AN- Set during the early part Mark of Athena, just after their Journey of the Seven started. I own nothing. Short fluff piece
We're teenagers. Yeah, we may be on a quest that might end with one of us dying. Probably more than one of us because we're demigods. But we've still got to do chores. Everyone must do chores. Hedge was quick to say he wasn't our moms and he wasn't a maid. Everything had to be done and he expected a clean ship. So, we split it. Everyone does every chore… except me and Annabeth. Now don't misunderstand me. We still have chores. In fact, we got the least favorable ones. But neither one of us is allowed on dishwashing duty anymore...and Hedge doesn't permit us to do any of our chores together. It's not really my fault. At least, not mine alone. Not completely.
It started off normal enough. After dinner one night, Annabeth and I stayed in the kitchen to clean up. She and I seemed to have dish duty more often than not, though we didn't mind. It was an easy chore for a son of Poseidon, and it gave us time together. "I swear there's more dishes than at Camp" she mumbled and I laughed, pulling her towards me for just a moment. "I missed you more than you'll ever know" Her voice sounded shaky and I knew I didn't want her thinking about my disappearance. I knew I'd never make it up to her. I couldn't, even though I really wanted to. She leaned into me for a kiss but we're both on guard. We had to be. Not just for monsters, but for satyr chaperones. Hedge had the secret talent of walking in just as we were about to kiss. Why he didn't do that to Jason and Piper I don't know...it honestly didn't seem fair to me. Not that I could ever voice my complaints. Hedge already didn't like me and the quest had barely begun.
"You rinse, I'll dry?" I offer and she sighed. She's worried, I know. We all are. Most of us were still strangers and yet somehow, they expected us to survive this? "Or maybe I should rinse...the whole waterbender thing?" I asked to get her to smile. I'd do anything to get her to smile. To see her grey eyes sparkling. Especially now after all the time we spent apart.
"Sorry… I was just thinking" Annabeth admitted as she adds soap to the pile of dishes. "The prophecy…"
"Which one?" I don't bother keeping the bitterness out of my voice. Not around her. Not after everything we'd been through together. That earned a laugh and I smiled, victoriously.
"Come on. We've got dishes to clean…" She said finally and turned on the faucet to fill the sink. As much as I want to ignore our chores and focus only on my girlfriend who I hadn't seen in months, I know we've got work to do. There are definitely more dishes on the days I'm assigned to wash.
We got about halfway through the sink when Annabeth picked up the hose nozzle. Her grey eyes were sparkling with amusement and a plan of some kind. Despite the fact that the sink is completely filled to the brim with bubbles and water. I bet you know Annabeth is a master of plans. For those of you that don't know, Annabeth is a master at improvising and turning the tides. A flick of her pinkie and water comes shooting out of the hose. Her laugh is absolutely the best sound and so despite my smirk, I didn't turn it off. I added more fuel to the fire, uhhh… water.
I barely move my wrist and she ends up drenched in soapy sink-water. The surprise on her face lasts barely a second before her eyes narrow slightly and she laughs. More power in the hose and she points it directly towards me. She knows it won't affect me but for a moment neither of us care. We are both laughing and enjoying our water fight a little too much to notice the kitchen is now dripping from the walls and the water is up to our calves.
"Water in the boat!" "Percy!" "Water in the boat!" "Seal it off!" "Flood!" "Jackson! Where are you?" Five demigod voices and one satyr came rushing into the kitchen because they knew I was on clean-up that night. Frank looks panicked as he's holding a screwdriver. Piper doesn't look happy and her hair is dripping, leaving a trail of water. Hazel glances towards me like she's got a million questions, but she knows better than to ask. Jason is holding a soaked towel and his eyes are dangerous as he takes in the scene. Leo looks absolutely drenched and is slightly sizzling. Hedge looks like a drowned rat and has a life-ring around his waist. Annabeth and I don't even try to hold in our laughter.
Annabeth and I, despite standing in water which is now up to our knees, are completely dry. She's got the nozzle still in her hands and her giggles stop when she sees their glares directed towards her. She's literally caught nozzle-handed. But she's grinning at me and I smirked. Our guilty expressions betray us and we know there's no use denying anything.
"Sorry" Annabeth begins, but she certainly didn't seem too sorry to me. Not one bit. Hedge narrowed his eyes and snatched the hose from her hands. He's muttering under his breath about punishments and throwing us both overboard somewhere around Kansas.
"We were just…" I added and instantly the glares are directed towards me.
Annabeth's grey eyes are sparkling despite our punishment. We end up with the worst chores for the rest of the quest and we're forbidden from partnering together to complete them. But as she looked towards me, I could tell she didn't mind. Just to see the look on her face for a few minutes. Totally worth it.
