Prologue

Although they were underground, the stench of burning metal from the outside was so thick it was difficult to breathe. The heat from the sun was no help and there was the strong smell of body odor in the air as well. There were two people, a man and a woman, in this so called 'home,' a home they had come to call their own after so much conflict…but the battle was yet not over. They were still searching, still yearning that they would find her… their baby…

"Please don't leave me alone here," cried the woman. In desperation, she clung onto the man's arms, the tears falling freely down her face. "What if something happens to you? What will I do without you?"

"Don't worry about me…" said the man. Parting with her was so upsetting for him; he did not want to part with her, but he knew he had no choice. An aircraft of some sort had crashed recently a bit away from their home. "You know why I must do this…"

"There must be another way!"

"No, we need to find another child, maybe make some sort of trade-off…" The woman sobbed at his words; they both didn't want to burden another with the same loss that they had to deal with, but they had heard the whispers, they knew what had to be done…

"Just promise me, you won't get hurt or do anything irrational." She looked down into his eyes expectantly. He looked her dead in the eye and felt his fill with tears.

"I can't make any promises…I'm sorry." The woman just cried and cried. The man embraced her. "Just remember I love you, and I'll do everything I can to get her back." And with that, he kissed her on the forehead and left their underground home to head for the crash site.

"Wait!" came a shout from behind him, "Let me come with you, she's my child too… I should be doing something to find her…"

"No," came the response, "I can't be watching out for you at the same time as trying to obtain a child… it'll be too risky and may come off as suspicious…"

"But…"

"And what if someone comes here from the crash site… what if the OTHERS come! Did you think about that? YOU'RE being irrational… I want you to stay here and stay low... for both our sakes…"

The woman shrieked in rage at these words, but went back underground-muttering, on the way, something that sounded suspiciously like 'I killed for you.'

The man sighed. He loved her so much and wanted to make her happy, but he also wanted her to be safe. He began to walk to his destination, but he knew it would take about a day to get to the wreckage area with all its people… He figured that in about a couple hours the sun would begin to set and so he had time 'til he had to set up camp. At this point of being on this island, he was used to the whispering and just ignored them. The whispers were telling him to go home. He should have listened.
