…
"Ooh… I shouldn't have stayed up until 3 am…" was the first thing to go through my head, as I came to. As I opened my eyes, I realized I was on the bathroom floor. "How embarrassing, I fell asleep in the bathroom!" I must've been typing on my phone, honestly.. that's probably not healthy. I saw my phone in front of my eyes, and I went to grab it, but… I couldn't reach it. That's when I noticed the red fur. 'What!? What's wrong with my arm?!' I was very confused at what I was seeing. I moved what should've been my arm and the red one followed suit, which was surprising. I looked a bit harder, noticing that my hand wasn't a hand anymore, but a paw, a 3 fingered paw. My thumbs and pinky fingers were absent.
I tried moving my legs, and found it impossible to stand upright on them. I found out I was completely covered in reddish orange fur from head to toe. After several attempts, I managed to stand on both my arms and legs.
'What the hell am I? A dog?' I wasn't even taller than the counter. I moved over to my phone, I'm lucky I didn't have a password, or else it Would be harder to get on my phone. And.. It was on 13% battery… I don't have much time.. speaking of time..
It was 10:48 AM. So I got 8 hours of sleep at least.. maybe I'm just still dreaming? I noticed something behind me in my reflection from the phone screen as I looked down upon it. A tall, cream colored object was visible just behind me. I spun around, trying to see what it was that was there but it kept on staying just in the corner of my vision. Then, it hit me. I had a tail: a long, bushy tail protruding from the base of my spine. Dread crept over me like settling dust. I couldn't go out in public looking like this, it would be ridiculous. Nobody would take me seriously anymore. My thoughts then drifted to my family. Has anything like this happened to them? I wobbled over to the bathroom door and began scratching at the door as I could no longer reach the doorknob, or turn it for that matter.
What can I do now? How am I supposed to open the door? I wasn't sure, so I just scratched at it as if I were a dog asking to be let outside. 'Mom! Mom, dad! Can you hear me? I can't get out of here.' I heard footsteps rapidly approaching the bathroom door. I was flung open and my mother was standing there, a horrified look on her face. 'Mom, what's wrong?' She just stared at me.
'Get out.' Those words sent a chill down my spine.
'Mom, what do you mean?'
'Get out you freak.' Her words were dripping with malice. 'You aren't my daughter. You're just a monster.' I didn't understand what she meant by this, how wasn't I her daughter. Was she saying my memories were false? That couldn't be it, right? Before I could ask what she meant, she had picked me up by the scruff of my neck and was carrying me towards the front door.
'Mom! Mom! What are you doing? Let me go!' I screamed, but she just ignored me. She reached the front door, and just tossed me out. She didn't put me on the floor, she literally threw me out of the house. 'Mom!'
'I told you.' Not even a hint of compassion was in her voice. 'You're just a freak.' With that, she slammed and locked the door, trapping me outside. I didn't know what to do anymore, so I just ran. I took off and ran down the road, tears streaming down my face. My brain registered a golden Nissan skyline drive past me towards my house. Somehow, the sight of my dad and his car strengthened my resolve to run as I was sure he'd hate me now like my mother did, so I carried on running and my tears fell like a waterfall but never even hit the floor as they evaporated due to my body heat. As I headed down the street, things quickly descended into chaos. The first sign that something was wrong was a burning wreckage wrapping around a lamppost. A man had barely made it out of the passenger side of the vehicle before succumbing to his injuries. Further down the road, a child was crying as a large, kangaroo-like creature attempted to calm them down with basic phrases such as 'Its okay sweetie.' Or 'Don't worry, mommy's here.'
As I carried on away from my house, the scene only got worse. As I crossed the Delaware, I noticed a school bus full of children balancing precariously on the edge. I watched, helpless as it slowly tipped and fell off. The terrified faces of the children and creatures inside desperately hammering on the windows to try and escape, but to no avail. Helplessly watching, I saw the murky water slowly envelop the bus and the silent screams of the children were no more.
'Why..is this happening?... all of this destruction… and pain… it's not fair..' I was all alone, helpless and unable to do anything as my world came crashing down. I just laid down, sobbing to myself. 'Why… why did this happen to me?... I've become this stupid red dog…' I continued to cry to myself on the bridge. What can I even do? I heard something, a car driving and then stopping near me. I twisted my head to see my father. 'no.. he must be here to finish me off… please… be quick..'
He opened the car door, stepping out and going towards me. 'June?.. is that you? If you are, you're still my child and I will never abandon you. Please come back'
He looked at me, before looking away and towards his car. 'Wait.. he still loves me?' I thought .
'Wait!' I yelled as I ran up to him, my legs going as fast as they could go. I wasn't sure of what to do, and out of fear of abandonment, I desperately clung to his leg. For a moment, my dad looked confused as if he didn't know what to make of the situation. Then, I noticed he'd started to weep.
'It is you June, isn't it. I was so worried about you.' The raw emotion in my father's voice reassured me. 'Come on, I'll get you home.' His tone then changed to more menacing. 'Then I'll have a little chat with my darling wife about what just happened.'
The ride home was uneventful and took only a few minutes. My father did stop to say something at a red light. 'I have no understanding of what happened. I was teaching in my classroom when about 3 of my students starting feeling Ill. Then they started to shake violently on the floor as they began to.. I don't ever know... transform, were you up when this happened? I'm so sorry…' he almost began to tear up. 'No, I wasn't' I shook my head. He seemed to understand. 'Oh that's good.. I'm so glad you didn't have to experience that..' I smiled the best I could, hoping it would rub off on dad. I didn't want to see him like this. So I did the only thing I could, I put my face up to him and kinda nuzzled him, hopefully that would help.
'What was that? June are you trying to tell me something?' Was my dad's response. I nuzzled him more, forcing my head into his hands the way a dog would if someone is upset. He tentatively rubbed my head, and I could see that it calmed him down a little. The rest of the drive was in silence, but I could almost feel the emotions my father was feeling. Maybe it was a side effect of whatever I am? My father turned on the radio only for no signal, apparently the station wasn't broadcasting. We pulled into the driveway, a look of disappointment on my dad's face. He said 'wait in the car while I talk to your mother' my mom was in the front porch anyways. My dad got out of the car, and approached my mom. 'So then Mary.' My dad was barely able to keep himself from shouting. 'Would you mind telling me why I found our daughter crying on a bridge?'
'How would I know? I haven't seen her all morning.' She blatantly lied. My dad picked up on this straight away.
'Sure, but how come you haven't seen her. You're usually up earlier than she is aren't you? I think that you most certainly have seen her.' His voice began to rise in volume now. 'Judging by the state she's in at the moment, I'd say that you had something to do with her not being home.' He was shouting now. 'I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU! THAT'S OUR DAUGHTER YOU KICKED OUT. WHAT THE HELL DID SHE DO WRONG?'
'How am I supposed to know? I couldn't understand a word that freak was trying to say to me.' My father got right up in my mother's face after she said this.
'What did you just call her?' The hate in his voice was unmissable by all that had common sense.
'I called her a freak, because she is.' A slap rang out across the morning air, and my dad walked into the house. Not long later, he walked out with a suitcase, put it in the trunk and got back in the driver's seat. He carefully placed my phone and stylus in front of me.
'It's so you can talk to me.' He then got a portable charger out of his pocket and plugged my phone into it. 'What happened with your mother? I can tell that she kicked you out, but I'd like to know exactly what she did, in case the law needs to get involved.'
"Thanks dad, I can't believe that I thought you'd abandon me." I typed, it was fairly slow but at least I could talk to people now. "I fell asleep in the bathroom, and I woke up like this. I couldn't open the door to get out, so I scratched at it. That's when mom came and opened the door, she started telling me that I wasn't her child anymore and literally threw me out of the house."
'Okay then, I'll take us to the Shepard's place. Hopefully they'll be okay with us staying there for a while.' My dad said to me, a knowing grin on his face.
"You've already asked them, haven't you?"
'You got me there. I asked Arthur if we could stay for a few weeks when I was packing my stuff. He said that he's fine with it and we can stay as long as we like. And Austin is working at the moment, he'll be back by 6 tonight'
"Oh, I see, that's good. I can't wait to see him"
'I'm sure you do. He however doesn't know about your condition..'
'oh… no'. I completely forgot. Austin doesn't know what happened to me. I was dreading the time he got home, what if he rejected me like my mom did? I then mentally slapped myself, I knew he'd never act like that. "You said you gave me this to talk to you dad. What do I sound like to you?"
'Well, your voice sounds the same. But all that I hear when you speak is something like eon flare flare. It's really unusual. I do know what you are though.'
"You do? What am I?"
'Well, aside from my daughter, you're what's called a Flareon. It's a Pokémon that the kids I teach told me about.' My dad then proceeded to tell me all that he could remember about flareon, from its typing to moves it can learn. 'Flareon is a fire type Pokémon from the first generation of Pokémon games. It's one of Eevee's evolved forms, and can use attacks, or moves such as: ember, fire fang, fire spin and lava plume.'
"Those sound dangerous. I don't want to hurt anybody. I'm just a danger to humanity. If I was a fire whatever.. then that means I'm dangerous and that's not good. I'm a literal bag of gas that could explode at anytime. What if I accidentally used one of those moves? Can I even do what my father just said? This is getting to be too much, I can't.. it's not fair. I began crying again. 'What's wrong with me… why do I have to be this?.." I sobbed.
'What's wrong dear? You're not a danger to anyone. I know you're not like that, you're a kind person. If you have these abilities, I know you'll be able to control them'.
"Thanks dad, but how can you be so certain I won't hurt anyone? I've never used these powers before in my life so I don't know how to control them." I was panicking on the inside, not wanting it to show and worry my dad. He'd enough issues to worry about as it was. It wasn't long before we reached the Shepard's house. It was a two story building with plenty of space inside it for me and my dad to stay, not that I'd take up much space anyway. As we pulled up onto their large driveway, Austin's dad came out to greet us.
'Harvey! It's nice to see you.' The man called to us as my dad got out of the car. His cheerful demeanor instantly making me relax.
'It's good to see you too Arthur.' I jumped out of the car after my dad before he closed the driver side door.
'Hi there.' I nervously attempt to wave at him. 'I'm so sorry about what's happened to you. Nobody should have to go through what you have today.'
'You're damn right they shouldn't. I can't believe that my wife would treat our daughter that way.' My dad went around to the car's trunk, and got the suitcase out. We headed inside, and I sat on the couch and laid down.
