Winry sighed, and watched Ed spar with his brother, Al, through the window. He'll be leaving again. Winry rubbed her eyes furiously with the back of her hand, refusing to let the tears show. She slowly got up, her heart ripping apart with every step, and reached for a razor.

She'd been cutting herself, day after day, as soon as she had learned he'd be going back. Again. And she's been wearing long sleeve shirts, and jackets to hide what she'd been doing. She walked silently in her bedroom, and grabbed the razor between her thumb and forefinger. She sliced through her skin, blood appearing in beads and dots. The breeze blowing in from the window stung the cuts in her arm. The pain made her bite her lip. One for my parents. She cut herself again. One for Al. She cut the letters E and D in her arm. And one for Ed. She cried, tears falling on her arms, and mixing with the blood she drew. She dropped her razor, and it bounced under her bed. Don't leave, Ed! Don't leave, don't leave, don't-

Someone burst in, and a familiar voice laughed. "Winry, hide me, Al's gonna-" She looked up, and felt a lump grow in her throat. Ed. He stared at her with wide, golden eyes; his hair still in a simple braid. His white shirt ruffled, showing the muscled body underneath, and he was staring. Winry turned her head, and cried softly to herself, rocking back and forth like a small child who had lost herself in the woods.

"Oh, Jesus, Win-" Ed kicked the door shut, and grabbed her shoulders. "Who did this? Did he come in through the window?" And he glanced down at her arms, horrified. And his eyes widened even more when he saw his name, cut into her arm. Winry fell silent, tears still pouring down her face, and she looked away from him. "WINRY! Tell me, damnit! Who's doing this? Who did it? I'll kill that bastard!" Winry looked up, tears in her eyes. He looked so scared, so frightened, like he'd never been before. She could almost hear her heart breaking.

"I-I did it." She whispered it quietly, and she started crying again, tears leaking down her face, and her breath coming in short gasps.

"Oh, God, Winry…" Ed lifted her arm, and wrapped his fingers in hers, before hugging her. "Why?"

Winry shook in his arms. "I can't let you go! You can't go back, Ed! I won't let you!" Her voice grew hysterical. "NO NO NO NO NO!" She screamed at him, pounding his chest, pouring her heart out in one breath. "I worry about you and Al getting killed every day! I worry about how you're doing, if you're alright! Don't you even care! I don't want to lose you! I don't want to lose you like I did Mom and Dad! I hate you, Ed! I HATE YOU!" She gasped for air, and sobbed. Ed hugged her even tighter. The blood from her arms stained his shirt, red blossoming across his chest.

All he could do was hold her. He couldn't promise her he'd live. He couldn't promise her he'd be okay. But he could hold her, and tell her he loved her.

Just for a little while.
