Chapter 4

Yoko Kurama and Kitori

Raven lay on her bed, staring at her ceiling. She wasn't sure how she felt. She had used the rebirthing technique in hopes to find her half- brother those seventeen years ago. She'd been waiting for her chance all this time only to learn that her brother had been killed despite her valiant efforts to save his sorry carcass. "Kuronue, you jerk," she whispered half-heartedly as tears strolled down her face. "You know I could reincarnate myself. Why did you let yourself get killed?"

A knock sounded at her door. "Come in," she said, sitting up and looking in that direction. Yukina's head appeared at the door.

"Kurama is here to see you," she said. The red headed demons head popped up behind Yukina's.

"Come in Kurama, "Raven invited. "Thank you, Yukina, she added. The girl smiled and left, leaving the door open a little.

Raven and Kurama sat in silence for a while, each thinking their own thoughts. Raven was trying to decide which question she should ask first and Kurama was attempting to think of a way to bring the subject up tactfully. Raven broke the silence by asking bluntly, "What happened to Kuronue? Is he truly dead or did he reincarnate himself?"

Kurama sighed, "I'm not sure," he admitted. "As far as I know, he's truly dead. I personally haven't heard of an extraordinary thief, but then again, I know little of what's happening outside of Japan."

"I guess that makes sense," Raven murmured.

"What have you been doing with yourself for the past sixteen years?" Kurama inquired. "Anything interesting?"

"Not really," Raven replied. "You can't do much as a human child or teenager with parents that are slightly over protective, even by human standards."

"I know the feeling," Kurama sympathized. "I often lit my more demonic half roam freely long before he must."

The girl smiled at this. Topics ranged from school, to work, to childhood adventures, and finally family as the talked quietly, catching up on old times.

Kurama, after answering questions about his small ningen family started inquiring of Raven's. "What happened to your parents?" He finally asked, remembering what she had said at school.

"Well, I don't know about my real parents," Raven responded, "but the people that adopted me were really nice. They were murdered a week before I came here." A shadow of sorrow passed behind her eyes, but was quickly banished.

"I'm sorry," Kurama murmured as he laid a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't be," Raven growled coldly as she stood up and moved towards her window, "you didn't kill them. It wasn't your fault." A bitter smile crossed her features. "I'm just angry at the police, I guess," she confided to the taller boy. "They aren't going to do a blasted thing. It's like they were meant to be killed.' A "pop" sounded at this and a teenaged boy with brown hair and blue eyes with a pacifier (of all things) sticking out of his mouth appeared.

"They were meant to die," he said as if commenting on the weather.

"Who are you? And how dare you say that?!" Raven cried as she struggled to suppress her fear at the youth's sudden arrival.

"Raven," Kurama said, taking the teenagers queue, "this is Koenma Daohoi, Prince, and Ruler of Rekai."

"And I dare say that because I controlled your parents' fate." Koenma informed Raven. "Besides," he added, "I need you in Japan, near your grandmother, where I can keep an eye on you."

"You mean where Yusuke, Kuwabara, Botan, Hiei, Ryouki, or I can keep an eye on her," Kurama whispered under his breath.

"Be quiet or I'll send you back to prison!" The ruler threatened.

"Shutting up."

"It's the same idea anyway," he continued, turning back to Raven.

"Why would you want to watch me, of all people?" Raven inquired. She was a little nervous around the prince considering he could convict her for her crimes in an eye blink. "I'm not that important."

"Not important?" Koenma scoffed. "My dear Raven, or should I say Kitori?" the girl blanched visibly, "You are extremely important to us in the Spirit World. We need you close to my best Rekai Tentais so that you can have the best protection."

"Okay, stop," Raven commanded, "how did you know who I was? How many demons know who I am? And how many want my head served up on a silver platter?"

"Not you r head precisely but what's inside it."

"I don't understand."

"It's quite simple. You know, or knew, of every hole in the barriers between the three worlds. You can sense where one will open and when it will, and you know every single hidden tunnel, trail, path, entrance, exit, and the best hiding places in the Makia, Rekai, and Ningenkai."

"What else don't I know about you?" Kurama demanded in astonishment after Koenma had finished.

"You'd be surprised," Raven smirked.

"That's not the pint," Koenma interrupted, "the point is that you and your knowledge are in great danger. Kurama, I suggest you tell the others of your new assignment. Hiei will probably be the best choice to be her guardian, so to speak. Please inform him." With that, another "pop" sounded and Koenma was gone.

"Great and wonderful," sarcasm dripped from Raven's voice, "why do I get the feeling he didn't tell me everything?"

"I'm fairly certain he didn't," Kurama commented. "He rarely remembers all points to a mission. Either that or he just chooses not to tell the more important details."

"Brilliant," Raven grumbled, "What was he talking about when he said Hiei would be the best choice to be my guardian?"

"You're not going to like this," the youkai-kitsune rubbed his forehead. "Koenma has just appointed Hiei to be your body-guard. Hiei won't bed too happy either, come to think of it."

"I was afraid you were going to say that."

"I'm sorry," Kurama told his long-time friend earnestly. He glanced at his watch. "Oh, dear," he muttered. "I'm late. Mother won't be happy. I must go, but I shall see you tomorrow, my good friend."

"Of course, but," Raven stopped him, "would you do me a favor?" Kurama watched her quizzically. "Could I see Yoko Kurama? Just this once?"

"Only if I may see Kitori."

"Deal," the girl said. She released her demonic side a moment later and pain quickly sot through her bones. When the pain finally stopped after thirty agonizing seconds, Kitori stood in front of her old partner's human form. Black, bat-like wings shifted slightly on her shoulders. No longer five feet and ten inches tall, she now reached a height of four feet and nine inches. Black hair had acquired streaks of copper and her once green eyes were shown as dark sapphire depths. Like her half brother's ears, her own came to a point at the tips. Her teeth had lengthened into fangs and her hands were now claw-like. Her school uniform was gone. Instead, she wore black boots that reached halfway up her shins, black pants that were tucked into the footwear, and an old-fashioned red shirt and a black coat, caped at the shoulders and reached mid-thigh with a silver falcon embroidered on the left shoulder finished the ensemble. Her dark hair was kept out of her face by a red piece of clothe that was embroidered with greens and blues. "Alright," her voice was soft, an alto, with a hint of wind-rustled leaves in it, "I've kept up my end of the deal, now keep yours."

"As you wish," Kurama's demonic side put up a larger display of power as lightning flashed and the air in the room grew thick. His ears shifted to the top of his head and changed to that of a fox. His hear turned silver and he became taller, around seven feet tall before he stopped. Gold eyes took over the green depths of before. A silver tail appeared as his teeth sharpened and lengthened. Hands changed to claws as his clothes changed to those of Yoko Kurama.

"Show off as always," Kitori muttered, dodging another dark lightning bolt.

"What's the use of having power if you can't make a display of it?"

"You just ask for trouble, don't you?"

"Yes, I do. However, my better half is gaining control again. I must go." He cupped Kitori's cheek in one of his hands. "I've missed you Kit. I'll see you again soon." He bent and gave the shorter demon a kiss on the cheek.

"Until we meet again," Kitori said as Raven and Shuuichi retook control.

"That was interesting," Kurama muttered. "Well, I must leave. Good- bye Kit." He repeated the Yoko's actions and left the girl watching his departure.

Vannen: Well, that's it. Hope you all enjoyed. Oh, and one more thing. I need a female character. I want height, hair color, eye color, personality, clothing style, race (demon, human, mix, etc.), who you want her to be paired with (if at all. Can't be Kurama, Hiei, or Shishi. No yaoi) and anything else I forgot. If I don't use yours, don't take it personally please. It could be someone else's was better than yours was, either that, or I just didn't like yours. In any case, review. Thanks.

Hiei: Give her one or she'll continue to torture us.

Vannen: Don't make me hurt you.

Hiei: Shutting up.

Vannen: Later all!
