agility. He could fall off any moment now!

"The inventor of chess is a genius, and chess is a clever game of manipulation. The king is the point of the game. While he has little power, he can achieve his goal of felling the opponent king by manipulating every other piece on the board. The queen is not really that different from a pawn. Put simply, it's a game between the two kings, and the other pieces are just disposable, unimportant tools to win the game." L paused here and then continued.

"Don't you think that the queen is better off eloping with the opponent king?"

To that Misa couldn't help but giggle. "What! That's a funny thing to ask, Ryuuzaki! Anyway, no way! We should be faithful." She said staunchly.

L blinked at her reply. Then he replied, "Or maybe the inventor of chess loved his wife a lot. Sometimes women have more power over men than they know."

Misa couldn't help but lean forward, pulled in by his intense stare.

"You're a little bit strange today, Ryuuzaki," she murmured, her voice surprisingly hoarse. There was a little tingling in the air around them.

Unbidden, in one deft move, L had pressed his lips to hers!

Misa's eyes widened, in shock. With his eyes so close to hers, she can see her own reflection. She focused on the inverted reflections, and suddenly everything else seems unreal. For a moment, she imagined falling into these two pools of dark ink and never being able to recover to her. Falling, falling…

Their lips touched for a few heartbeats. Then L leaned back into his chair. Surprise nearly made Misa fall off her chair!

As she was struggling to regain her self control, he took the queen from her; large, long fingers brushing ever so lightly with her manicured fingers. A breathe caught in her throat.

Dangling the queen upside down between his fingers, he licked it, once. Then he turned back to Misa, and in an exasperatingly unruffled voice, expressed agreement in two syllables. "Indeed."

Fin!
