Light On, Light Off

(Watari)

I wonder about lights, sometimes. I mean, there is that universal question, "Does the light go out when you close the refrigerator door?" People say yes. They do this test where they sit very close to the edge of the refrigerator and when the door is almost closed, it goes out.

But me, being a scientist (of sorts), has to wonder something else. The light may go off when you're about to close it, but what if it comes back on when you close it all the way? Refrigerators are tricky that way. I tried to close myself in a refrigerator once, but Tatsumi stopped me. I tried to explain my hypothesis to him, but he still thought it was ridiculous. I went back to my lab, and Tatsumi came in an hour later with a small digital recorder. You just put the camera into the refrigerator and close the door and watch the feed on a small screen.

You never can tell about these things, sometimes. Sometimes cooperative, sometimes they're mean and insensitive. But he still means well. He's grumpy and is obsessed with money, but he's also a good person. He has always taken good care of me when I needed it, and he understands things well. He's the kind of guy you just want to hug. He looks like he needs a hug, you know?

Oh, my! When had I stopped talking about refrigerators? Ha ha… I tend to get led off track, sometimes. Anyway, the answer to the question is, yes. The light does go out and stays out when you close the refrigerator door. Well, at least OURS does. I'm not quite sure about other models though.

I'm on my to Tatsumi's office to suggest a full, sneaky investigation of other people's refrigerators. I wonder what he'll say… I walk in his office and ask him with a big smile on my face. He sighs, takes off his glasses and puts his face in his hand.

"Watari, I think YOUR light turned off."

"Nani?"
