I am going back and rewriting/editing this fic after years and years. It was first published in 2005. Here it is almost a decade later in 2014 and I'm finally getting back to it. I was sixteen at the time of the first writing and now I'm 26. Figured I might as well give it some love.

My author notes will be more like how I do them now. There will be a (#) and then after the chapter a note with the same number to show where I needed to put in a note. Thank you for reading/rereading.

I do not own Inuyasha or Yu Yu Hakusho. I do not make money off this fanfiction.

Chapter 1: A Chance Ass Kicking

Kagome was walking home from practice. Her bow and quiver of arrows were hung over her shoulder, the bow in its case. She remembers why she bought the case over a year ago. It was easily opened in case of a fight. But who was she kidding there never was a fight in these modern times. She has not fired an arrow at anything but targets since Naraku's defeat and death. She had used her powers and with the help of the three lords; Sesshomaru, Inuyasha and Koga, she wiped that bastard off the face of the earth. But that was her problem. No wish was ever made. She was thrown back to her world after Inuyasha was given the finished jewel. She now knew she was wrong about the demon population in the future/present. In her history class they were talking about her story and other tails that help build Japan, she learned demons were moved to another world by King Enma, the ruler of spirit world.

Through the park and she would be home. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. 'Demon! Coming my way fast.' In a blink of the eye Kagome had her bow ready and an arrow notched. That is when she saw him. Huge with a body like a snake. "Hey baka! What you're running from can't be as bad for your health as I am." She let the arrow fly and it hit the snake demon as four boys skidded to a stop at the scene.

o.O

They got the report that a low level snake demon was in the human world. Kuwabara could have taken it but they all needed a good chase. Hiei was the one following it close so he backed off to have the rare chase last just a bit longer. They all stopped when they felt great power kill the snake. There she was, a beauty in her own right. Her bow showing signs of just being fired, the wind blowing her hair in all directions. 'How dare she claim to be more powerful than me?' Hiei thought, red eyes glaring a hole through the woman. She had on a training garb, as though she had just left archery range. Her only jewelry was a chain the one she use to keep the jewel on. "Who are you? And what makes you think you can call us weak?"

"Demons normally don't hunt other demons. That is the work of those of us with miko blood, so leave or you can suffer the same fate." The girl's voice was cold and held an authority that came with great power. Little did they know the tone came from her being forced to live away from the friends that had come to be family to her, it was just her pain that caused her callused ways.

"Listen you little bitch, miko are nothing." Hiei believed the woman needed to be informed her place. She called him weak and took away his first hunt in a while. The peace of the Makai was making it hard to let his stresses be relieved.

"He means most miko today do not hold the power of their ancestors," Kurama said in a more tactful manner. He had not felt the kind of power the girl held in such a long time, it caused his skin to crawl and his spine to straighten.

"I am well aware. But I had reasons to insure that I have the power that others do not think they require." Kagome said, putting her bow away sensing the newest arrival. She knew there would be no danger from the males before here with the fairy girl around.

"Hello everyone and Kagome it is nice to see you again. Wait Kagome you're back!" Botan jumped from her ore and into Kagome's arms. The blue haired woman hugged the miko close, like she had finally found a lost friend.

"How have you been the last 500 years?" Kagome gave her first true smile she since she return to the present this last time. "Koenma still not getting it is he?"

"Heavens no." Botan broke from her old friend finally to turn to the boys. Even though she wished to gossip with her friend she still had a job to do. "Kagome this is Hiei, Kurama, Yusuke, and…"

"Last and least Kuwabara." Hiei finished for her. Kagome gave a bow of greeting and stood to her full height once again. She noticed that she was about the same height as the shortest of their group and smiled. At least these were not youkai that would tower over her like those of the past.

"I am Higurashi Kagome. You may call me Kagome."

"Oh Kag, only people who don't know you or you don't like call you that."

"True but they are new to me and three of them are youaki."

"Wait you can tell we're youkai?"

"Of course I can. What part of powerful miko don't you understand. The short guy is fire...or that's what he prefers you to see. The pretty boy is kitsune, hiding in a human avatar but kitsune...can't keep a trickster hidden from me. And you. I'm not sure what kind of hanyou you are but you are hanyou." Kagome said pointing to Hiei, Kurama, and then Yusuke each in turn.

"She's good." Kurama said kind of amazed that she could even sense that he was a youkai, much less that he was a kitsune.

"You know Koenma's offer is still good?" Botan said once again facing Kagome fully. Her smile made the young hereon of her tragic fairy tale smile and shrug her shoulders.

O.o

The office of the prince of spirit world had not changed much, maybe the new tech but it was even in the same place in the castle. When she was thrown back to her time...Kagome had made a stop here. It was here she was asked to be the protector for the Earth and all its inhabitants. She was to be the next Spirit Detective.

The heart broken miko declined. The sorrow in her heart was too great at the time. Koenma saw this and let her go. He never thought to see her again until her death which was not to come for many years.

The doors to his office opened. After stamping yet another piece of paper, in yet another file, the prince of the Spirit World looked up and almost fell out of his chair. "Kagome!"

"Yes sir?" Kagome asked in the polite manner her mother had taught her. She was still a proper Japanese young lady after all.

"Don't tell me you got yourself killed." Koenma now had his head in his teenage hands. Letting the Shikon Miko die before her time would be the death of him. His father would have him doing even more paperwork than he already was forced to do. He would never have freedom from this desk.

"No sir, I just saved your detectives' asses." Okay maybe proper lady was pushing it...but she knew how to pretend when it was needed. Kagome's smirk was more than enough to prove how much she had changed with her time of healing. She was becoming more and more like the self she discovered during her travels with Inuyasha.

"You four let the last powerful miko go into battle?" The four boys were now looking in different directions. "Yusuke! How dare you let the keeper of the Shikon no Tama go into battle?"

The jewel had been missing for right around five hundred years. Hiei was looking to claim it in his youth, he wanted to be able to declare himself to be the only one that ever got past Kikyo. But when he got there she was dead and buried. No word came from the jewel for another fifty years. By then he had no need for it so he just went around training and stealing anything he wanted or needed. Hiei looked at the girl in front of him. She was human but how did she protect something that had not been in extense for five hundred year? Then how did she know Botan five hundred years ago? Too many questions and no answers.

"Hiei will show you to your new room, Kagome." Koenma looked at the dark youkai in question then back to Kagome. It was clear that Botan had introduced them all because the girl went to stand next to the male. "Training will begin at seven sharp." Kagome inclined her head in arrangement and turned to Hiei.

"This way, wench." The fiery youkai turned on heel and headed out to where their boarding was located.

"The name is Kagome. KA-GO-ME." She corrected the jerk leading her to her room. It wasn't a hard name to remember, it was common unlike Hiei. And since when did such a short male get named after a mountain? His parents must have had high hopes for him.

Oh, the little wench will pay tomorrow in the dojo. That is if she even gets up in time. Genkai will eat her alive if she is late. (1)

"So where do we train?" Kagome asked, unsure where the dojo would be in the Spirit World.

"Genkai's."

Appartently she was not going to get much out of him. "You're kidding right?"

"I have no time for kidding." Hiei said, finally forming a complete sentence that was not an insult to her person or her intelligence. 'Who does she think I am? The baka?'

"Genkai's, as in her temple? I'm surprised she would put up with you losers. Or as she would put it dimwits." Kagome was now holding her sides and laughing her head off. The older woman, pink hair and all, had always been a great source of entertainment for the miko when it came to her way of training.

"Do you know her?" Kurama walked up behind the ever-so-happy couple, afraid they might kill each other if left alone for too long.

"I am a miko. Her temple like many others, is one I visit to refresh my powers. Although I live in a shrine, I love to visit other temples." Kagome said to the kitsune with a smile. "Kurama tell me. Do know of other kitsune that lived near Tokyo?" She paused. "I had a friend he was like a son to me. His name was Shippo and he had red brown hair and so was his tail."

"You know Lord Fox Fire?" Kurama asked surprised that the woman would know such a high profile lord.

"That was his attack." She said smiling in memory of him using it whenever he could to try and protect her.

"About three hundred and fifty years ago he challenged the lord of the Southern Lands. He won and gained the title. He renamed himself when did so." Kurama said explaining some of the history of the Makai. "He became one of the youngest lords we have in the Makai."

"The explains a lot. And he is still alive?" Kagome asked hoping for the best.

"I would think so, I have not heard of his death. Word of a lord dying would spread quickly. Youkai would try and challenge for his title." Kurama said smiling. It was what the miko had wanted to hear.

Hiei got tired of listening to the two. "If you want to talk to her lead her to her room." And with that he was gone.

"What is his problem?" Kagome asked, sticking her tongue out after him.

"He once was after the jewel."

"Oh, who wasn't at some point in time? If they did not want the power they wanted to test their skills against Kikyo. Wait, there was one, Sesshomaru. He was a great lord. Man, he had a nice ass too. And such pretty hair."

"Kagome, you also know the western lord?" The girl really was full of surprises. "Are there any other youkai that you would know?"

"Everyone at the final battle with Naraku." Kagome said watching the gears in his head turning.

"Lord Koga? Lord Fox Fire? Lord Sesshomaru? Lord Inuyasha?"

"They all were my friends. I am happy to hear that Sesshomaru ended up giving Inuyasha his title back. There were humans too. Sango and Miroku." 'Along with Kirara.' "Did Fox Fire ever mate?"

"A neko. Rumor is that she found her humanoid form for him."

Kagome was ready to shake him for the information. "What was her name?"

"Kirara, I think. It has been a long time since I lived as a youkai. I have a normal human life these days...well mostly normal."

"You have to be kidding! I really have to speak to them." Kagome said a bit excited at the chance of seeing her friends again. She did not know if they would be able to live the long centuries but now she had confirmation they were alive and well.

"Here you are. You are free to come and go. That rule was set up for those of us with lives. The girls will be here in the morning, you can deal with them when they get here. I on the other hand am the one getting them so I get the pleasure of having them before that. Good night Kagome."

"Call me Kag and good night to you as well. Oh wait is there a phone I can call my mother on?"

"Next to your bed. There is dialing info next to it. Sleep well."

"Thank you and you do the same."

Kagome walked into the room given to her. It was dark blue almost black. There was a full size canopy bed and a nice sized rug to the right of the room and center. On the left was a desk and another door when opened relived the bathroom that was to share by the looks of the other door. Back in the room was a closet and there were some training outfits in there. The window was across from the entry door and it had a view of a clearing and lake. 'Prefect for training.' As she said those words she saw a black clad figure coming from the tree line. 'Hiei?'

Hiei walked out of the house when he left Kagome with Kurama. Just taking in her scent was driving him insane with desire. She smelt like wild flowers but not in a girly, too much perfume way. She was a fresh waterfall and he was not going to last long in her presence. Maybe he could just stay away from her until he was forced to be near her. That would never work, who was he trying to kid? Himself.

Kagome laid on her bed. It felt good to relax. Picking up the phone she listened to it ring as she wait for someone to answer. "Moshi-moshi?"

"Hey mom. It's me." Kagome said knowing that her mother would know who she was just by her voice. (2) "-I was calling to tell you I got a job on the way home."

"What is this 'job'?" The elder Higurashi did not want to worry about why her daughter was not home telling her about a new job to her face.

"Defending the Earth. You know, the usual.

"That sounds nice honey, when will you be home?"

"Later this week. Could you call the dojo and tell them I can't teach this week and that I would not mind Kat to take my classes."

"Sure thing honey. Oh and have fun. See you when you get home." Higurashi-san knew just by the sound of her daughter's voice that something had caught the young woman's attention.

"See ya soon, Mom." There was a knock on the door.

"What kind of lie are you telling your mother?" Yusuke asked as he leaned against the door frame. Her answer surprised him.

"No lie, she knew of my time traveling days...why not now?" Yusuke turned to leave.

"Dinner is ready and I am warning you now don't touch the ice cream." (3)

Hiei came back to the house for dinner. When he walked into the dinning hall the only empty chair was next to Kagome. 'The fates are against me.' Little did he know she was thinking the same thing.

End Chapter

Original Ending Note

Snow: Okay this was the first chapter tell me if I am wasting mine and your time.

Hiei: Hn it is Snow's bed time so go find another writer to mess with.

Snow: Thank you Hiei. See ya when I see ya.

New Ending Note

1. I am going to have Genkai alive...One because when I wrote this the first time, she hadn't died yet where I was in the anime. And two she makes for fun torture for Yusuke and the lot.

2. This is how I talk to my mom on the phone.

3. When I first wrote this...apparently the internet believed that Hiei was Ice Cream Obsessed. I mean there were fanfiction and fanart and everything about it. I'm keeping it. It's something from the time and it's a rewrite.
