'You busy?' The cobalt hero smiled and asked as soon as her front door opened.
'Free as a bird?' Amy chuckled a little after the initial shock wore off.
It had been a lazy Sunday and the fuchsia hedgehog had been lounging around her home, catching up on some well-deserved rest since their last battle with the ever persistent Dr. Eggman. She couldn't hide her shock when she answered the knock at her door to find her handsome hero asking if she was busy... and holding a picnic basket?
'Hungry?' He asked as he held the basket up.
'Starving!' Amy answered dramatically, causing them both to chuckle a little.
She stepped out her front door, causing Sonic to turn on his heel and start walking. With his back to her briefly, she tried to dust off any speck of dirt from her wrap dress, making sure it was pulled in tight, and run her fingers through her hair. She was playing it cool, as she did around Sonic these days, but her insides screamed so loud it could have been deafening. She quickly caught up to him after he turned around to make sure she was following.
'So, where are we headed?' The bubblegum heroine asked as they walked.
'Down by the lake somewhere.' Sonic shrugged through a smile.
'Cool. Gang meeting us there?'
'Nope, just you and me.'
Amy could have choked on the air she was breathing. He had said that so calm and collected that she almost missed it. If she was working hard to play it cool before, it was nothing to compared to how hard she had to stop herself from squealing now. Instead she just nodded as the two exchanged a smile.
She wanted to ask what had prompted him to do this. In all the time they had been friends, he had never been this forward about the two of them hanging out before, especially remaining so chill about it. Was something up? Was this a date? Good God, is someone dying? Is the world ending?
As they arrived at the lake, finding a cozy patch of grass surrounded by blooming flowers close to the river bed, the cobalt hedgehog laid out a picnic rug and began unpacking it's contents. Fresh fruits and sandwiches, pastries and biscuits. It all looked delicious! There was no way Sonic put it all together?
'This looks incredible! Who made all this?' Amy asked as she popped a strawberry into her mouth.
'Yikes, ye have little faith, Ames?' Sonic smirked. Every time he called her by that name she felt her cheeks grow hot.
'Sorry,' she rolled her eyes a little, 'but seriously though, who did this?'
'I did!'
Now she really was almost choking on a second strawberry, causing Sonic to laugh at her a little. She pat her chest a few times so she could breathe again before looking at the cobalt hero in astonishment, him sporting a rather proud and smug smile. They started to eye each other off through smirks, seeing who would break first.
'Alright, alright,' Sonic rolled his eyes, 'I may have had help from the local bakery.'
'That's what I thought.' Amy giggled, throwing a grape at him a little flirtatiously.
The pair got to chatting away, discussing their most recent battle with Eggman and how they had been spending their down time since. It was all going rather smooth, nothing awkward or uncomfortable, just two friends enjoying each other's company. Though, Amy was almost bursting at the seams. She wasn't sure she could wait any longer to ask what had prompted this lunch date. Was it a date?
'So, Sonic.' Amy began after a lull in the conversation, trying to sound confident but her voice wavered with nerves.
'Hmm?' He turned his head to her a little, rest back on his elbows as a breeze drift through his quills.
'What's the occasion?' She asked boldly.
'What do you mean?' Sonic cocked a brow, genuinely curious.
'Well, in all the time I've known you, you have never showed up at my house with a picnic basket and invited me to lunch.' Amy began, 'Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about being served all this lovely food!'
'C'mon, Ames.' Sonic ruffled his quills, the way he did when he was nervous, 'can't a guy just take a friend out to lunch?'
There's her nickname again, the one that sent butterflies so violently around her stomach her breathe would almost hitch. The name closely followed by a word that shot them all down one by one... friend. She turned to face the river so he wouldn't see the unmissable disappointment on her face.
'He can.' Amy agreed, almost sadly.
He may not have had the best track record on picking up on emotions, particularly romantic ones, but even he knew that answer probably disappointed her, despite how she tried to hide it. If he was honest with himself, he wasn't just having lunch with a friend. It was lunch with Amy. He went to the trouble of getting a nice picnic together, finding a beautiful and secluded spot, despite how casual he played off his efforts. He really did want this time with her to be perfect.
'How long have we known each other? Eight, ten years?' Sonic asked after a short silence.
'Try sixteen.' Amy smirked through an eye roll.
'Ah, yes, of course.' Sonic answered sarcastically, 'A long time, right?'
'Right?' The fuchsia heroine arched a brow at him, wondering where this was going.
'Well, you know, I-uh...' the earlier confidence seemed to be lost as his nerves started to settle in, 'I just want you to know that I care about you, a lot, and uh... this is how I'm showing it.'
His muzzle was so red it could rival a certain hot-headed echidna. He looked out at the river, watching the wind blow through the trees and the clouds pass along the bright blue sky. Amy watched him for a second, a blush creeping up on her own cheeks. It suddenly dawned on her how close they were sitting, making the butterflies in her stomach fly around again as she watched him shuffle nervously, still leaning back on his elbows.
'I care about you... a lot, too.' She mustered out as calm as possible, shifting little on her hands that she was leaning back on.
They turned to look at each other for a second, nervous smiles creeping up onto their faces. It seemed so juvenile, they were in their twenties after all. However, their was always something about their relationship that made them feel like kids again, so bubbly and free.
Before either of them realised what was happening, Sonic leaned forward a gently kissed the corner of her lips, not sure where his sudden burst of confidence had come from. When he pulled away only a second later, he lingered a little closer to face, his face completely hot. She responded with a smile and leaned forward to peck his lips gently, ending it almost as soon as it had begun.
Apparently, nothing need be said. They just giggled a little before they turned their gazes back out to the river. Everything around them was so silent and peaceful, nothing to hear bar the babbling brooks. That and the wild trains of thought going through both their minds...
'Can I see you tomorrow?' Sonic asked as the two hedgehogs stop on Amy's front porch.
The sun was setting when they started to head home, the sky littered with fluorescent oranges, yellows, pinks and purples. The cerulean speedster watched the setting sun dance in Amy's eyes and make her pink fur glisten as they stopped at her door. It was breath-taking, but he said nothing.
'I'd love that.' Amy answered calmly through a beaming smile.
They spoke so cautiously and tender, whatever had been brewing between them finally coming to the surface for the first time. Still nervous and unsure where another burst of confidence had come from, Sonic took her hand in his before kissing her goodbye, holding his lips against hers a little longer than before, until he broke away to kiss her once more on the cheek and dashing away into the sunset.
The hot pink honey stood a little dazed for a few seconds, waiting to wake up from whatever dream she was in. She never did wake up though, reality suddenly hitting her fair in the face before she finally got to squeal, clenching her fists as she jumped up and down like a school girl.
'Rouge, you aren't going to believe this!' She squealed down her communicator as she entered her front door.
