A/N: Thank you so much for your reviews. I don't know why, but I can't see who reviewed this story on ff, but I get email alerts so thank you very much. I`ve been asked if this story is an upstead or a linstead story, and this is upstead. However, I want to include Erin in this tory but not in a way that will ruin her character and not make her likeable. Please let me know if there is anything on your mind and I am sorry for any language error. I am from Norway and everyone here either sucks or does not know English so I am sorry.

TW: I wanted to have a trigger warning. This story will eventually mention sexual assault and depression so if you get triggered by that I wouldn`t read this story.

Btw the names of the OC characters are just random. I have no name imagination so if a name sounds familiar it's probably why. This story is from now on set in 2025, 5 years later. I will be time - jumping through this story, so I hope it won't be hard to understand. If it is then let me know and I will change it up. I hope you enjoy.

2022 - Boston, Massachusetts

"Hello"

"Hello. I am Karen Roe calling from Massachusetts general hospital. Is this Trudy Platt?"

"Yes it is. What can I help you with?" She heard the person taking a big breath before she said the most surprising thing.

"I am calling on behalf of Hailey Upton. It says that you are listed as her emergency contact."

4 years later - Boston, Massachusetts

Sergeant Jay Halstead was headed back to his hotel room. The intelligence unit had helped Boston PD out on a drug case. He had been here once for a funeral for one of his buddies in the army, but he never had any time to explore. His phone binged and he grabbed his phone to look at the message, but his actions were soon interrupted by a familiar sound. An old way too familiar laugher. The one that he hears in his dreams. He looked up to see the blonde ponytail heading into the cafe. He didn't see a face, but he knew it was real.

Sleep didn't come that easy to Jay Halstead. He would sometimes lie awake and think about her eyes, face and hair. How stunning she always looked. It had been five years since he had seen her. He blamed himself for not fighting for her. For walking out. He understood why she chose to go undercover, but it had been five years and she hadn't been back. He knew that her undercover job was over. Hank had told the team that Hailey had sent him a letter of resignation, and that was it. She was gone, and she hadn't bothered to keep in touch with anyone.

After Hailey left the CPD, Voight brought in a new detective. He was glad that he took in someone that had been on the job for a long time and not a rookie. Detective Nicholas Williams, a homicide detective and even served in the Navy. They started out a little rough because he simply wasn`t Hailey, but after learning he served and finding out they had some things in common they had become close friends. He thought he would break after Hailey, but Nick had his back and helped him.

The team alongside with Boston PD finished the case, and they had a day off before they had to go back to Chicago. The day had been used for sightseeing, relaxing and shopping for the girls and they were at a local bar celebrating with the officers from Boston. He was for the first time in a very long time enjoying life. He looks around happy until he spots what he never ever expected to see again.

She looks happy talking to her friends. He smiles at the sight of her. She hasn't changed very much and she still looks like til same Hailey. He notices how her eyes keep moving around the room then she stops. They share a moment and he can`t forget the way she looks at him. She turns back to the people she is with and never looks back at him. A while later he notices that she stands up and says goodbye. Jay was not sure if it was a good idea but he did it anyway.

Hailey hates walking alone in the dark. The last five years she tried to deal with it, but sometimes she would feel like someone would come behind her again. The footsteps behind her are enough to scare her. Instinctively she walks faster and almost runs.

"Hailey" his voice is so soft and pleading. She would recognize it anywhere. She stops and turns around looking in his eyes.

"Hi" she is so shy to the point where it's almost embarrassing. She never expected to see him again, especially after five years.

"What are you doing here?" she asks him.

"We have been working on a case with Boston PD the last week. Just wrapped it up and are heading home tomorrow" he wants to reach out to her, but the voice in the back of his mind tells him not to do it. "It's been five years" he states sadly.

Her face falls when he says it. She missed him and talking to him made it more clear.

"I missed you"

2020 - Boston, Massachusetts:

Stepping back into the life of an undercover agent was familiar. She had spent a lot of her cop years working as an undercover agent until she was meritoriously promoted to detective. She did a few undercover operations, but she hadn't been deep undercover in a while.

She missed home. She missed being with Jay, but she couldn't keep living there. She had been offered the undercover gig a while ago, but she didn`even think twice about taking it. Then when she saw Erin standing in his apartment and she knew that she couldn't tell him how she felt. She didn't know why, but something in her heart told her not to go through with it.

Riley Jenkins was a local bartender from Virginia. Her father was a businessman and her mother a dentist. Hailey had been sent undercover to pose as Riley and get close to Carlos Hernandez. A big-time drug distributor who is suspected to be funded by a terrorist organization. This case was handled by the DEA, FBI AND the CIA. Hailey had no idea what she was getting herself into but she knew that since she had been approached more than once she was more than capable.

2025:

They`re sitting on a park bench a couple of blocks from the bar. They are silent, but surprisingly it isn't awkward.

Jay finally breaks the silent. "So how are you? Boston`s nice." he tried to not sound as bitter as he was. She was here all along and he didn't know.

"I am good. Boston`s nice, yeah, but it's not Chicago."

"It most definitely isn't Chicago" he chuckled. "When did you come back?" He can feel the tension after he asks her. He wasn't sure what it was, but something was bothering her.

"Three years ago." she does not say anything more which upsets him. He knows he shouldn't push, but he can feel his blood boiling.

"Three years" he states as a fact. "You never called"

She sighs and she almost snaps. "I couldn`t Jay. I couldn't do that, I am sorry"

"Why? what was so bad that you couldn't even say 'Hey, Jay. I am alive and living in Boston'" He noticed how she was almost on the verge of tears and stopped. "I am sorry" he closed his eyes and took a big breath.

"How is everyone?" she leans her head back.

"Good. After you left we were struggling, but we all healed I guess. A new detective joined, his name is Nick. He served in the navy so we`ve been dumping our problems out on each other. He's helped me a lot, but he could never be you.

He says it so sincerely that she has to stop herself from breaking down. So many times she wanted to call, but she never could do it.

"That`s good. I am happy for you" she gives him one of her signature smiles that could take away all the problems in the world. "I heard about your promotion. I feel bad for Voight, but I couldn't imagine anyone better at running the unit."

He was surprised about how she knew. "How did you know? You never kept in touch, or did you?" Had Vanessa lied about being in touch with her?

"No, Vanessa and I haven't talked in five years. I work at the DEA and one of the agents in my unit is from Chicago, and so let's just say she is not the biggest fan of Hank Voight." she chuckled. Hillary had given her a little hard time since she was from intelligence, but they had later become friends.

He didn't tell Jay the real reason how she found out, Yes, Hillary had told her, but she already knew and he didn't need to know that she did keep in touch with Trudy and Hank.

"Ah i see" he leaned back and chuckled. "Hank Voight is definitely not everyone's favorite"

"The DEA? That's impressive."

"Yeah, after I got back undercover I was offered the job and after a while I decided to take it"

"I get it. I am happy for you, and I am happy that we met again. Are you seeing anyone?"

It felt a little inappropriate, but he was curious, and he had hope that she would say no.

"Actually, I am" disappointment flashed over his face. "His name is Andrew. he's an attorney. I met him while working a case. We`ve been seeing each other for a few weeks. What about you?"

"There was one girl, but she wasn't you" After he says it their eyes lock. He notices a strand of hair on her face and pulls it behind her ear instinctevely. His hand lingers on the side of her face, and she takes a breath to focus on not shattering right there.

He realizes the moment, and he turns away and takes her hand of her face and stands up.

"It's late and I have an early flight tomorrow. I should go."

Hailey agreed but she didn't want to. "That's probably a good idea. It was good seeing you again." she reached up and put her arms around his neck while he reached for her waist. He smelled her hair and held on for as long as he could. He didn't want to let her go.

"Bye jay"

"Bye Hailey, take care of yourself"

2022: Boston, Massachusetts:

"Hello mam. What can I help you with?" a young woman says smiling.

"Hello, my name is Trudy Platt. I was called by a Karen Roe about a Hailey Upton"

The woman nodded and to Trudy it seemed like she was familiar with the name

"Yes, It seems that doctor Avery is working the case. I will page here right away. You can sit there" she motioned to the waiting area behind me.

A few minutes later a woman in her 40s went to the reception lady who motioned towards Trudy. She walked up to her. "Trudy Platt? I am doctor Lisa Avery, head of trauma surgery" she reaches out her hand which Trudy gladly accepts.

"Detective Upton was found in an abandoned warehouse. When she got here we found a bleeding in her abdomen and she suffered from broken ribs that punctured one of her lungs. She got out of surgery a few hours ago and we just started reducing the sedatives. She is going to recover fine physically, but we have reason to believe that detective Upton was sexually assaulted."
