After arriving in Denver, Shane McInerney goes to Washington Park. This short fanfiction is inspired by the end of the pilot. The characters belong to the talented Martha Williamson.
"I'm glad Shane is staying with us." Rita exclaimed after Shane left the office.
"Yeah, she's nice. Now, we're gonna be a quartet". Norman exclaimed as he put away a box.
"And what do you think, Oliver?" Rita asked.
" Hum.. Interesting... Oh, I'll meet you there, like we planned.I'm sure she must be there too." Oliver said before leaving.
"Who's what over there?" Norman asked
Shane McInerney was walking down the aisles of Washington Park. She was really starting to enjoy that park. Shane walked to the bridge, where Kelly had meet Charlie in her letter. She hadn't imagined that a simple letter could touch her at this point and make her like Washington Park so much. She smiled as she was looking above the bridge, thinking of Kelly's reunion with Charlie, but she didn't see the person next to her.
"The bridge of hope and love. A lot of people enjoy that bridge." Oliver exclaimed.
Oliver was leaning against the bridge, smiling.
" Oliver? But how did you know I was here?" Shane asked, surprised.
"I was sure I'd find you here. It wasn't complicated. I guess you're starting to like it here and the letter we solved really touched you." Oliver replied.
"Wow, you're strong. That's exactly right." Shane laughed.
"So Miss McInerney, I guess you've changed your mind about the Dead Letter Office. Isn't it just a job?" Oliver asked with a little smile.
"No, it's not. I'm really starting to get a taste for it." Shane replied.
"That's great. If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets so well, that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say 'here lived a great sweeper who did his job well.'" Martin Luther King said that. You have just to put your heart in your work, Miss McInerney. And you did it perfect well for your first week with us, the team". Oliver added.
Shane wiped away a tear.
" Let me show you the best place in Washington Park in the summer." Oliver said, smilling.
Oliver and Shane walked for a few minutes while admiring the many green spaces.
When they arrived, Norman and Rita were seated at a table with ice cream cups.
"Wow! We're celebrating something special !" Shane exclaimed.
"And this is for you... Mango ice cream with passion fruit and grated coconut." Oliver said as he handed Shane an ice cream cup.
"This is the best gelato in all of Denver. The ice-cream maker puts his heart into every ice cream he makes." Norman said.
"It's why, we like eat ice crem here." Rita added.
"That's very sweet. But you still haven't told me what we're celebrating today?" Shane asked again.
Oliver, Norman and Rita looked at each other and then smiled at Shane as they raised their cup of ice cream.
"Shane, welcome, Shane!" Oliver, Norman and Rita exclaimed.
Shane was very touched and didn't know what to say.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart, to all of you." Shane, said, smiling, trying to hold back her tears.
"Actually, it was Oliver's idea. We wanted celebrate your arrival in the DLO. Shane, we're all very happy you're staying with us." Rita declared.
"Yeah, I am, too. I'm very hungry. Why don't we eat now?" Norman asked
"Norman!" Rita laughed.
Smiling, Shane walked towards Oliver.
"Thank you very much, Oliver. That was a beautiful surprise. If that this place you're talking about, it was wonderful." Shane remarked.
"Oh, yes, my pleasure, but I didn't lie when I said, there was the most beautiful place in Washington Park... ...all you have to do is turn around." Oliver said softly.
Shane turned around and saw the pretty little lake and especially the beautiful sunset.
She didn't hesitate for a second to sit down and contemplate the scenery. Oliver sat down in turn.
"Wow! I love watching sunsets. But the one in Washington Park is even more beautiful. Do you come here every day?" Shane asked.
"Not every day. But, it's in the simple moments, like now, that you create beautiful memories." Oliver said with a smile.
"Well, in that case, I hope to see a lot of sunsets in Washington Park." Shane added.
"Me too, Miss McInerney, me too." Oliver, said with a smile, looking at the horizon.
The end.
