I have nothing to give by lyradaemon

Disclaimer: I own nothing. Song called 'Fear' by Sarah McLachlan

Morning smiles
like the face of a newborn child
innocent unknowing
Winter's end
promises of a long lost friend
speaks to me of comfort

But I fear
I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose
here in this lonely place
tangled up in our embrace
there's nothing I'd like
better than to fall
but I fear I have nothing to give

She loved Numair with all her heart and she didn't doubt his feelings for her. Yet her mind was still full of uncertainty. Why would Numair love her? She had nothing to give him, nothing to offer. He was the most brilliant mage in all of Tortall and respected by everyone, including the King. She couldn't even compare.

She had heard whispering about her as she went past. "What does Numair see in her?" They would say. "She only wants him because she's a nobody without him." While Numair told her to just ignore them, a tiny part of her couldn't help but believe them.

Wind in time
rapes the flower trembling on the vine
nothing yields to shelter it
from above
they say temptation will destroy our love
the never ending hunger

But I fear
I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose
here in this lonely place
tangled up in our embrace
there's nothing I'd like
better than to fall
but I fear
I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose
I have nothing to give
We have so much to lose...

The doubt kept on creeping back, no matter how hard she tried to put it out her mind. She wasn't good enough for Numair. It was all some adolescent infatuation and Numair had simply got caught up in the moment. She was nothing without him…

Suddenly the door opened and Numair came in. Daine looked up at him with fear and sadness in her eyes. "What's wrong magelet?" Numair asked looking concerned.

Daine looked away. How could she explain this to him? But he respected her and would want to know what was troubling her – she knew he wouldn't laugh. "I'm afraid," she whispered.

"Of what?"

"I have nothing to offer you Numair. Nothing to give you. I'm nothing without you, and I would only be in your way. Nothing to give yet so much to lose…" her voice trailed off as the tears welled up in her blue-grey eyes.

Numair's only reply was to sweep her up in his arms and cradle her close to his chest. "Never think like that again Daine, do you hear me? I love you and have done so for more years than I can count. You have so much to offer me – your love, your trust, your kindness. Is that 'nothing'? I have nothing to lose by loving you and everything to lose by leaving you. You never have to fear anything, I promise." He kissed the top of her head and held her tightly.

Daine lifted her face and searched his eyes. She found what she had been looking for; his eyes held all the love, trust and truth that she had been hoping for. All doubts and misgivings rapidly fled and she was left with an overwhelming feeling of love towards her friend, teacher and lover.

"I love you Numair," she said simply.

"I love you too Daine, always," he replied and kissed her.
