Buffy started to sob as the bus pulled away from its first rest stop. She'd found out that just to get to LA, it was costing her $75 and like a hundred stops. She never got why buses and planes couldn't just take the easiest ways to get places. They always had to fly or drive cock-eyed. She could remember one time when she was little, her parents had driven to Chicago to visit friends from college, then from there they flew down to Florida. The pilot had taken a liking to Buffy, and she'd called her up to the cockpit one time to show her some controls and tell her that they were now flying over Dallas. She'd gotten into a huge argument that it was pointless to fly over Dallas, that was going out of their way. She'd wound up in trouble with her parents and the stewardesses didn't ever bring her the extra peanuts she'd asked for.

Buffy wiped the tears from her eyes. "I remember the most ridiculous things." she took her Walkman out of her backpack and played with the tuner, trying to get a station with a song that at least appeared to be soothing. She settled on something that sounded like a belonged on the Pure Moods CD and closed her eyes.

//Your hands were covered in paint

The pillow smothered my cry

You were half charmer, half snake

I lived in dreamtime\\

Buffy opened her eyes. She couldn't be sure, but she thought she'd heard this song playing one night in Angelus' lair. Why was he playing it? It seemed to describe how she was feeling about him, not the reverse.

//But I'm alive; I survived you

And the bitter taste, the years I wasted

All the hate is gone

'Cause I'm alive\\

Buffy definitely knew she was familiar with the song now, but she'd ruled Angelus out as an option. She knew it was too dark a song for her mother's taste, too American and recent for Giles. Willow and Xander didn't play much of anything, where the hell had she heard it?

//Some nights I'd sleep in the car

Just to escape you

You drove devotion too far

No one could save you

I still have visions of you

I still have nights to get through

And when the trust isn't true

I have these visions of you, visions of you\\

And then it dawned on Buffy where she'd heard the song before.

In her dreams.

//But I'm alive; I survived you

And the bitter taste, the years I wasted

All the hate is gone, 'cause I'm alive

Ride on and fade away

There's nothing more to say\\

She turned the Walkman off before the next song could start. She'd heard enough. She was past the part of her life that included Angel, and Sunnydale for that matter. Time to move on, even if only God knew what waited for her in LA.
