He stared at the horse. It was a beautiful chestnut mare, with a flaxen man and tail. It nickered softly and gently butted his arm.

The red haired girl smiled. "I think she likes you."

He reached out and touched the pony's neck, feeling the silky coat. He stared into her liquid brown eyes, and something passed between them. It was then that he knew it. Their destinies were intertwined.

"She's so beautiful," he breathed.

The red-haired girl giggled. "If you want her, then you'll have to find a song book, hidden in the stables, learn the song, and then play it to her! Think you can do it, fairy boy?"

He nodded. He would do anything to get her.

Never let it be said that he didn't try his hardest.

TEN YEARS LATER

The greedy hooded figure grinned. "You see? All you have to do, young man, is catch me a Poe, and I'll give you something! Good?"

Link nodded. He was a bit short on rupees, and Epona was restless, so he accepted the job.

"Good, good. Oh, and look out for the Wolfos. There's a pack out there, and they're big."

Link drew his bow, knocking an arrow. Epona snorted and galloped faster. Link didn't need to guide her, not with his hands, anyway. They were connected by thought, and she moved exactly where he needed her. He aimed, and released, sending the arrow speeding towards the Poe. It pierced its chest, and letting out a howl of rage it died, the lantern in its clawed hand falling to the ground, releasing the Poe's spirit.

He was about to dismount and capture it when he heard it. A snarl that sent shivers down his spine. Spinning round he let loose another arrow, catching a Wolfos in mid-jump, and it crashed to the ground with a howl.

More closed in, and suddenly, out of nowhere, a Wolfos pounced, digging its razor sharp claws into Epona's flank. Another tackled Link, pushing him off the horse, its glistening fangs inches from his face. He thrust his sword into the creature's breast before running to his injured mount. The horse had reared up, her eyes wild with pain. With a cry she brought her hooves crashing down, crushing the Wolfos' head beneath her powerful hooves. But more came, too many for even her, sending her crashing to the ground.

"No!" Link cried, and he rushed into the fray to save her.

The ground was drenched with blood, but however may he killed, two more would be waiting to take their place.

Behind him, Epona whinnied weakly, her own weight slowly crushing the breath from her lungs.

"I won't let you die, Epona," Link whispered fiercely, "I won't!"

Blinking back hot tears, he held up his shield, sword in front of him. They would not have her. Screaming, he charged at the monsters.

Never let it be said that he didn't try his hardest.
