Disclaimer: No, I don't own Fruits Basket.

A/N: You could say this fic is after "More in the Question" but it doesn't matter. It's a stand alone. I just recently had my guinea pig die and you could say this is dedicated to my beloved pet who passed away.

Even though she wasn't a dog, or a cat, or a person, I will miss her squeaking dearly. Goodbye Sugar.

Also, thoughts are in italics.

Ode to the Inevitable:

"This is my Ode to the Inevitable,

For all that I could not do for you.

I could not heal you of all sickness,

Nor could I make the pain disappear.

You passed a painless death,

Though it's still sad that you're gone.

Woe to the inevitable,

For it comes quicker then we want.

Taking you from those whom love you,

And those of whom you love.

We give our thanks to you, dear one,

And we think of you always.

And so, our loved one,

Our tears are our ode to you.

Our sadness is our ode to the inevitable."

Tohru finished reading from the paper that was clutched between her trembling hands. Her whole body was shaking and tears ran down her face. She didn't even notice that all the writing on the paper was nearly washed away by the rain. Letting out a shuddering breath, she looked up at the gravesite that was marked simply 'Akito Sohma'. She put the ink washed paper down and onto the grave, then put a small rock on it to hold it in place. Taking one last look at it all, she began to walk away.

I tried to understand, Akito. To understand what it is you went through. But I suppose that I could never imagine what you have been through.

The rain slowed to a stop, and Tohru halted. She turned her head upwards to the sky and couldn't help but notice the clouds clearing and the sun hiding ways to shine through. The corners of her mouth twitched, as if tempting to go into a smile.

You will be missed, Akito.
