A/N: I know I have been posting many many many one-shots recently, but I wrote this on a whim and fell in love with it, so I had to post it.

A girl and boy, enemies not five months ago, now sat under a beech tree by the lake, quietly talking.

The girl said the boy's name, and the boy replied:

"Mm?"

"Do you - erm, well, what would you - er, I think I - What would you do if I said I liked you right now?"

"Pinch myself and make sure I wasn't dreaming?" the boy asked, joking.

The girl laughed, but it didn't reach her eyes. She waited a few moments then said, "What would you do if I kissed you?"

The boy looked at her, into her eyes, and noticed something. She wasn't joking. He murmured, "I'd kiss you back."

And with that, the girl closed her eyes, hoped for the best, and kissed him.

In the Gryffindor tower, a lone Gryffindor stood watching the couple under the beech tree.

He felt a million pieces of sharp glass go through his heart as it broke into pieces. He loved that girl - as had his best friend, and now his best friend had her – and he had nothing.

He had loved her since she had first spoken to him - 7 years ago, asking the time. Just the way she had asked, and her voice, made his stomach do flip-flops. It hadn't hurt that she was, and is, drop-dead gorgeous, either.

He had continued to fall in love with her year after year, as she seemed to become sweeter and nicer to everyone she knew. They had become friends, yet the lone Gryffindor knew they could never be more. Not with his - "furry little problem".

He knew that he could never have her, yet he knew that he would always want her. He needed to go away. Get away from all this - he didn't think he could handle it.

So the lone Gryffindor began to form a plan: he would run away from everyone. He wouldn't endanger them - and he wouldn't have to witness the continual affection of his two best friends.

On the other side of the school, in an abandoned classroom, an ex-boyfriend of the girl under the tree, and best friend to the boy, glanced casually out the window. He saw them kissing, and instead of sorrow, he felt joy. For his best friend had finally secured the girl. The ex-boyfriend shrugged, and continued snogging a 6th year Hufflepuff.

The girl pulled away, gasping for air, and the boy said, "Go out with me."

With no hesitation, the girl nodded, and began snogging him again.

In a deep dungeon, gazing out of a port-hole like object that allowed the Slytherins to see outdoors, a greasy git stared out at the couple. He had been secretly in love with the girl, and in obvious hatred of the boy.

The greasy git slammed his fist down on the table, ink spewing everywhere. His only chance of happiness was crushed by his nemesis, like it always is in those comic books the Gryfindors are seen reading.

His heart turned colder, and he knew what he had to do. If she wouldn't love him, he would find someone who would. He reached into his bag and pulled out a letter. He read it over, and, pulling out his wand, apparated to the location stated.

The girl was Lily Evans.

The boy was James Potter.

Lily Evans and James Potter would marry one day, and be killed four years later for protecting their one-year old child.

The lone Gryffindor would leave them forever, once school was out, and only come back once their son was 12 years old.

The ex-boyfriend would continue to be their friend, but would be framed for their murder, sending him to Azkaban.

The greasy git became a Death-Eater that day, and would go on to kill the most beloved Headmaster Hogwarts had ever seen.

It's amazing the things a small conversation can do.
