Fate
It was a beautiful night. The sky was a clarity of darkness, and as the fullness of the moon shone brightly in the spotlight, the stars glimmered in the background. The streets were half-empty, and the only motorcycle that was on the road sped swiftly through the non-existent traffic, carrying two laughing figures.
"What a great night," Marissa murmured, wrapping her arms tightly around Ryan's waist as she rested her head on his right shoulder, to get a better view of the road ahead of them.
She felt her boyfriend smile. "Yeah. But that was because I spent it with you."
She blushed. "Aw, that's so sweet. I guess I should say the same thing."
They daringly criss-crossed around the only present vehicles that there was, as they made their way back home. Both were grinning. Several months of love and friendship was close enough to being in heaven. It was paradise for them. They may have encountered more than a few ups and downs, but in the end, they always made their way back together. It was almost like they were made for each other.
Many of them would've called it destiny, but she called it true love.
Ryan turned sharply around the corner, and the cool breeze blew refreshingly against her face, making her hair billow behind her in a cascade of silky locks. It wasn't until they were a few feet from a nearby grocery store that Ryan stiffened. Marissa impulsively tightened her hold on his waist.
"Ryan, what's wrong?" she asked, the worry showing in her voice.
Ryan spared a second to look at her. In those beautiful irises, that she often drowned herself in, was reflected an indescribable emotion. It could've been mistaken for love, but Marissa knew him well enough to know that it was something quite different.
It was like love spilled on shattered glass.
Ice gripped her heart. And her eyes betrayed the fear that she felt. Ryan saw it too. He smiled. A sad smile. "Do you love me, Marissa?" he asked in a soft voice.
Marissa didn't know why, but she felt like breaking down in tears. But she held it in, she may have struggled, but she did not want him to see her in this state of weakness. "Of course I do, Ryan. You're my whole world."
He smiled and kissed her softly on the lips before turning his attention back onto the road. "I love you too."
It was then that her whole world crumbled.
…
It was all over the local news the next day.
Two lovers going for a midnight drive on their motorcycle had crashed, right into the cement wall of a Seven-Eleven grocery store. The police had checked over the bike and had reported that the brakes were broken.
The male had not survived the crash.
Ryan had known. He had known that the brakes were broken halfway through their ride.
Many would've called it a tragedy. But Marissa called it fate. She could only be grateful that they were able to share their last moment in true love.
