I'm sorry for the abundance of line breaks in this chapter but this place won't let me use my nice, neat, and short asterisk lines to jump into a meanwhile situation.
Riku was angry. Very angry. With a shout he punched the wall of the Secret Place. Pain ripped through his hand and he yowled in pain, holding his hand between his knees. He'd broken a knuckle or two.
"Love hurts doesn't it?."
The boy looked up to see a hooded man standing in front of him.
"I told you Sora would never love you the way you love him."
Riku didn't reply. He was so blinded by his emotions he didn't know what to make of anything right now.
"Give your heart to me, Riku." The man said, holding his hand out. "Open the door. I can take you off this island. I can take you as far away as you want."
Riku held his bleeding and trembling hand and looked up at the hooded man again. He couldn't see his face.
"Sora…" He murmured.
The man laughed, "He and Kairi can go on their own journeys. Don't worry, Riku. I'll take care of all of you…"
Without even thinking about how this man got here Riku reached his injured hand out and put it in the hooded man's hand. The man closed his hand around Riku's and squeezed. Pain shot up the boy's arm and he blacked out.
Sora waited politely and let Kairi kiss him. When she pulled away he smiled sheepishly.
"Is something wrong?" Kairi asked.
"I'm sorry, Kairi. I like someone else…" Sora murmured.
"Oh…" The girl trailed off.
"I'm sorry…" The brunette said again.
"It's okay." Kairi replied.
Awkward silence settled over the two teens. The girl looked at her watch then up at the sky.
"We better get home for dinner."
"Yeah…"
The pair stood up and headed for the docks. They didn't notice Riku's boat there because a mysterious current had dragged the tiny craft under the dock. Only when the two teens got into Sora's boat and were gone did the tide push Riku's boat back into sight. The brunette noticed that the clouds were darkening slightly and frowned.
"We better hurry. It looks like it's going to storm."
Kairi nodded and they rowed a little faster. They reached the marina and put Sora's boat in the storm shed.
"I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" Kairi got onto her bike and pedalled off.
Sora sighed. Kairi wasn't very happy. The boy got onto his bike and rode off. He arrived home to find his mother cooking supper. She smiled at him and he smiled weakly back.
"Is everything okay, Sora?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He replied. "Just kind of tired. I think I'm going to go lay down before supper."
"Okay. Supper will be ready in forty minutes."
Sora nodded and went upstairs. He lay on his bed and sighed.
Kairi wiped her eyes with a tissue and let out a shaky sigh. She was sitting cross-legged on her bed, writing in her diary. Her parents weren't home yet. They were still out with their friends having dinner. The girl finished writing in her diary, threw her tissue out, and stood up. Kairi had just decided to go make supper when she heard a voice outside her window.
"Kairi."
It was Riku. The girl wiped her eyes again and walked to the window. She pulled the window open and looked down into her yard. Riku was standing there but he wasn't looking up at her window.
"Riku?"
"Kairi, will you come to Destiny Island with me?" Riku asked, still not looking up. "I need your help."
"With what?" The girl asked. "It's going to storm soon, Riku."
"Please Kairi, I really need your help. I tried to get Sora to come but he said it was too close to his supper..."
The teen sounded like he was on the verge of tears and Kairi felt sorry for him.
"Okay. I'll come."
Riku nodded and ran off towards the front of the house. Kairi left her home and locked it up. She looked around for Riku and spotted him way in the distance. He was nearly at the turn in the road.
Wow. When did Riku get so fast? He must really need help…
Kairi got her bike out of the garage and pedalled off after Riku. When she reached the marina Riku was nowhere in sight and his boat was gone.
How on Earth?
The girl hesitated. This was getting weird and the clouds overhead were getting darker. She was about to turn back when she heard someone call out to her.
"Kairi! Come on!"
She turned back around to see Riku sitting in his boat on the water some distance away. Had he been there before? Kairi didn't remember looking at that particular spot on the water so she got her boat and started rowing. Riku was way ahead of her again. She wondered what exactly she'd gotten herself into. Thunder rumbled overhead and it seemed like the waves were constantly pushing her little boat towards Destiny Island. It was kind of creepy. Kairi soon reached the island and she tied her boat beside Riku's. The boy was gone again and she stood on the beach, looking around for him.
"Kairi! Over here!" Riku called.
She looked up just in time to see him vanish into the Secret Place. Kairi hesitated again slightly before following Riku. The teen entered the Secret Place and shivered. It seemed more dark and damp than it usually did.
"Riku?" She asked quietly.
"In here!" His voice echoed back to her.
Hugging herself, Kairi slowly made her way through the cave and around the corner. As she rounded the bend the first thing she saw was the door. It was open. However her attention was quickly diverted when she saw Riku lying on the ground in front of the door and the Riku she'd followed here standing beside him.
"W-what…" She stuttered, looking from one Riku to the other. "What is going on here?"
Kairi let out a gasp and backed up so quickly her back bumped into the side of the cave as the Riku she'd followed looked at her. There were two black holes were his eyes should've been. She trembled all over as the fake Riku started to dissolve into a black mist. The real Riku still lay motionless on the floor. As the fake Riku dissolved more of that black mist started to waft out from the open door. The girl ran to the real Riku and put her arms under his. She hugged him close and started to drag him backwards, trying to get them both out of there. She looked up at the door to see a pair of yellow eyes staring out at her. The girl screamed as something leapt out of the darkness and knocked her to the ground.
A loud thunder shook some of Sora's CDs off the shelf and he sat up.
"Wow. This is going to be one heck of a storm…" Suddenly his stomach felt like it dropped out. "The raft won't hold out long in this weather. I better go secure it."
Without even thinking Sora climbed out his window, down the lattice, and got his mother's bike from the garage. He pedalled off as fast as he could, hoping to beat the storm.
"Sora!" April called up the stairs. "Dinner is ready!" She got no answer. "Sora?"
April heard a weird noise behind her and turned around. Her eyes widened when she saw three strange creatures examining their dinner.
"What the hell?" She cried.
The three shadow-like creatures looked up at her and April cried out, running upstairs, wanting to get to Sora's room and get him out. One of the thing's grabbed her ankle, making her fall. She banged her head on the stairs when she fell and the creature dragged the unconscious woman back downstairs.
Mileena screamed as she came into the kitchen to find her husband lying on the floor and some weird black thing sitting on his chest. Lee's gaze was frighteningly empty and the creature started creeping towards her.
"No! Stay away!"
Mileena heard Jiro screaming and ran to the baby's room. A creature was perched over the basinet and Jiro was crying loudly. Mileena grabbed the diaper bag and swung it as hard as she could. It smacked soundly into the shadow creature's head, sending it flying across the room. Mileena scooped her baby up and ran for the front door. She never made it. Mileena slumped forward onto her knees as the creature stole her heart. Jiro wailed even louder as he fell from his mother's grasp and rolled down her lap onto the floor. Another creature pounced on the baby and all was silent.
Wakka watched, tears rolling down his cheeks, as his father slumped to the floor. Chappu was already gone. The creatures got him outside. The redhead backed away as the creatures crept towards him. He turned and ran out the front door, heading for Tidus' home. He passed Tidus' mother on his way. She must have been coming home from her Judo lesson. The front door of Tidus' house was wide open and Jecht was lying motionless in the doorway. Wakka jumped over him.
"Tidus!"
"Wakka!" The blonde called back. "Help me! I'm in the kitchen!"
Wakka grabbed an umbrella from the front closet and charged into the kitchen to find Tidus trying to fight creatures off with a spatula. The redhead whacked the creatures away and made his way to Tidus. He hugged the blonde as over a dozen creatures started slinking into the kitchen. Tidus clung to him, his tears soaking into Wakka's shirt.
"I love you, Tidus." Wakka murmured.
"I love you too…"
The pair fell to the floor, still in each other's arms, as the creature's stole their hearts.
Selphie held a whimpering Miki close. They were hiding under Selphie's bed. Sazuka and Téa were downstairs in front of the TV. They were both lying on the floor staring blankly at static. Their mother was in the kitchen slumped over the table, her spilt tea still dripping onto the floor. Miki whimpered and Selphie clapped her hand over her sister's mouth as the bedroom door slowly swung open. Suddenly the long bony hand of a shadow creature shot under the bed and grabbed Miki, ripping her from Selphie's arms. Miki had barely managed to scream when one of the creature's silenced her. Selphie curled up into a tiny ball and started crying. She knew she was next and sobbed loudly.
"Mommy…!" Selphie cried as she was dragged out from underneath the bed.
Riku's eyes opened. There were creatures all around him but he wasn't afraid of them anymore. The boy sat up and flexed his hand. His knuckles were no longer broken. Riku got to his feet, turned around, stepped over Kairi's unconscious form, and left the Secret Place.
As Sora rowed closer to Destiny Island he saw that Riku and Kairi's boats were already there. He tied his boat to the dock then looked up at the sky. His mouth fell open slightly. There was a huge black sphere floating over Destiny Island.
"What the hell is that?"
The brunette spotted Riku standing on Paopu Island staring up at the sphere and started to run towards him. He cried out and fell back onto his bottom as a shadow creature appeared in front of him. More creatures appeared around him. Sora got to his feet and jumped over the creature in front of him. As he ran for Paopu Island more of the creatures appeared. Once he finally reached Riku there were nearly fifty of them on the beach.
"Riku!" He cried. "What's going on? Where's Kairi?"
"The door has opened…" Riku murmured in reply.
"What?"
"The door has opened, Sora!" He repeated with more conviction. "Now we can go to the outside world!"
"What are you talking about?" Sora exclaimed. "We have to find Kairi and get out of here!"
"Kairi's coming with us! Once we step through, we might not be able to come back. We may never see our parents again. There's no turning back. But this may be our only chance. We can't let fear stop us! I'm not afraid of the darkness!"
"Riku! You're talking like a nut! I thought you wanted to come back here!"
Before Riku could reply or Sora could continue a black shadowy mass rose up from the ground. Sora struggled. It was like being trapped in thick molasses or something. Riku didn't seem to be worried at all. In fact he smiled and held his hand out to Sora.
"Come with me, Sora…"
Sora didn't reply and kept struggling. There was something different about Riku. Something he didn't like. It sent chills up his spine. The boy kept struggling. He was thinking about Kairi and his mother. He had to save them. Suddenly the shadow let Sora go. He tumbled backwards and could only watch helplessly as the shadow thing consumed Riku and vanished.
"Riku!" Sora cried out and a creature jumped in front of him.
Suddenly there was a brilliant flash of light and the creature ran off. The teen blinked, dumbfounded, as he found himself suddenly holding a weapon of some kind.
"Keyblade…" A bodiless voice whispered in Sora's ear.
Sora leapt to his feet. Something was telling him to go to the Secret Place. With one last glance at where Riku had disappeared Sora ran for the cave. He found Kairi inside. She looked terrible and was barely conscious, half-sitting against the cave wall.
"Sora…" She whispered.
As Sora ran closer to her the door suddenly swung open and a powerful black wind swept Kairi right off the ground.
"Kairi!" Sora called.
He tried to grab her but she went right through him and vanished.
"No! Kairi!"
Sora tried to hang onto the cave walls but he couldn't get a decent grip. The wind swept Sora up and carried him out of the Secret Place and to his destiny.
The End
