Chapter 1: Back Home

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

          Dear Amara.

I'm really sorry. Believe me I didn't mean to hurt you. My past came back and bit me in the ass, which is why I had to leave. Please understand.

            Kai

"Damn it, that one sucks even more than the last." Nineteen-year-old Kai Hiwatari crumpled up the letter and tossed it beside the overflowing garbage can. He ran his fingers through his silver blue hair and sighed. How was he going to tell her without it sounding like some lame excuse?

It had been six months since he had abandoned Amara at the ball celebrating her team's win in a Canadian tournament. He hadn't known how to tell her so he left a note; actually it was a piece of paper with the word sorry on it, with one of the bellhops before catching the next plane to Russia. The whole ride there all Kai could think about was how right it felt when he was kissing her minutes before he deserted her for what would probably turn out to be forever.

"Excuse me Master Kai," a shy maid peeked her head into his bedroom.

"What is it?" Kai asked impatiently.

"Sorry to interrupt you but your grandfather would be liken' a word with yas," she mumbled looking at the floor.

"Tell him I'll be down in a minute," he huffed, turning back to his notepad.

"Beggin your pardon sir but he wishes to see you immediately," she said quietly.

"Fine," Kai snapped, but regretted taking his anger out on her. "I'm sorry, I'm not angry with you."

The maid brought her eyes up to stare in shock at her young master. The master of the house had never said sorry for his rudeness and now his grandson was being polite? It was rather startling.

"Where is he?" Kai asked, ignoring the look she gave him.

            "In his study."

She moved aside as Kai brushed past her into the hallway.

"Ah there you are my boy," Kai's grandfather, Voltaire, greeted him warmly. Kai gave him a skeptical look. Was he seeing things or was his grandfather smiling?

"What do you want?" Kai snapped, glaring at him.

"Kai, is that the way you talk when we have guests?" he motioned to the woman and man sitting in the armchairs across from his desk. "My deepest apologies for my grandson's rudeness, madam."

"It's alright, he's young," The lady nodded to Kai.

"Kai allow me to introduce your great grandmother," His grandfather swelled with pride.

"It's a honor to meet you," Kai bowed.

"The same to you," she smiled at him. "Have a seat Kai."

She gestured to the chair that her bodyguard had recently vacated and Kai sat down.

"We have a lot to go over and not a lot of time," she began her eyes the same unique steel gray as Kai's. "There have been certain things kept from you because you were so young but now I feel you are ready to know the truth."

~*~*~ Thousands of Miles Away @ Amara's Mansion ~*~*~

            BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEP!

            SLAM!

Amara Jones opened her eyes and groaned. 6: 30 am. It took her a minute to remember why she had set her alarm so early on a Saturday.

"Miss you better get up if you want to get to the airport in time," her butler Jackson knocked on her door.

"I am," Amara whined, throwing back her heavy comforter. "I don't need breakfast, I'll stop at McDonald's on the way. But make sure the car is waiting out front."

She quickly dressed in army green cargo pants, a brown long sleeved shirt with a pink t-shirt over top (Cat was starting to rub off on her), and then proceeded to put her long red hair into two messy buns on the top of her head. Cat had managed to convince her to try new colors but she wasn't going to mess with a good hairstyle.

"Let's go Ams," this time it was Cat calling through the closed door.

Cat had moved in with Amara after her father lost his memory.

"One sec," Amara called back grabbing black leather jacket. She opened the door to find Cat standing there waiting with her arms crossed. As always she was in head to toe pink except for the black zip up hoody she carried in her arms.

"We don't want to be late," Cat smirked and turned back down the hallway to the stairs.

"Yeah but who knows they might have missed the flight because of Tyson," Amara chuckled, walking side by side with Cat down the stairs. "They had to hold the plane for three hours when they were coming home for Christmas."

 Both girls burst out laughing.

"What's so funny?" Nicholai asked raising an eyebrow. He was waiting for them by the front door.

"Nothing," Cat kissed him on the cheek and took his hand in hers.

"Let's get going," Amara opened the door for the couple.

"Aww come on girls you can't not tell me," Nicholai pouted.

"We can and we will," Cat chuckled, getting into the black SUV.

~*~*~*~ Back in Russia ~*~*~*~

"You f***ing kidding me right?!?" Kai exclaimed, looking from his grandfather to his great grandmother.

"Watch your mouth boy," Voltaire snapped.

"It's alright," his great grandmother brushed him off. "I do recall another young man with an even worse potty mouth." She wagged her finger at him. "And no Kai we are not f***ing kidding you." Kai stared at the older woman. Had she really just swore?"

"But …I…" Kai stuttered, not knowing what else to say. "What if I don't want to?"

"Well you're going to and that's final," Kai's grandfather snapped.

"Get out!" Kai turned in shock to the shrieking old woman. "I want to finish this alone with the boy."

Scowling he left the room and slammed the door behind him like a pouting child.

"Now Kai," she turned back to him, smiling sweetly. "I don't want to force you into anything and I know it's a lot to grasp but it's in your blood."

"But why me?"

"Well, which reason do you want?" she asked politely, taking a sip from the water glass beside her.

"The truth." She nodded and put the cup back down.

"The truth is it's your destiny." Kai nodded solemnly. "And everyone else in this family are a bunch of bastards."

~*~*~*~ Vancouver Airport~*~*~*~

"KIKI!" Amara screamed and ran across the airport entrance to embrace her friend.

"About time you showed up," Kiki smiled and hugged her back.

"We would have been here sooner but someone insisted that we stop off at McDonald's," Cat smirked, walking up to the group, hand in hand wit Nicholai.

"Aw why couldn't you guys wait till after you picked us up," Tyson whimpered. "I haven't eaten in hours."

"You rotten liar," Kiki smacked him in the arm. "You just ate mine and your food on the plane."

"Well it wasn't enough," he whined, giving her a puppy dog pout. Kiki smiled and planted a kiss on his pouting lips, which extinguished the sad look.

"I'm sure Jackson will give you a large lunch when we get home," Mr. Dickinson added, trying to lead the group of teens out of the airport.

"Mico, Kiki, and Cat are with me," Amara said once they were outside in the parking lot.

"How can they? You only have one other seat," Kenny asked, a little reluctant to let go of his girlfriend.

"Not anymore," she laughed. Parked in front of her black SUV was an indigo Celica.

"You got your drivers license?" Kiki shrieked. Amara nodded. "That's awesome!" Kiki hugged her again. The others offered their congrats and then boarded the black SUV before heading back to Amara's house.

"I love pizza," Tyson sighed happily, laying back into the couch rubbing his full stomach. Once they had gotten back to Amara's house, Jackson had pizza waiting for them in the rec room.

"You ate a whole pizza by yourself," Cat gawked. "How do you stay so thin?"

            "Don't know," Tyson grinned thoughtfully.

"All you guys eat so much and still stay the same weight," Mico pointed out.

"That's so not fair," Cat pouted.

"Well Rei's the only one that doesn't eat as much as the rest of you," Kenny told them, biting into his fifth piece.

"Where is Rei?" Nicholai asked, shifting in his seat so Cat was leaning into him.

"He said something about getting something from his room," Max shrugged from his place on the floor. Him and Tyson had turned on the PS2 and were about to begin another long battle at Mortal Kombat.

"That was like half an hour ago," said Kiki.

"Maybe I'll go see what he's up to," Amara said, getting up from the couch. "I was going to go up there to get some pictures I wanted to show you guys."

Everyone who was listening nodded and Amara left the room. Rei was staying alone in the room that he and Kai had shared the summer before.

"Rei?" Amara peered through the partially opened door. She couldn't see him but her eyes were drawn to the glowing laptop screen sitting on the desk. A window was open to what looked like his email account. Normally Amara wouldn't have been nosy enough to read someone else's personal email but the return address of the letter intrigued her more than a little.
