Life Of An Orphan

For the third time in two days, the couple didn't pick her.

She was starting to wonder why. Why her? Why did she have to be the strange one? The one with one eye? All she wanted was to be normal.

She ran from the orphan viewing room and locked herself in the bathroom. Whenever something annoyed her or made her upset, she came here. She couldn't explain it. This was the one room in the Orphanarium which made her feel happy. Sometimes, it even felt like a home.

She mentally kicked herself for thinking that. It's a bathroom for God sakes. How can that possibly feel like a place where people are loved and looked after. Not that I'd know what a real home felt like. And I probably never will.

Tears came almost straight away after this thought. It reminded her of what sort of life she was missing out on, one with nice normal people. Or a life with her parents.

Her train of unhappy thought ended when there was a knock on the door. She knew who it would be immediately.

"Go away Mr. Vogel." She called out, trying unsuccessfully to hide the sadness in her voice. Why did he always have to come? All she wanted was to wallow in the depths of her own depression in private. Usually, he stayed for about twenty minuets, trying to persuade her to get out. This time, he seemed to leave after only a few pathetic attempts. "Good" she said out loud in her best teenage snarl. "Glad you listened, at last." This wasn't what she was really thinking. Even he doesn't care anymore. She never felt more alone.

She felt the familiar stinging in her eyes. She put her face in her hands and let herself cry again. This time, however, it felt like she wasn't alone anymore. It was as if an invisible someone was offering comfort, wrapping their arm around her, protecting her from the harsh life of an orphan.

Little did she know, the feeling was real.

"How is she Munda?"

"She's crying. That married couple picked someone else to adopt. Some boy named Adlai I think."

"Not again." Turanga Morris paused. "Do you think that we did the best thing by giving her up?"

"Of course we did. When she's older, she'll have a normal life. She'll be able to do all the things we couldn't. She'll be able to work at a normal job and marry a normal person. She'll do great."

They stared at the small part of their daughter they could see from their position down in the Orphanarium sewer system. Her tears were lessening and her breathing slowly returned to normal; all the while with her mother's arm around her.

She was never was alone as she thought.
