Useful Advice

Taking a deep breath he let his eyes wander over the grey stone walls again. Not a single ornament fought against their bleak design, not a single window's light strived to break through the seemingly endless darkness. The only way out was the long way down. A bottomless pit, eager to swallow those who dared to disturb the deadly silence that clouded this once holy place.

Of course he could always turn around and go back. Of course this was an option. But of course this was also the option he would never choose. Go back. He had travelled miles and miles. He had endured trial after trial. He had fought numberless enemies and had stopped to count how often his life had been at stake a long time ago. Go back. He had done none of this with the intention of ever going back.

However, after coming this far, Link's attention was suddenly cruelly turned to a previously tiny inconvenience that had just risen to the status of a major problem.

A feeble blot of light shone from a singular torch beside the entrance and allowed him a faint glimpse of the other door that lay beyond the abyss. He knew that the silver key in his pocket would open it. He knew that there was a mechanism to lower the bridge on the ceiling and let him pass safely to the other side. He knew that the solution was the switch above the door. And he knew that all he had to do now was draw his bow, aim at the switch and shoot.

"I really wish I'd stocked up on those." he said, looking ruefully at the arrow in his hand. The only arrow he had left.

After cutting briefly through the silence with a heavy sigh he took aim and tried to focus on the switch in the dim light beyond. The icy darkness made him freeze and yet anxiety drove pearls of sweat to his forehead as he tried to keep his shaking hands steady.

Left. Left. Le- no, right. Down. A bit more. There. Or was it? Yes. Yes, he was sure of it. The arrow would hit. He wouldn't miss the target. He could do it. He would do it. He prepared to let go and-

"HEY! LOOK! LISTEN!"

The shrill chirp made Link's arm jerk upwards as he fell back with a scream and let go, his horrified gaze watching the arrow recoil from the stone wall with an echoing clank.

"Hey! Look! There's a switch on the other side! I think you should hit it with your arrow!" the blue light chirped and circled the warrior excitedly, happily observing that her useful advice had apparently moved her friend to tears.

End.

No reference to a particular temple, I just needed the scenery. A short tribute to the everlasting desire of shoving Navi into a meat grinder. But of course you do know what I'm talking about. Heh.
