ANIMAL

Rikuo entered the apartment and all was quiet. He was surprised especially since Kazahaya was up here and babysitting. The owner of that strange kitten they'd rescued had asked them to take care of the kitten while he went out of town. Kazahaya readily agreed. Rikuo could only imagine what they'd been doing up here, two animals together.

As soon as he reached the couch, he saw why it was so quiet, they were asleep. Kazahaya was curled on his side and the kitten was sleeping in the curve of his body. He watched and noticed that even their breaths were synchronized. Actually they were kinda cute together.

Rikuo went to the kitchen to get a soda and thought how vulnerable Kazahaya looked in sleep. When he was awake he was always talking too loud or being extra clumsy but when he was asleep, he looked as if the slightest thing could hurt him. It made him wonder yet again why Kazahaya was out on his own and so naïve about… well almost everything. It seemed as if Kazahaya had been sheltered his whole life leaving him unprepared to deal with living a normal life.

What? There was a cry that came from the couch; Rikuo went to investigate. Kazahaya probably rolled off or something. The kitten was awake and it was rubbing his little head against Kazahaya's face. It looked up at Rikuo as if asking for help.

Kazahaya was trembling and moaning softly. "He's just dreaming, it'll stop soon." Rikuo shook his head as he realized he was reassuring the kitten. But it didn't stop; in fact it seemed to get worse. The kitten mewed at him then went back to licking Kazahaya's face.

As he stood there uncertain if he should wake Kazahaya, the boy responded to the kitten. Still asleep his hand came up to stroke the kitten and his own trembling slowed. Rikuo smiled, that animal instinct worked even when he was asleep but it wasn't over. Tears, silent tears now streamed from Kazahaya's eyes.

Again the kitten mewed up him and stared, almost willing him to do something to help Kazahaya. "What? You're both animals, you comfort him." His answer was another mew. Sighing Rikuo sat on the coffee table. Maybe he should wake him up and get the kitten to stop staring at him.

Reaching out a hand Rikuo touched Kazahaya's shoulder. A shuddering sigh came from him and he seemed to settle down somewhat. Rikuo took his hand away and Kazahaya moaned and turned his head as looking for that touch again. Tears still streamed from his eyes and the kitten was speaking up again. Hesitantly he put his hand over Kazahaya's head then brushed back his hair. Rikuo found himself staring at the face that looked so young in sleep and wanting to comfort him.

Stroking his hair, Rikuo watched as the tears stopped. His thumb went to the wet cheek and brushed away lingering tears. Kazahaya leaned into the touch and breathed easier. Rikuo heard purring and noticed that as he stroked Kazahaya, he stroked the kitten. The kitten mewed again but now as in thanks for helping his friend.

Actually Rikuo didn't seem to mind it as much as he thought he should. Just comforting Kazahaya seemed to help easesome of the pain hehid deep in his own heart. He felt protective of the boy in front of him. He chuckled to himself; maybe he had a little animal in him too.
