"Are you okay?" Cordy asked.

"I'm...."

"I love this song," Cordy said, but she turned the radio down instead of up and glanced over at Buffy.

The Slayer was staring out the window, a lost expression on her face. It made Cordelia shiver-she wasn't used to seeing Buffy like this. In fact, she'd never seen Buffy like this.

"Buffy?"

"Huh? What?"

"What's wrong?" Cordy turned the radio completely off and purposely took a wrong turn on Dayton so that she and Buffy could talk. "You look sort of upset."

"It's nothing," Buffy muttered.

"You can talk to me, you know," Cordy added. "I'll really listen, not just pretend."

Had Buffy been herself at that moment, she would've smiled. Instead, she looked at her and said, "I can't."

"I'd say I understand that, but I don't. At all. And you know me and speaking my mind. But, about whatever Giles did-"

"Don't," Buffy ordered.

"Don't what?"

"Don't say his name."

"Ever?" Cordy asked. "Should I just call him the librarian then?"

"Could we....I really need you to.."

"Be quiet?" Cordy guessed. "I'm kind of used to that."

"Kill him," Buffy finished.

"Gi-I mean, the librarian? I don't think I can. I'd have you do it, but Slayers aren't supposed to kill people."

"Not him, the vampire."

"What vampire?" Cordy was getting confused. "Is there only one left? Sunnydale is safe now?"

"There's this vampire..." Buffy didn't know how to put this. "He's out to kill me."

"Well, you're the Slayer. He'll be dust before you can repair that smeared lipstick and shop for a new concealer," Cordy said brightly.

"I'm tired," Buffy leaned back against the car seat. "I'm so tired. I don't know if I can fight."

"You can," Cordy said sincerely. "You have to."

"I do?"

"Duh. No one else can."

"Thanks, Cordelia," Buffy said quietly.

"Were not at your house yet," Cordy pointed out.

"I wasn't thanking you for the ride home."

"Oh. Well. Okay. You're welcome."

The rest of the drive was silent, and when Cordelia dropped Buffy off at her house, she was slightly afraid to leave her alone.

"You seem a little off," Cordy admitted, "I could stay with you, if you want. Your mom could cook and-"

"No, that's okay. Really," Buffy insisted. "I'll be okay. Thanks, Cordelia."

"Happy birthday," Cordy added as she shut the door.

"Thanks."

Cordelia watched Buffy enter the house, then she sped off into the night, looking for a place that would still be open and carry Ben & Jerry's at ten p.m.
