A/N: Sorry it took me forever to update and finish this story(six years by my count). I've had this chapter pretty much almost entirely written since January, 2010. Oh and this story is an AU in regards to "The Legacy of Site B".
Indigo: It was early in the next morning as a heavy fog permeated the air obscuring vision to just a few feet in any direction. Inside the Visitors Center, it was remarkably silent with no one traversing the rotunda or adjacent halls. Indeed the whole Indigo Village was utterly deserted. But outside the main Jurassic Park gates, the dinosaurs emerged from the mist and walked right to the doors. They looked at the perimeter fence surrounding the village and one raptor flipped up a stick with its foot and then kicked it at the wires where it erupted into flames. The lead dinosaur a Utah Raptor, stepped over to the override controls and flipped open the door and slammed down the handle as two other dinosaurs pushed open the main gates and were promptly obliterated as a pair of mines went off scattering their parts to the winds. The Utah Raptor growled angrily and then growled an order to a pair of Deinonychosaurs who each picked up a mass of rocks and began cautiously throwing rocks into the inner village hitting the occasional mine as the group advanced inward.
Inside the Visitors Center, Jake sat in the room that had originally housed his office back on Nublar cleaning his gun when Henry appeared.
"They're here," he said as a muffled explosion could be heard. Jake nodded and calmly slammed the barrel closed.
"Everyone evacuated?" he asked popping a stick of gum into his mouth. Henry nodded back at him.
"Last helicopter left with all the nonessential personnel a couple hours ago. Everyone that's left is holed up safely in the Control Room under heavily armed guard," the scientist responded. "We've also got the perimeter fences being powered from the secondary generators spread across the island rather than going through the main generator here that the dinosaurs are likely going to…"
The lights died and then came back dimmer than before thanks to the backup generators.
"Good thing we didn't decide to guard the generator," Jake commented. "So how many are there?"
"Closest we figure, sixteen," said Henry with dread. "The motion sensors briefly detected an erratic seventeenth signature but we think they just knocked down a light pole since it hasn't been seen since."
Jake stood up and looked at him. "You don't have to be here for this, it's me they're after."
Henry chuckled. "It's both of us and you know that just as well as I do. It seems we can never escape the legacy of Jurassic Park."
"Well there is one way to escape," Jake pointed out grimly. "But let's just get this over with."
Henry clapped him on the shoulder and then both heading for the Control Room.
Visitors Center Front Entrance: The Utah Raptor sniffed the door handles and backed up cautiously to stand with its fellow dinosaurs. It looked up at the roof at the scouting party that was now returning from the search of the top of the building. The dinosaurs up above shook their heads negatively before leaping off the roof and slamming down on the road. The Utah Raptor looked at the Oviraptor to its left and barked an order. The dinosaur dipped its head in affirmation and grabbed the handle only to be blasted off of its feet by a massive electrical discharge killing it instantly. Two others carted off the creature's body as the Utah Raptor walked down the steps where a group of Compys were swarming around one of the Jurassic Park tour vehicles that had been carried to its new location from the garage. The Compys had ripped out the wiring from the steering column and one was biting it and twisting it together in various places as still two others were jumping up and down on the brake and gas pedals and then fiddled with the various devices as the remaining Compys ran around the vehicle or observed the engine block and reported back their findings.
Finally, the lead Compy hopped onto the open window frame and squeaked affirmatively. The Utah Raptor gave an affirmative roar and soon sounds of the vehicle starting up were heard before finally the engine turned over and it roared angrily at the world.
Control Room: "What the hell are they doing out there?" asked Gerry looking at the video feed from the front of the building that only occasionally revealed a dinosaur through the heavy fog.
"Maybe they've given up?" suggested Danni hopefully. Billy, Grant, Stephanie, and her had chosen to stay behind and stick it out until the end. Billy and Dr. Grant were particularly interested in witnessing the behavior of these super-intelligent dinosaurs for further insight into their field.
"I doubt we'd be that lucky," said Billy chuckling. Twin lights subsequently appeared from the fog aimed at the front entrance.
"What is that?" asked Stephanie curious as Jake realized what they were.
"No…they couldn't have," he said in disbelief as the tour vehicle tore through the fog and up the steps before crashing through into the main lobby and flipping over and then sliding to a halt just beyond the two dinosaur skeletons as the Compys raced out through the open windows and out the doors to rejoin their comrades.
"Attention all, the outer doors have been breached," said Gerry into his radio. Jake growled.
"Damn, they're good," he said softly. He expected the dinosaurs to then swarm the building en masse but instead cautiously walked up the steps led by the Utah Raptor.
"Defensive Measure 1 is about to be implemented," said Tim from his chair. The dinosaurs entered into the lobby and slowly fanned out in various directions.
"Here she goes," said Tim as Jake nodded at him and he pressed some keys on his computer. On the monitor, the two skeletons came crashing down onto the dinosaurs below. Though most managed to escape, three were taken out by the falling bones. The remaining dinosaurs scattered for fear of further reprisal, but when none came they gathered back together as the dead were carted from the room. The Utah Raptor looked around as fog slowly began drifting into the rotunda quickly obscuring the Compys. The Utah Raptor nevertheless noticed the surveillance camera and pushed its arm into the mist as a Compy scurried up onto it. The dinosaur then launched the Compy at the camera and the screen went to static.
"Damn," Tim muttered twirling his pen absently in his free hand. "They're good."
"Yeah but we still have the advantage," Jake responded. "Door locks still in place?"
"Yeah," Tim responded bringing up a schematic of the Center that showed the locked doors and the locations of everyone in the building. "They're going nowhere."
"Maybe not the Saurs in the floor," Jake agreed. "But we've got Compys in the ceiling."
A soft sound of feet scampering could be heard as Tim seized up startled. Gerry cocked a pistol and gave it to him.
"Let's go," the former veterinarian stated heading for the doors. Jake and Henry went after him along while Stephanie and Danni silently chose to stay behind and defend the Control Room. Alan and Billy looked at each other.
"I already went through this once, I have no desire to be chased by dinosaurs again in this building," Grant quickly stated. Billy laughed.
"I need good photos of this for class," he said hefting his camera.
"Then be safe because getting clawed doesn't guarantee you any extra credit," said Grant with a mild grin. Billy nodded and went to join the others.
"This is it boys, when Sorna's ours and this mess taken care of, the legacy of Jurassic Park will finally be over," said Jake as if a massive weight was beginning to lift off of his chest. "And then we can go on with our lives."
Gerry chuckled at that as Henry scratched his head nervously.
"It'll never be over," they both concluded. Jake nodded in agreement.
"For Nublar," he stated. The others nodded and said the same before Billy joined up with them and they left the Control Room only to run smack into Graves. Not even bothering with a retort for the dinosaur to get lost, they instead walked out into the building.
Lobby: The dinosaurs were gathered around the Utah Raptor who was standing on the top of the overturned Ford Explorer trying to decide what their next plan of attack was. Three of the five Compys were scurrying around through the ventilation ducts while the other two remained with the group. The Raptor made its decision and relayed it to the group and they split up into three groups, three dinosaurs each. One group headed outside for the Control Room, the other the Science Labs, and the third, the Lounge.
Group: "Control, Galley, Labs," came Tim's voice over the radio.
"Got it," said Jake before turning to Gerry and Henry.
"Labs," said Gerry immediately.
"Galley," said Henry after him. Jake nodded and the two headed out with their teams, Billy going with Henry's group. Just as they were out of sight, Jake called out to him.
"Hey Henry," said Jake as the scientist turned to face him. "For Sorna."
"For Sorna," Henry agreed as he gave him a lop-hearted smile and then was gone. Jake then looked forward all business.
"Let's go," he ordered.
Costa Rica: "Sir, you have to stay and rest," protested John Brown's bodyguard as the CEO was hobbling down the main entrance of the hospital where he had been in his coma. As soon as he'd woken up and learned the truth of his condition, that he'd barely been able to survive and then with multiple cuts and lacerations from the dinos, he'd immediately demanded to know what was happening with The Equestrian investigation. The bodyguard had filled him in with what little details Jake had told him and immediately John had headed for the exit, still in his hospital gown. There was also a genuine possibility that he'd have a limp for the rest of his life but that was a small price to pay for still being alive. Thomas had sacrificed himself by throwing himself between the dinosaurs and John to ensure that the CEO had at least a fighting chance to get back at these creatures for what they had done.
And John wasn't about to sit idly by and let them go on attacking the world at large. He had the Pulse Rifle loosely gripped in his right hand and that was why everyone else was moving quickly to get out of his way. The security guards were shadowing them but refused to fire, or call the police, because Pacific Pharmaceuticals was their number one supplier of medicine. But if he tried something…
John was at the front sliding doors that slowly parting open. A little too slowly for the CEOs tastes as he forces his tired and injured right arm to lift the rifle towards them. The guards reached for their guns and aimed them at him as patients, staff, and visitors were cowering everywhere. John looked at them all out of the corners of his eyes and scowled deeply deciding what his next move would be.
"Now, now," said a voice from in front of him. "There's no need for violence, my friend and I were just leaving."
John snapped his eyes forward and saw the aging former CEO of International Genetics standing outside the sliding doors. He was with his butler who was carefully monitoring his medical equipment and was holding his amber-tipped cane in an odd mirror image of John.
"Yes," the Pharmaceuticals CEO agreed as he slowly lowered the rifle and leaned even more heavily on his cane. "We were."
The others in the hospital breathed a sigh of relief as the two CEOs left with their assistants and piled into a limo waiting outside.
"Hammond," John acknowledged curtly. He was nothing less than amazed to ever meet the other CEO but he wasn't about to show it. "It seems we meet at last."
"Yes well I felt that with the journey about to wrap up, that I would have to make an appearance to see it end once and for all," said the former CEO. John looked up at him and simply nodded.
"So how're things with INGEN?" Hammond inquired already knowing damn well the truth.
"About the same as things were when Jurassic Park was around," John responded. The limo passed underneath a sign advertising the local airfield.
"It's never easy to see your dream start to slip away from you, is it?" said Hammond sympathetically. John's head shot up to face him.
"This is…," he stated.
"A momentary setback?" inquired Hammond pointedly. John couldn't think of a response to that as the limo roared to a halt on the tarmac and he got out into the daytime sun headed for an old PBY-5A boat plane that was being prepped by Pacific Pharmaceuticals workers. His bodyguard handed John a change of clothes and then an umbrella.
"The hell's this-," began the CEO as the twin props on the plane began turning.
"Storm's coming," answered the bodyguard simply in the distance rolling clouds could be seen.
"It's always the same," responded the CEO angrily. Hammond nodded.
"Should've built in Orlando," he suggested as the plane took off headed for Indigo.
Indigo: The tropical storm slammed into the island blowing out windows across the island and flipping over anything else not tied down as jeeps blew past the open entrance of the Visitor's Center while rain and wind poured in. Bullets flew too as various bipedal carnivores raced around the lobby and down the hallways as humans also appeared intermittently and disappeared through doors and around corners.
"Hey Tim, how's it going?" Henry asked after a brief lull in the fighting as other carried away the wounded soldiers and the dinos carried away their dead.
"Badly," said Tim typing furiously in the still secure control room. "Somehow the Compys got into the system somewhere and are trying to override the door locks."
The door lock to the control room briefly shot open before Tim hit another key and it locked right back and breathed a sigh of relief along with Doctor Grant who was watching the main screen and the various cameras that winked on and off at various intervals. Evidently the Compys were also messing with the cameras and this caused the paleontologist to grab a stepladder and moved it to the ceiling.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Tim asked bewildered. Grant headed up the ladder and removed a ceiling tile.
"Leaving and you should too," he advised. Tim looked at the windows around the room and saw nothing.
"If you're concerned, we did have the windows doubly reinforced a few months back when the dinos first arrived," Tim advised him. Grant nodded.
"Oh, I'm not worried about that," was all he admitted to before vanishing into the ceiling. Tim turned around only to watch the door fly off its hinges as a Pachycephelasaurus brewed triumphantly before charging him. The computer scientist barely managed to race up the stepladder and into the ceiling as the dinosaur demolished the aluminum construct with one headbutt. As the two humans scurried along the ceiling tiles headed for an air vent on the far side.
"You know your way around," commented Tim impressed. Grant laughed despite himself.
"Unfortunate experience, my friend, unfortunate experience," he commented as warm air started blasting through the vents no doubt from the Compys meddling. "But unfortunately I suppose this now gives the dinosaurs the temporary advantage."
Tim nodded. "Yeah but I know where they are now so let's go get them,"
Hallways: Doors started unlocking and randomly locking and the air conditioning system went haywire amongst other systems going awry across the Visitors Center.
"Bug in the electrical system?" Henry inquired. Though he couldn't see him, a sly smile spread across Jake's face.
"Nope," he responded frankly. "We've got gremlins, so let's some sunlight in and fry them all."
The battle raged for several hours with fierce fighting, inside every building and across the entire compound. Casualties began to mount heavily on both sides as the dinosaur troops threw themselves at the humans with a measure of ferocity tempered with cunning intelligence. They opened doors, they planned ambushes, they played dead and they did whatever they could to press the advantage. In some ways this helped them and in others it proved to their disadvantage.
As instinct driven creatures, they took no quarters and pressed ahead, to their advantage or otherwise. They never second guess anything and they attacked whenever they perceived an opportunity. But with intelligence, doubts crept into their minds. Was an opening an opening or rather a trick? They did not know and while they did avoid several deadly encounters, more often they not, they failed to press the advantage or if they did, it was too late and they were defeated in the process.
But they were still deadly. Guns and bullets worked for long range attacks, but teeth and claws had no equal in close combat. That was why things were going the same for both sides…badly.
Outside: An explosion blew the front doors off the Visitor's Center as from the outside looking in brief flashes of gunfire could be seen through the smoke and the occasional glint of light off of razor sharp claws or teeth. But soon the smoke became too much and what was left of both parties emerged into the outer courtyard coughing heavily. The remaining ranks for both were few and far between on both sides.
On the human side, Gerry Harding had small nicks and cuts across his body but was otherwise okay. Henry was bleeding from his forehead and a couple other places but was doing okay for having no combat experience. But Jake…Jake was much worse off than the rest of them. He had cuts, scratch marks and various bites and more all over his body and was swaying back and forth from blood loss. He needed a doctor, they all did, but each knew they had to stay with this one to the bitter end. Next to them were various other assorted workers of what was left of the essential personnel. The rest were either dead or had been carted off to the only secure place left on the island, the workers dormitory which had a hospital stocked to the brim with supplies in the event the dinosaurs got loose.
CLICK CLICK CLICK
Jake's nearly emptied revolver clicked a five times as he aimed at the remaining five dinosaurs before dropping his arm, too pained to keep it held aloft. He looked over at the others through deep breaths as the others look right back with the same thoughts. Jake and Gerry had been in this situation many years before, back on Sorna, and now Henry finally knew what it was like to feel what they had felt back in those days.
Anger at the situation they were in, exhaustion from having to face it for so long, wishing desperately that it would all be over soon and the ever gnawing feeling of guilt that in some way, the situation they were in was their own fault and there was nothing they could do to change it.
The dinosaurs for their part were summoning up their reserve energy and sizing up their opponents and exchanging glances to formulate a plan to take them out. But after a few moments of silence had passed, allowing them to catch some of their breath, there was little reason to continue the charade and just get it over with.
But before the two sides could get at each other…
FWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!
The groups were battered by the wake of a low travelling Lear Jet that buzzed past and onto the horizon before coming back and laying in a holding pattern above the compound. It circled a couple of times before extending its landing gear and coming down to a rough landing on the dirt road. It came to a halt in front of the two parties, both of which had almost completely forgotten their plans of attack in lieu of this new arrival.
From the side of the plane, the ingress/egress hatch popped open and extended its steps to the ground but no one exited the mysterious new arrival. Rather a set of sounds echoed from the inner workings of the mechanical beast.
TAP…TAP…TAP…TAP…
From the shadows emerged John Brown, CEO of Pacific Pharmaceuticals and current owner of INGEN bioengineering. He had the rifle from earlier slung around his shoulder, but he did not carry it as he cautiously made his way down the stairs with his cane and noticeable limp. As he reached the ground, he was quickly approached by the human side of the two parties who quickly surrounded their boss in a very protective manner.
"Hey everybody, glad to see you're still with us," said the CEO appreciatively, though he winced a little while trying to talk and breathe due to his injuries.
"Hey boss," said Gerry nodding his head at him. Henry for his part just tipped his head.
"What are you doing here?!" demanded Jake irate. John looked at him solemnly before turning to face the enclave of hyper-intelligent dinosaurs.
"I'm here to end this," he declared as he un-slung his rifle and held it out towards the dinosaurs on the other end.
"Good, because we're out of ammunition so end it quickly," he agreed. The CEO nodded and then did something nobody expected of him.
He tossed the fully loaded rifle to the ground between the two parties. The humans and the dinosaurs looked at the gesture in shock.
"Umm, boss?" asked Gerry confused. Jake couldn't even muster a proper response but just started blurting out every expletive he could think of.
"Mr. Brown?" asked Henry this time as the dinosaurs slowly advanced on them. John turned to face them with a genuine smile on his face.
"It's over," he promised. "This is the final chapter of Jurassic Park and it is finally closed."
The dinosaurs were about to leap on them when a steady sound was heard echoing from the plane, a noise that caused the dinosaurs to stop in their tracks.
TAP…TAP…TAP…TAP…
From the entrance to the plane, a darkened figure appeared complete with a wide-brimmed hat.
"Hello, my children, it's good to see you again," came the soft spoken but distinguished voice of INGEN's founder and former CEO, John Hammond as he stepped out of the plane and painfully down the steps and onto the ground. The dinosaurs stood, as if in a trance, by this new arrival and slowly walked past the tense group of humans and stood around their creator.
"Look at how big you all have grown," he began fawning over them as he rubbed their heads and the previously vicious dinosaurs now growled in contentment. He then tried to move forward but stumbled and nearly fell before the benefiters of the Dinosaur Super Intelligence Program held him up and gingerly helped him along towards the Visitors Center. But as they passed by the humans who had recently opposed them, they growled angrily.
"No,"
The dinosaurs turned to their creator as he softly shook his head.
"It's over," he said, repeating John Brown's former words. What the dinosaurs understood of his words would never be known, but they did get the gist of his actions. The dinosaurs continued helping him along before he came to a halt when passing Jake Whitacre and Henry Wu who were standing there passively. Henry looked dumbfounded at this turn of events but Jake looked at him as best he could without suspicion but found he couldn't. The two sides tentatively advanced towards each other until they were standing directly across from each other with Hammond in the middle…each at a loss for words, not that dinosaurs could talk.
"B-but it can't end this way!" shouted Jake irate. "I WON'T let it end this way!"
Hammond turned to face his former employee, sadly. "You have to let it go. Gustavius is dead, he won't be coming back. And neither will Geoffrey."
"We will never be safe as long as they are alive," Jake promised. "This planet is not big enough for the both of us. Right now there's only been a trickle of escapees from Sorna but someday there will be a mass exodus."
"But that's just it," Hammond proclaimed, "they don't know any better! The dinosaurs know there's a world out there but not that it is already inhabited. There would be no way for us to teach them that or even keep them contained on a single island. But these dinosaurs have the gift of super-intelligence and what is out there. With them on Site B, there will be no more escapees because they and their progeny will be the guides for the current and future generations. Finally, there will be peace!"
Hammond's vision completely stunned the rest of the group.
"How can you trust them; they've murdered so many people!" continued Jake, refusing to back down. Hammond nodded his head.
"You're right they did and then we struck back just moments ago," the former CEO of InGen reminded him. "This cycle of violence has been going back since practically the beginning of the Dinosaur Revivification Project. We locked them up and then they got loose and A-1 happened. We tightened security measures which then failed and then the power failed and they came after us. To prevent such an event from happening on Sorna, E.L.E. was activated. And then dinosaurs got loose again and sought revenge. Again, there was an attempt to contain them and again they attacked us.
The cycle continues again and again and again and we once more find ourselves in the same situation we have so many times before. If we don't break the cycle of violence now then all-out war really is the only option left. The Demons of the Past, Present, and Future must end here and now…forever. A 'lost world' no more!"
Utter silence permeated the air as John Hammond and Jake Whitacre continued to stare at each other. Jake's breath was coming long and hard as sweat continued to bead down his face.
Hammond for his part reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object and then held it out to Jake. Breaking eye contact, Jake looked down at the object…it was a photo of Hammond, Wu, and himself at the groundbreaking ceremony for Site B. The scientist then looked at his former boss who was smiling at him. All eyes were on Jake, wondering what he would do next.
…And then the air suddenly shimmered directly behind Hammond.
"John, get down!" shouted Jake as he shoved the older man aside. A Dimetrodon suddenly appeared out of thin air, letting down its chameleon disguise, and charging in for the attack. Jake immediately swung up his revolver and fired his final shot. As soon as he did, he felt a sharp pain in his chest and then everything went dark.
…
…
…
…
"J…"
"Ja…"
"Jak…
"Jake…"
"JAKE!"
Jake Whitacre groggily came to realizing he was on the ground and saw that everyone was clustered around him. Next to him was the dead Dimetrodon which
"Shit, he needs a medic," said Danni concerned.
"Well there aren't any left on the island," Henry snapped at her. "Jake are you still there?"
"Yes," said Jake, his words slurring. "W-what happened?"
"That phantom dinosaur the motion trackers picked up was a Dimetrodon," John Brown explained. "It must've been the leader of the group. And from the looks of things it couldn't put the past behind it either."
Jake coughed, now knowing why he was in such pain.
"I always knew they'd be the death of me someday," he remarked, coughing up blood.
"You're not dead, yet!" said Stephanie upset as tears brimmed in her eyes. "You can't leave me you son of a bitch. Not now!"
"We both know there's only person who could help me with and she died on Sorna a long time ago," Jake remarked, knowing his real chances. "It's okay…I think it's probably better this way. There's no more room for an old foss…"
Jake's words gurgled in his mouth and his eyes glazed over.
"JAKE!" shouted Henry at his friend while shaking him. "We started all of this together and now that it's over you're just going to bail on me? What do you have to say about that?"
Jake's eyes focused on his oldest friend one more time and a smile crossed his lips.
"Hey, Henry," he began as if remembering the past. "We'll be fine…trust me…."
Those were the words he had said to Henry all those years ago when Henry had been worried that something bad had happened on Nublar.
"I always do," his friend acknowledged with a grin of his own.
And with that the eyes closed on Site B's scientist for the final time. All around him, dead silence fell over the group as everyone was left in a state of shock. The super-intelligent Velociraptor that Dr. Graves had made especially to warn Jake and Henry about what had really happened to him reared back its head and roared in tribute as the other super-intelligent dinosaurs followed suit. Stephanie collapsed to the ground with her arms wrapped around her abdomen as she finally burst into tears.
John Brown scratched the back of his head uncertainly before pulling out his smartphone and sending a message to his secretary about how full benefits were to be distributed to Stephanie Sandelder since Jake really had no family to give them to. He then gave a light nod of respect to a man who had been a thorn in his side for many years and then headed off towards the Visitor's Center to recall the workers who had left and also get an update on what was happening on Sorna.
Gerry Harding squatted down briefly and patted his old friend and the shoulder and then helped Stephanie back to her feet and led her away back to the Visitors Center as well. Danni was never exactly friends with Jake, but she walked over to the helicopter and pulled out an emergency blanket and handed it to John Hammond and then left for the Visitors Center as well.
That left John Hammond and Henry Wu by themselves as Hammond gently placed the blanket over Jake Whitacre and then look over at the former head scientist of InGen.
"No tears?" he asked as Wu had somehow remained completely composed. Henry shook his head.
"He wouldn't want me to fall apart in a situation like this. Just stay focused on what's coming next so that's what I'm going to do," Henry promised. "The cycle has to end and I know that's what he would have wanted also."
Hammond nodded his head and then looked down at the blanket.
"Goodbye my friend," he said simply as helicopters raced overhead and vehicles rolled up to the Visitors Center with the returning workers.
Site B: The teams sent to cleanup Sorna rolled victoriously into the Workers Village which had been successfully swept for dinosaurs. The island had been successfully retaken and everyone was excited that the hard work was finally over. Sam Stone was once more sitting happily at his old desk as he surveyed the damage and made plans for refurbishing the place back to its former glory. He was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he didn't notice Aeryl Mingham standing in the doorway until she knocked on it.
"Yes?" he asked happily before noticing her very grim expression which threw him for a loop.
"New orders from John Brown," she told him. "We're to gather all the workers here and then we're pulling out."
"What, why?" asked Sam almost completely speechless by this turn of events. "We just finish corralling the dinosaurs and putting up new fencing. Sure all the carnivores are together and all the herbivores are together but it shouldn't be too difficult to separate them and place into proper paddocks once all the fences are finally installed. It's in the plan. I mean c'mon…" he said as if the whole idea of pulling out was ridiculous to even consider.
"Jake Whitacre is listed as KIA," said Aeryl dropping another bomb on him using military terminology. Sam fell out of his chair when he heard that. And he sat there in a stunned stupor for several minutes trying to form a sentence but utterly failing. His mind couldn't comprehend the fact that his good friend was gone.
"Orders?" asked Aeryl, hoping to give him some direction and get him out of his funk. Sam looked at her helplessly for a moment before composing himself and standing back up.
"Have the workers out in the field make sure the fences are fully functional and then have them return to base. I also a detailed sweep of the island the satellites, helicopters, workers, the whole works and make absolutely sure that there is nothing roaming loose on this island that shouldn't be," he ordered. Aeryl nodded and left the room. As she did, Sheila Matula the former programmer from Site B entered the room.
"Hey did you hear about-," she began as Sam nodded his head about what had happened to Jake.
"Oh, man," said Sheila also shaken up by the news as he scratched the back of his head nervously.
"Look, we can't worry about that now," said Sam trying to be all business. "What about the computer system?"
The female nodded, grateful to be talking about something else. "The bad news is the terminals are wrecked thanks to rain, the jungle creeping in, and whatever else happened in the control room over the past fourteen years. The good news is that the mainframes were built in a room that was supposed to keep out the elements and so they're in great shape even though it's been so long since they were last turned on. I just finished making patching in and we're good to go."
Sam nodded his head, glad that things were still on track despite the sudden change in plans. "Go ahead and dump all the data into the hard drives we brought with us. Grab everything you can from the servers because we're not coming back."
"Will do," Sheila confirmed getting ready to leave.
"Oh and one other thing," said Sam calling out to her before she disappeared. "You are to delete anything and everything concerning E.L.E. from the mainframes."
Sheila swallowed hard at that but nodded his acknowledgment of the orders and then left to get to work. Sam then followed suit and walked down a pair of hallways before arriving at the dissection room that had been carefully hidden away from prying eyes. The door was open and the former head of Sorna walked in to see a cleanup team disposing of everything inside.
"Status?" asked Sam. The team leader walked up to him in full biohazard regalia.
"We've collected all the physical samples and are cleansing the room now," the leader answered as workers threw gasoline everywhere. "We'll do a controlled burn and then put it out. If anyone finds this room at some point in the future, they can only guess what its intended purpose was."
"Excellent," said Sam approvingly. "Make it quick, we're pulling out soon but I don't know exactly when."
The team leader nodded and returned to directing the others in the room. Sam headed for the outdoors to direct the incoming workers who would be sure to arrive soon. But before he got outside, he passed by Jake Whitacre's old office and paused briefly. Looking inside at the ruined office, he tipped his head briefly in respect, and then continued on his way. He met Aeryl who was looking at him expectantly.
"C'mon, let's get the hell out of here," he said with disgust about the entire affair all the way back when Isla Sorna was still Site B.
Forty-five minutes later the workers and their vehicles were either airlifted or boated off of the island.
Two hours later: John Hammond, John Brown, and Henry Wu were gathered back at the Worker's Village where a small memorial had been placed for Jake Whitacre in front of the bridge to the Operations Building. The trio had paid their respects and was now watching as the super-intelligent dinosaurs were now leaving the village and heading off into the island.
"You're sure about this?" asked Henry still a little reluctant about the whole idea. "Can we really trust them?"
"We have to because we have no other choice," responded John Brown. "We know we can't keep them contained and I don't think bombing this island is going to end our problems either."
"And there's been enough killing," John Hammond concluded as he looked at the island one last time before boarding the waiting helicopter and it took to the sky. "InGen was never about destroying the past. It was about making the future. And today, we make history."
Hammond held up a remote control device and thumbed it on. Across the island, power to the fences shut off. And with it, the dinosaurs were once more free to roam the island. Only this time, they would be watched over and guarded.
…And hidden deep in the vaults of Pacific Pharmaceuticals, mainframes stood containing all the information on the Dinosaur Revivification Process. And deeper still in cold freezers sat refrigeration units containing dinosaur embryos collected from Site B. It had taken 65 million years to discover their secrets and they were waiting patiently for the day when they would be needed once again.
End.
