They're Coming.

Noah Percy awoke. He knew that something had caused him to rouse from his slumber. He sat up, looking around wildly. It couldn't have been a nightmare. He always remembered them. He wondered and wondered what it could have been when he suddenly heard a sound.

It was loud. A BANG!

He knew this must have been the sound that had awakened him. He'd heard it before, that he knew. But he'd always managed to fall asleep again. Not tonight. Noah waited in the dark, listening.

The sound came again. And AGAIN.

His heart pounded. 'What is happening? Ivy said it was impossible for the sky to fall!' And that was the only explanation had for the curious sound.

Meanwhile, the banging had become a steady beat. Noah was terrified, because his parents were in the room next to his where the sounds were coming from! In a moment of bravery, he decided to investigate.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

Noah slowly opened the door to his parents' room, his breathing rushed.

What met his eyes was quite frightening indeed.

Two bright red creatures were lying on his parents' bed and doing things that Noah had only heard about in whispered gossip, but had never really understood. He almost cried out in horror at the sight of Those We Don't Speak Of, but he held his tongue, mesmorized.

One was atop the other and was thrusting heavily. Moaning followed. It did not sound like the moaning that Noah had heard the creatures make from the woods so many times before.

"Yes!" one yelled. "Robert! Oh, yes! Thank you!"

Now Noah was totally perplexed, because sometimes Papa was called Robert. And the voices sounded familiar. Cautiously, Noah crept toward the bed.

The creatures had no fangs or snouts like Mr. Walker had said!

In fact, the creatures looked just like Mama and Papa!

They were Mama and Papa!

Noah could see Mama's face, at least, under the hood of the cloak. She noticed him, and screamed, but in a different way all together.

The Percys stopped instantly, and stared at their son, too stunned to speak.

Noah stared back for a moment, innocent eyes questioning... And then he burst out laughing. He laughed so hard he fell on the floor. He clapped as tears rolled down his cheeks.

"They're coming..." he muttered between giggles. (It was what you were supposed to say whenever a creature was spotted.)

"They're coming."

From then on, Noah Percy always found it quite hysterical whenever the creatures were mentioned.
