The smart thing to do would have been to wait for back up. But then the absolute scumbag they had been tracking for the last two weeks would have gotten away. So against her better judgement, Hailey pursued. Rounding the corner of the alley, Hailey watched as Andre' Burtolini's large figure jumped the fence into a grungy back yard before slamming his way through the back door and disappearing from her view. She slowed momentarily to radio her team of the location before jumping the fence and making her way up the steps. The house was obviously abandoned, it's windows boarded up, and as she slowly pushed the door open she was met with pitch black. Gun pointed straight out and flash light shining through the filth, Hailey took a deep breath before fully stepping inside. Working her way through the lower half of the house, she noted there was an upstairs and a basement. Ears keen, she listened for any sign of where he might have gone. The front door was secured shut and none of the windows had been disturbed, meaning he was still inside with her. The door to the basement was slightly cracked open so Hailey decided to check there first. With her foot she nudged it open just enough to slip inside. Not surprisingly, the basement was even darker than the previous rooms, a dark void even her flashlight struggled to illuminate. Her foot barely touched the first step before firm hands gripped her shoulders and slammed her into the wall beside her. The force took her breath away and she lost grip of her gun. Her heart sank with each clang of her weapon falling down the stairs, knowing she was in a bad situation and praying her team was close behind.
"Stupid bitch, I told you not to follow me!" Andre' screamed into her ear. "You're dead."
Before she could even comprehend the threat, Hailey was yanked backwards, crashing into his chest. With one arm wrapped around her shoulders, effectively pinning her in place, his other hand delivered a harsh blow to her rib cage, causing her to cry out in pain.
"Shut up!" He yelled again, his breath hot against the side of her face.
Hailey pursed her lips and fought to control her breathing, she knew she needed to focus to stand a chance against him. The other part of her realized that no matter how hard she fought, Andre' was at least double her size and there was no way she was going to overpower him.
Another blow to her ribs, solidifying the fact that at least one rib was broken. Every breath burned and it was a struggle to maintain control. The fist using her as a punching bag made it's way into her hair, pulling roughly and causing her to cry out again, the scream leaving her lips before she could stop it.
"You really don't listen, do you?" Andre' asked and his voice was a mix of laughter and rage. He yanked her head backward, slamming it against him. Even though she couldn't see in the darkness, she knew he was looking right at her.
"I'll shut you up" He muttered into her ear. And with those words she was suddenly airborne. The weightless feeling was short lived as she quickly met the concrete at the bottom of the steps. Her head smashed into the wall as she rolled to a stop and stars swirled around her eyes. The room was spinning as she fought to maintain consciousness. She thought she heard more footsteps upstairs, but couldn't focus long enough to be sure. Her ears rang, her head swirled and her stomach started to churn. She managed to turn herself just enough before she was sick on the floor beside her. Unable to hold her head up any longer, it dropped back onto the cold floor below. The darkness around her somehow becoming more black as she felt herself begin to slip into unconsciousness.
"Chicago PD!" Someone might have yelled in the distance. Or maybe that was just wishful thinking.
"Hailey!" Her name rang through the abyss. "Hailey, talk to me!"
Jay was there. He had found her. She was safe. And with that she let go.
