Basically, simply, Cloud was going to go through a long-winding emotional rehab with Vincent by his side. Vincent would eventually fall in love with Cloud, which would shock Cloud. In the final chapters, Cloud would eventually come around and return Vincent's feelings.

There were maybe only three more chapters to go before the end.
