A/N: I just feel like typing. Here goes.

Shadow walked along quietly on the cold, September night. He was in, of all places, Station Square. He didn't mind the city as badly in the autumn. The falling leaves and the cold, crisp air made everything feel right to him. It was such a comforting feeling.

He had been thinking a lot lately. It seemed as though upon meeting Black Doom, life just got more confusing for him. He wasn't getting answers for any of the questions he'd ask. And after a while, he had to kill Black Doom to save the world, probably destroying the only thing that could stop his confusion in the process. All he could remember was Maria. Her long, blond hair, her kind, blue eyes...

Shadow felt two small tears escape his eyes as he thought about her. Of all the things in his past to remember, why did it have to be her? Why did it have to be all the good times, the times that had made him believe to be the luckiest hedgehog alive? It was so unfair. All of these feelings were just memories. He could never get them back. He could never see Maria again. All because that soldier had to shoot her. All she tried to do was protect him, and she was killed for it.

Shadow began to feel guilty. He should have been more careful, he should have protected her. If he had had just a bit more time, he could have saved her. But how would that help? She was so frail and sickly, she surely would have died soon after on Earth. And even if she wouldn't have, she would be over sixty by now. And Shadow was still immortal. So, even if he would have been able to save her, it wouldn't have done her much good. She would've just died later. No matter what he could have done, his precious Maria would have been snatched away from him.

He finally looked up. He was by the train station. He looked up to the black sky, the stars drowned out by the city lights. He missed the stars. They made him think of Maria. Of how she was up in heaven, looking down upon him. Of how she wasn't sick anymore. Of how much happier she must be because she doesn't have to spend the rest of her sickly life in pain. She was at peace.

Shadow began to ponder this. Maybe that soldier didn't kill her out of cruelty after all. Maybe he killed her to save her from the pain of living. Maybe the soldier wasn't a demon for killing her after all. Maybe he was an angel who came to stop her suffering.

Shadow looked to the clock over the doors to the train station. It was nearing midnight. No one else was on the streets. He sighed and walked over to the beach. The sound of the gentle waves calmed him down and helped him think. The sand felt good to walk in. He had always wondered what Maria would think of sand. Would she like it because it was soft? Or would she rather avoid it because it could set off some reaction with her illness?

He then looked out over the ocean, to the moon. There was one thing he remembered about Maria. She had always loved to look at the moon with him. It calmed them both down if they felt unhappy. It made them wonder how it had gotten stuck around Earth in the first place. As Shadow continued to stare at the moon, he felt another tear slip slowly down his cheek. The moon was so beautiful tonight. He just wished that Maria was here to see it, one last time.

Well, that's it. I typed it in about ten minutes (not even that) so I won't blame anyone who thinks it sucks. Maybe I'll make a longer version sometime...
