The silver moonlight brought a pang against mercury, and the aura hit the water and bounced onto their faces.
They sat side by side, not quite touching.
It was on every Tuesday and Thursday that they'd meet like this, sitting together staring at the enchanting lake.
Were they friends? No.
There would be no hidden love, no unbidden tryst, no forbidden desires.
But there was something between them.
Something that bound them together, and swayed their lives to force them to come to this spot.
Her face was illuminated in the darkness, as the wind scattered a few waterdrops to stain her face.
His face had turned pale long ago, but now it was a sickly white by the glow of the moon.
His eyes had lost the determined spark fuled by his hatred of her. That one girl who now sat beside him.
His eyes were now distant and foggy, dull and frosted.
She sat staring at the water still, hypnotized by it's smooth and gentle currents.
Her eyes gleamed with excitment and love, unlike his. Her hair bounced and shone in the soft light of the moon, while his remained lank and tangled, covering his eyes.
Her hand twitched.
"Silver..."
Her voice sighed his name, and he glanced at her.
"Crystal...?"
He replied, his voice light and brisk.
A small smile tinged her lips, and she held out her hand to him, her pale skin shimmering in the milky glow.
He gripped it with his own, and they looked out towards the lake.
She relaxed and breathed deeply, her hand tingling at his touch.
"You'll always be here when I come, right?" she asked him.
Her grip on his hand tightened.
"Yes." Was his short reply.
"Promise me, you'll never leave."
He squeezed her hand, albeit a little too tight, as if annoyed with her. He nodded, but said nothing.
'Thank you' she mouthed at nothing in particular, and turned her head to the sapphire lake.
Together they gazed at the murky water, and then at each other.
She looked into his eyes, past the weariness and dull clanks of despair, and for a lingering moment, saw the spark.
The spark that meant everything.
'...There would be no hidden love, no secret kiss shared in the darkness...'
"No..."
His voice was thick with disappointment, but it was, too, firm.
"I understand." she said, her voice without emotion.
A few moments passed, and she lifted her other hand and brushed a stray lock of hair out of his eyes.
His free hand, callused and rough, quickly moved to grip her's.
He frowned at her, and her face lit up.
He released her dainty fingers and tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
She was wearing an orange beret, which he patted affectionately.
He looked back out at the lake while she adjusted her hat back to the way she liked.
She lightly brushed her lips against his cheek while he stood still as stone, staring straight ahead.
Content, she sighed and joined him in gazing at the twinkling water.
Their hands were still intertwined.
