My heart slowing from its frantic pace, my breathing harsh and loud, I
watch Draco Malfoy. I watch how he leans casually against a battlement, one
long leg dangling in the air 50 feet above the Hogwarts grounds, the other
stretched out in front of him.
His head is bowed, his bangs falling forward to conceal his eyes.
Slowly, my breath is quieted and I watch him silently as he silently sat there.
He didn't move for so long that I thought he had fallen asleep. I stepped forward with the intention of waking him up, but I had barely took 3 steps when he turned to look at me and spoke, with a slight smile on his face,"Can you fly, Potter?"
Taken aback, I stop, and the silence stretches between us again.
"Er...yeah, I think I fly pretty well, and it doesn't hurt that I have a Firebolt-"
"No." He interrupted, his cool tones effectively cutting through,"Can you fly? Can you be free with nothing to hold you back, nothing to care for?" His expression didn't change, nor did his voice, yet I sensed a deep urgency in his sentence.
Mutely, I shake my head.
He turned around and stood up then, standing quietly on the edge, balancing gracefully as the moon shone upon his face. I couldn't see his face anymore and I felt strangely saddened. The Slytherin continued stared at the stars intently, as if they somehow held the answer to all his questions.
Smiling he turned around again to face me, stretching his arms out to the side.
Shadowed and glimmering in the air, I saw a faint impression of-what? No, impossible. I closed my eyes-
"Guess what, Potter? I'm going to fly." -then opened them, eyes widening behind my glasses, realizing that demons can't have wings.
With that quiet smile of joy still upon his face, he tilted his head backwards, and let himself fall.
I ran as quickly to the edge as I could, feeling my legs were moving too slow, far too slow.
Draco's eyes were closed, a small grin still on his face, as he fell fell fell away from me...
His hand! It was still there, it wasn't too far yet! Reaching out, I grabbed his hand, trying to pull him back up, to defy gravity.
His eyes flew open, grey eyes wide with surprise.
Gravity was not to be defied.
Draco's hand, clenched in mine, pulled me down with him and I free-falled into the sky, my glasses falling off my nose, my wand tipping out of my pocket.
My, our, last hope was gone.
Draco watched it go with dulled eyes, his face resigned, whispering in so soft a voice I almost didn't even hear it, the words falling upon panic- deafened ears.
"In my life, I bring pain. In my death, I bring pain." he sighed and closed his eyes,"I'm sorry Harry, I'm sorry."
