Author's note: A tiny little Faramir/Eowyn story. Review please, and I will love you forever. And of course I own neither Faramir (sob) nor Eowyn.

A Question

"My lord?" said a soft voice. The figure of a woman took a step into the dark room and repeated hesitantly, "Lord Faramir?"

The man in question blearily sat up in his bed and squinted at the figure in the doorway. "Eowyn?" he asked a bit sleepily.

Dropping into a curtsy, Eowyn said, "I'm sorry for waking you, my lord, but the warden said you'd be leaving today, and I…I had to ask you something."

"It must be important if you're willing to face me in naught but my underthings," Faramir commented with a wry smile.

Eowyn ducked her head, but then said in an amused tone, "It would seem that you're eager for me to see you in that state, the way you carry on about marriage."

The remark elicited a chuckle from Faramir. "Forgive me, Lady, if I've been indecent to you. Now, what is it you wanted to ask me?"

She came closer to the bed and drew a breath. "Could you still love me knowing that…" She paused, thought, and finished, "…knowing that I had pledged my love to others?"

Faramir raised his eyebrows. "You're speaking of Aragorn?"

Hesitating, Eowyn said, "There was one other. When I was a girl. He made many promises that he couldn't keep, and I had no mother or father to warn me of the dangers of boys who profess their undying love." She looked down at her feet. "I wouldn't feel right not telling you, but if it is something that changes your feelings, then you had best tell me now." With this last statement, her voice took on the beginnings of a defiant edge.

Faramir just stared at her for several moments. "My lady, you must forgive me again, for I am about to do something improper." With those words, he put his arms around her waist and pulled her onto his lap.

"Faramir!" she exclaimed, though she didn't move and also seemed rather captivated by the way he was gazing at her.

He gently touched her face. "Do you love me now, Eowyn?"

Smiling shyly, she said, "With all my heart."

"That's all I need to know," Faramir said, affection apparent in his voice. "We're all fools when we're young. Myself included, if you can believe it."

Unexpectedly, she threw her arms around him and murmured into his neck, "Either I've learned nothing, or you're every bit as wonderful as I thought."

"I hope it's the latter," Faramir replied quietly, holding her close and stroking her hair. "Though I don't understand why you think so."

Eowyn drew back and looked at him fondly. Instead of answering, she said, "I'd better let you sleep, since I so rudely woke you."

He caught her arm and kissed her swiftly. "For the sake of propriety, I shall let you go, since soon I won't have to."

She just smiled and left the room, softly shutting the door behind her.
