They talk of the Ron Factor. They say it is what makes Kim great. And I help, I'll give them that. But nobody ever told me what the Ron Factor really is.
Heroes need devotion. They must feel for the cause they are fighting, or the cause will fail. They must fight single-mindedly, dropping everything for their cause. This theory works in war. It works when there is just one cause that needs to be fought for. But when the cause is simply good, and the war never ends, the hero becomes subhuman. Their drive makes them focus solely on something that they cannot win, cannot defeat. The drive that makes them great kills them. It murders emotions; it makes them what they think they want to be. A machine: something that fights without stopping, without fail. As a machine, that is amazing. And yet, a machine does not work as a hero. Heroes need to feel, or they become the villains. They become as bad as evil. A hero empathizes with the people she saves.
Kim is the same as all heroes. She pushes herself to and past her limit. Her drive makes her one of the greatest heroes the world has seen. But she has the fatal flaws of a hero as well. She would makes herself into a fighting machine, if there was no one to remind her that she is a human. So she needs me. I remind her simply by being there that she is human, she can feel. I make her feel emotions that the idealized hero shouldn't feel: humiliation, anger, frustration, annoyance. She feels and remembers her other life, where she's normal. Where she has teen problems that need emotion. That, my friends, is the Ron Factor. I remind Kim of what she is. I remind her that to feel is one of mankind's greatest gifts. And that by shutting it off, she becomes that which she strives to demolish.
