Yeeeah, been replaying my FireRed game and this idea came up.

Didn't know the name of the guy so it kinda get's a little repetitive. All the spoken words are from the game.

A Little Help

By Dark Ice Dragon

Too Much

He liked helping new trainers on the start of their journeys. It was something that he enjoyed doing. He knew what it was like to leave home and to travel across the world trying to find every pokémon there was to find -he'd done it himself. But that had been a long time ago.

There had been someone there to give him a helping hand then, and now he was the one helping the next generation.

He spotted a young girl approaching him, seeming unsure of what she was doing or where she was meant to go. He took in the backpack, the dusty trainers and the recurring touch to her right hip as if she wasn't sure the pokéball was still there.

Ah, a new trainer.

He put his empty coffee mug on the ground next to him, stood up from his chair and walked up to the girl, smiling to let the girl know he was going to talk to her. The girl saw him coming and smiled nervously back.

"Well now, I've had my coffee, and that's what I need to get going!" he said so that there wasn't an awkward silence. He spied something in the girl's hand. "Hm? What is that red box you have?" After asking the question, he realised that he already knew the answer as he had seen it before. He laughed embarrassedly before saying, "Ah, so you're working on your pokédex. Then let me give you a word of advice." He didn't ask if the girl needed it, it was always good to listen to what others had to say and you never knew what you could learn from it. "Whenever you catch a pokémon the pokédex automatically updates its data."

He noticed that the girl had a confused look on her face. He interpreted it as it was because the girl didn't know how to.

"...You don't know how to catch a pokémon?" How was she going to be able to do anything with only one pokémon? "I suppose I had better show you then!" He had already seen the Weedle in the shadow of the bushes.

:-:-:

"There! Now tell me, that was educational, was it not?" The girl smiled at him in appreciation, nodding in understanding. When the girl had left to go to Viridian Forest she had said a word of thanks as she passed him by.

He grinned as he saw the girl walk away but the grin faded as he watched the pokéball in his hand disappear. He sighed as he went to sit down again.

He enjoyed helping people but what was he going to do with over one-hundred Weedle in Bill's computer?

Gotta love technology. And yeah, the old man is meant to seem a little pushy. I always got annoyed by the fact that I couldn't get past him without him talking to me about how to catch a pokémon when I already had three pokémon in my team.
