A Surprise Never Given

Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing.

Notes: I decided to do this while I'm trying to come up with something to write for Make Me Feel. Believe me, I know what I want to write, but the problem is getting it into the proper words. So, I'm doing this little angst thing that was floating around my head for a week or two.

A Surprise Never Given

Rosie smiled proudly as she watched Otto present his beautiful experiment. She was so proud of him. She couldn't believe it herself that his dream was coming true.

She couldn't wait to tell him when this was over.

She had decided a month ago to wait until he had presented to tell him. It would add to his excitement like none other. After all, they had been trying for years.

She tried focusing on her husband's speech and smiled when he threw a wink her way. The arms were now attached and operating, and she knew it wouldn't be much longer until she could tell him. She tried to imagine the look on his face, and she unconsciously pressed her hands onto her belly.

She turned to watch him like the rest of the crowd as he set to work. The goggles were now safely secured over his chocolate eyes and his face was now of total concentration.

Looking away from him for a brief and quick moment she took a look at Peter. He was such a wonderful boy; maybe it would be like him. Smiling at the thought she mentally noted that they would have to call the young man and tell him the good news.

Her love gave his speech on the precious tritium and gave the dreaded acknowledgments to Harry Osborn; she giggled when she saw Otto's expression when the money obsessed young man answered.

The next few moments were amazing and thrilling. She watched the beams of energy hit the small spinning golden ball, and then the small ball of fire became a miniature sun. The on-lookers began clapping and an assistant said that they had a successful fusion.

Otto turned to her; the grin on his face highlighted by the light radiating behind him. She smiled and fought back tears of joy, and instinctively grasped her stomach.

Then she felt a tug on her hand.

Her wedding ring, it was pulling off of her finger.

Looking up startled she saw jewelry and watches fly from the audience and into the fusion reaction. She fought to hold onto the precious gold band and stared at the tech when he said there was a containment breach. Metal was flying off of the walls and people were now running from the building.

Behind her the windows began to creak and the metal stretched inward. Otto was now frantically trying to contain the fusion but he was either too late or unable.

She turned around when she heard a break and stood frozen and fear as large shards of glass came hurtling at her. In the din she could hear Otto scream her name but she could only see the glass.

'This can't be happening!' She thought frantically as the glass came at her at what felt like top-notch slow motion.

' I never got to tell Otto about the bab-'

And then she was gone, along with the beginnings of another life.

End of Story
