A QUIET MOMENT

The room was dim, with only barely enough light peeking through the heavy curtains covering the window for him to make out the shapes of the furniture scattered about against the walls. All was quiet, peaceful. Without his friends there, the mansion sometimes felt empty. But not tonight.

Ryo sighed in content, enjoying the warm weight cuddled against his side that was his wife, Mia. His gaze was soft as he watched her sleep, her head resting against his shoulder and her left arm thrown across his chest. He enjoyed watching her sleep, her face relaxed and calm. Most of all, he enjoyed quiet moments like this, when all the stresses of the day faded away and no worries troubled his mind. Continuing to watch his wife, Ryo marveled once more at the strength, patience and love that she possessed.

Years ago, when they had fought Talpa, she had suffered right along side them, helping them get through those trying times even though she, along with Yulie, had been one of the most vulnerable of their group. Yet she had continued to be their guiding force, their lifeline all throughout that terrible war.

In the aftermath, she had put up with all five of them. Five adolescent boys, each with his own wildly different personality and the occasional clashes that were inevitable while they lived under the same roof. There had been times when even a saint's patience would have been tried with the stunts the young warriors sometimes pulled. And yet somehow Mia had managed to keep any damage, whether physical or emotional, to a minimum while also keeping her own temper. Ryo winced slightly at the memory of the very few times that she hadn't. Fighting the Dynasty was preferable to facing an angry Mia.

What amazed him the most, then and now, was how much she cared for him. A bond between them had begun to form from the moment they first met, and continued to grow throughout the many trials they had later faced. Make no mistake; she cared for all of them. But the fact that she had chosen to give him her heart still had the power to leave Ryo breathless.

A small sound in the silent house caught Ryo's attention, his tiger blue eyes going from his wife's face to the slightly open door of their bedroom. He could faintly make out the sound of White Blaze as the tiger padded softly down the hall. The sound of one of the stairs creaking under the white tiger's massive weight was what must have caught his attention in the first place.

A moment later, the bedroom door quietly creaked as a large striped head pushed it open. The tiger's long body soon followed the head as White Blaze silently made his way toward the thick, comfortable rug at the foot of the bed. Ryo could clearly make out the form of his long-time friend despite the dim light as the tiger made his way to his favorite sleeping spot.

Ryo chuckled softly at the glance White Blaze sent toward the bed to ascertain that yes, indeed, his master and mistress were going to spend the remainder of the night sleeping. The big cat flicked one ear toward the sound before making a noise somewhere between a huff and a sigh at his master's amusement. Ryo didn't know if it was courtesy or something else on the tiger's part that sent White Blaze out of the room at the least hint of amorous activity between the couple, not to return until the tiger was fairly certain that they were finished for the evening.

With a small smile that bordered on a smirk, Ryo snuggled closer to his wife, resting his cheek against her hair, and murmured a drowsy "Good night, White Blaze" before finally drifting off. He barely heard the faint rumble of the tiger's reply as sleep finally claimed him.
