Hello all! Welcome to my first fanfic! I'm pretty new to this, so please read and review. I am very open to constructive criticism. Hope you enjoy it!
Chapter 1
X769
A cozy house sat on a hill that overlooked a small village named Prairie on one side and a forest on the other. Inside, a mother and her child spent their time silently enjoying each other's company. The child, his attention captured by a thick textbook, sat at the dining table, waiting for dinner to be made. The mother, moving around the kitchen, grabbing ingredients and utensils here and there, was busy making her son's favorite dish, pasta. It was his sixth birthday after all. Yet her mind was elsewhere; her little boy was growing up and she couldn't help but think back on his childhood so far.
Adonis has always been an odd boy, she mused. He's never really wanted to make any friends or even play outside, preferring to sit in the local library and read. But he doesn't read any children's books, no. He reads history. Thick textbooks with facts teenagers learned back in high school and then forgot right after. He is a quiet, intelligent child, always keeping to himself and never really starting any conversations. The very definition of an introvert, she thought, looking at her six-year-old son. But I suppose we all have our quirks. Finishing up dinner, she set the table and brought a large bowl of pasta. As she was sitting down, however, she saw the cutlery rattle a little. Thinking nothing of it, she started to serve her son but suddenly heard a large explosion.
I've been reincarnated into the world of Fairy Tail. Crazy, right? But I guess I've gotten over the shock and awe of the situation. These past six years have helped me come to terms with my circumstances. I mean, why do I, of all people, get reincarnated, right? I have never been a big fan of Fairy Tail, I barely know anything about the plotline, and I was never a very noble person. Sure I wasn't an asshole and I did a few good deeds here and there, but that's the average Joe, right? So, why have I been given this opportunity for a new life?
It is what it is. I mused. No point dwelling on it now. I've been reading as much as I can about this world: guilds, magic, history, etc. I need to figure out what I am going to do with this second life. I read fanfiction in my past life, about self-inserts into worlds like Fairy Tail and Naruto, where people from our world were reborn into another. But these self-inserts are all usually trying to save the world. Driving themselves insane to become powerful as quickly as possible, trying to figure out what an enemy's next move. Trying to prevent villains from becoming villains, manipulating the timelines to avoid dangerous conflicts. But I don't want to live like that, you know? Cause let's not mistake my situation as some transportation to a virtual world or some nonsense. I am truly living a second life. I suppose I'll live this life like others in this world are: a mage on an adventure.
Suddenly, a big tremor breaks me out of my thoughts. I look up at my mother about to open my mouth, but she quickly says, "Adonis, stay put. I'm going to go see what's happening outside".
She ran outside and then quickly yelled. "Adonis! We need to run. The village is being attacked!"
Adrenaline coursing through my body, I ran outside to see for myself. Plumes of smoke rose from various fires across the village and men in red robes, blue pants, and white masks were breaking down doors and slaughtering people. Looking closely at the scene, I spotted two soldiers pointing at my house and starting to trek up the hill.
"Hurry mom! We need to leave now! They're coming up the hill" I screamed, the feeling of uncertainty and death scaring my wits about me. She turned to me slowly, tears streaming down her face and looked at me lovingly before putting a hand on my head.
"I know son. I know. But it seems like it's too late. We only have a few minutes before those masked men reach our house and they will keep on searching when the see no one inside. We might escape, but there is no guarantee. If I stay, the soldiers probably won't think to go and look for someone else."
"But mom! I can't leave you here. So what if it's only a small chance. Come on! Please." I cried while pushing my face into her stomach, wetting her shirt with my tears. When I looked up, however, she had a determined look on her face.
"Here, take this. It's all of the jewels I have on me now, " she said, handing me a small pouch. "And remember that I will always be with you and that I love you. Now go. Run away. Don't look back," she said, kissing my forehead. I was still reluctant to leave though and so once more I hugged her, hiding my face in her shirt. How could I just walk away from my mother? I wanted to stand there and beg, drag her with me. My heart clenched at thought of just letting her go. Yet, I heard the men moving up the mountain, close to reaching the top. I knew it was time to go, to let her go. My heart breaking with every step I took, I ran behind the house before slowly and silently trekking my way down the hill. After reaching the bottom, I slowly made my way through the forest, hoping my mother's sacrifice would not be in vain.
After making what I thought was a safe enough distance, I quickly found a cave and decided to stay for the night. Setting up a fire, I sat down and took in the beauty of the forest surrounding me. The birds chirping and the rabbits frolicking about. The wonderful mix of yellow, orange, and red that painted the sky as the sun was setting. The fire's nice warm glow on my skin, comforting me like a warm blanket. Truly, the embodiment of serenity. Brushing my hand through my white locks, I closed my blue eyes, leaning against the cave walls, and took a deep breath of the refreshing smell of nature.
I cried.
I woke up the next morning, avoiding thinking about what happened yesterday. I suppose the next best move is to go to Magnolia to join Fairy Tail and learn magic. Hiking through the forest was a quiet and lonely endeavor, my only company was the birds, rabbits, and squirrels I encountered along the path. It took two days to reach the nearest town. Two days filled with nothing but walking, catching and cooking rabbits, and sleeping. Two days of silence, nothing to take away my attention from my thoughts. Thoughts which, incidentally, kept leading back to my mother. Possibilities of her being alive plagued my mind. Could she still be alive? Should I go back to check for her? But I ultimately ignored these doubts; even if she was still alive, I lacked the power to make a difference. I would just get captured, and my mother's struggles would be all for naught. Reaching the next town, I immediately thanked God that there was a train station. Truthfully, I had no idea where Magnolia was; my directional sense and my knowledge of geography have always been terrible, in both lives.
Using the jewels I had, I bought the next train ticket to Magnolia. It wasn't until I jumped on the train and got my ticket punched by the conductor did I realize how close I was to beginning a new life, being a Fairy Tail mage, and, most of all, accessing magic. The train ride passed in a blur, a mix of trying to avoid thinking of my mother and trying to think of what magic I should pursue. Time flew and I found myself standing before the big large gates of a monumentally sized building with a banner proudly presenting the fairy tail symbol. I don't suppose I should knock, should I?
I leaned back in my chair and put my feet on the table, holding my beer in one hand and a book in the other. Normally, I wouldn't have put my feet up, but this was the second floor of the Fairy Tail guild. Rarely anyone was ever here. Why not indulge myself a little. A few minutes later, I heard a loud crash and looked down to the first floor for the cause.
Another guild fight. I wonder what they will break this time. I mused. Ignoring random shouts of 'flame-brain' and 'stripper' I went back to reading my book and sipping my beer. My eyes began where I left off in my book, but my attention was elsewhere.
I can't believe it. Time flies. Even though it's been 13 years, it seemed just yesterday I arrived at the guild doors. I joined the guild roughly around the same time as Laxus. Me being two years younger, he didn't try to talk to me and me being the introvert I am, didn't approach him. Around that time, none of the main cast had joined, so I was left to my own devices. The older members talked to me at first to see how I was doing and the master helped me with getting over what happened back in Prairie. He would often ask around at other guilds and places he traveled if they had heard of any survivors for me, but nothing came up. It allowed me to come out of my shell and open a little. The master had also given me a monthly stipend from the guild's treasury, on the promise I would become a fantastic Fairy Tail mage, so money was not an issue for my first two years at the guild. Like I did before I came to Fairy Tail, I spent most of my time in the library. Learning all I could about different magics, I found that I excelled in Rune and Earth magic.
In my past life, I had never been too athletic, always being a bit fat really, but I excelled in math, science, and programming. Fields that required a deep understanding of facts as well as a certain sense of creativity and imagination. Although I certainly did not lack physical fitness, my magic played a lot to my academic strengths. Rune magic and creating technique formulas were quite the same as coding, fitting together different magical words into rules to create a system. But, while I knew a few barriers here and there, and I knew a few 'words of power' like Levy's solid script magic, I mainly specialized in using Rune magic to augment my own body. And Earth magic was something I suppose people would call my secondary magic; my body augmentation didn't help too much with the attacking side of combat. But earth magic did fit me - it required that same sense of creativity that Rune magic did when coming up with spells. That, and a few other tricks here and there, of course. You can't be S-class without a diverse array of skills, after all.
As for my clothes, I was dressed in a black shirt, black jeans, a long black coat with a fur collar that reached down to my knees, and a white mask with concentric rings and tomoe for the eye holes (google 'Obito's mask during the 4th shinobi world war' and look at the first result on images). I've had this getup for some time now, but the mask I've had for way longer - I got it on my first mission. But why wear the mask at all you might ask? Well, it's to honor my first opponent in battle, who was a God slayer. This mask was handed to him by the God that taught him, the all-powerful God of DESTRUCTION! Just kidding, I bought the mask at a gift shop and wear it because it looks cool! And, I only wear it on missions. It's both an intimidation tactic as well as a way of protecting my face from those weirdo reporters like Jason.
Master's booming voice broke me out of my inner monologue and I looked down to see the first floor littered with broken chairs, tables, and beer mugs.
"STOP FIGHTING YOU BRATS! YOU'RE BREAKING EVERYTHING. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY THIS IS GOING TO COST ME? YOU'RE DRIVING ME INTO AN EARLY GRAVE!" Master yelled, standing on one of the only tables unbroken.
So the usual speech I thought, used to hearing the younger brats getting yelled at. I turned my attention back to my book to finally try and get some reading in when the master took me by surprise and started to yell at me.
"OI BRAT! YOU'RE AN S-CLASS MAGE! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE A ROLE MODEL FOR THESE KIDS. WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP THEM?" he shouted.
"Maa maa, you shouldn't scream so much, old man. It's bad for your health at that age" I blurted without thinking. Everyone was quickly silent after that. Winner of Fiore's introvert contest, the ever-silent Phantom of Fairy Tail, was talking in front of everyone - that too, talking back to the master!
"WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU BRAT! COME DOWN HERE AND I'LL SHOW YOU HOW HEALTHY THESE OLD BONES ARE," he exclaimed. I was about to reply, but someone tripped on a fallen beer mug into Mira, who bumped Natsu, who hit Gray, which then started another brawl. Ahhh. To be a Fairy Tail Mage.
"Adonis! Adonis! Come and fight me! I'm all fired up now!"
"Flamebrain, Adonis isn't going to waste his time dealing with small fry like you. Just shut up."
"What did you say you popsicle? I could totally kick his ass!"
"Ugh, will you two knock it off. I'm trying to read a book here," I interrupt, hearing their argument from the second floor.
"No! Reading is boring! Fight me!" Natsu screamed, bouncing up and down at this point, excited for a beatdown.
"I'm assuming you won't shut up until I fight you so I guess I'll spar with you. But, you alone won't be interesting. Hmmm, team up with Gray, and we'll do it," I taunted.
"Alright, fine then! You asked for this. Stripper! It's us two vs Adonis right now behind the guild. And you took your clothes off again!" Natsu yelled to Gray, who was now scrambling to find his pants. Walking to the fields behind the guildhall, I quickly did a few jumping jacks and stretched, trying to warm up. I then saw Erza approaching me.
"Adonis! I, Erza Scarlet, on my honor as a Fairy Tail wizard, challenge you to a duel! Prepare to be impaled by my many swords!" she exclaimed.
"Maa maa, you'll have to forgive me, but I'm fighting Natsu and Gray right now," I said, putting my hands up to try and placate her. After seeing her demonic stare, however, I quickly added, "You're welcome to join them of course." I don't think I like the grin she gave after either.
Natsu and Gray, who finally found all of his clothes, quickly arrived after that. Setting the rules and boundaries of the match, we were about to get started when our fellow guild members started to form a crowd.
"Bets, bets! Who's going to win? Any guesses, any guesses?" Cana spoke to the crowd.
"50 on Adonis!" "What! 30 on the Natsu, Erza, and Gray." Many shouts followed, all hoping to make a quick buck. When the majority was done, Cana nodded to us to get ready. Before the match started, however, I warned my three opponents.
"You must come with the intent to kill. Anything less and you will be crushed. Make no mistake, I will not go easy, out of respect for you all." A strong level of intensity permeated through the air, making the wait even more nerve-racking. The crowd started to sweat a little but I could tell that my challengers understood what I was trying to say.
"3!" Cana screamed. The guild members started moving their heads left and right, unable to pick a side to watch.
"2!" I looked into Erza's eyes and almost shuddered at the determination and thirst for victory.
"1!" Erza, Natsu, and Gray crouch down, their leg muscles completely tense. Hmm, so their all going to run at me once.
"GO!" Cana yelled. "Re-quip" "Fire Dragon's Iron Fist" "Ice-Make Sword" As I predicted, they all came at once. Erza re-quipped a sword and sprinted at me, followed closely by Nastu with a flaming right hand and Gray with an ice sword. Whispering underneath my breath, I quickly cast a spell.
"Earth Magic: Earth Skin"
My skin quickly took a darker, brownish hue to it. Only seconds later Erza was right in front of me and slashed downwards diagonally, her sword connecting with the right side of my neck. To her shock, her sword broke cleanly in half. Using her surprise to my advantage. I planted my foot in her stomach and sent her flying backward. Natsu arrived next, but I caught his flaming fist with my left before he could act. Using my grip on his arm, I quickly picked him up and threw him backward as well. Gray, seeing Erza and Natsu so nonchalantly tossed around, stayed back to help them up and make a plan.
"You are all fools," I said. "None of you can beat me in a one on one fight. I'm not being mean, it's just a fact that you can't change at this moment. Still, instead of using your numbers, you're main advantage in this fight, you still decide to come at me one-by-one."
Erza, getting the message, pulled Natsu and Gray together for a quick group huddle. A few seconds later, they broke apart with a renewed sense of determination.
"Re-quip: Purgatory Armor"
Dressed in all black, Erza came at me full force once more, horizontally swinging a large spiked cleaver at my waist. Knowing the limits of my Earth skin spell, I let it fade and ducked under her swing, trying to sweep her leg at the same time. She jumped in the air and brought her massive weapon above her before swinging downwards. Seeing the cleaver coming, I quickly leaped backward. It connected with the ground, leaving a large crater. Shit, can't get hit by that.
Erza came once more, pushing me further and further back, not giving me an inch of space to move. It was a stalemate really, it's not like she was hitting me either. I slammed my hands to the ground and with a quick shout of "Earth Magic: Earth Wall" a perfectly smooth 7ft x 6ft rectangular slab of rock rose up. I then jumped back as Erza made her away around the wall, creating some distance. Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me.
"Ice-Make: Floor"
"Fire Dragon Roar"
With the floor turned to ice, I slipped on the ground and fell on my butt. Erza, donning a smug expression, blocked my escape, and I turned to see a beam of fire coming straight for me. Now on one knee, I placed my hands on the ice and called out another spell.
"Earth Magic: Dome"
Earth quickly broke out from under the ice and formed a small dome around me, protecting myself from Natsu's roar. Erza, getting irritated that the plan had failed, used her cleaver to smash the dome to pieces, only to see a burrowed hole in the center. I appeared twenty feet behind Erza and started clapping my hands.
"How do you like my Earth Magic: Mole technique, hmm? Quite useful. But regardless, that's more like it. A wonderfully executed plan, even if I managed to escape. Come, once more," I said beckoning them towards me with my hand. The three of them started running once more, straight towards me, while I placed my hands on the ground, getting ready to use a spell.
"Re-quip: Giant Armor"
"Earth Magic: Swamp of the Underw-" I was interrupted by a massive fist landing in the middle of the field.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU BRATS? YOU'RE RUINING THE ENTIRE FIELD, ESPECIALLY YOU ADONIS, WITH YOUR EARTH MAGIC. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH LANDSCAPING COSTS?" the master fumed, returning down to his original size. He then mumbled angrily, "I'll never get to retire, at this rate".
"Adonis is right about your teamwork though. Erza, Gray, and Natsu, you all will make a wonderful team. Adonis, the landscaping fees are coming out of your pocket, brat.
Later that day
I was looking at the job request board to see if anything particularly interesting had come up, but nope it seemed to be the same. I was about to go down to the main floor to check for something interesting when I notice someone approaching from the corner of my eye. Turning towards her, I see Fairy Tail's resident punk-rock take-over mage looking at the S-class job board for some work. I continue to the stairs leading down the first floor and make my way to the bar to order another beer and look for an interesting A-ranked job. Mira comes down not five minutes later, gathering her siblings to go on what I think is her first S-class mission. She excitedly hands over the mission request to the master, and I just barely catch of glimpse of it. That's an upper S-tier mission she's trying to take. And on her first mission too. She's ambitious.
Ehh. Whatever. She'll be fine, but it will probably open her eyes that she's not all-powerful because she's now an S-rank, I thought. But suddenly a glimpse of information popped in my head. Lisanna dies or is supposed to die in the show. It's one of the few things I remember. Could it happen on this job? And I also did say that I wouldn't use my foreknowledge at all. How I would live like everyone else in this world. Just as I thought that I decided to not act, a flash of images of Lisanna came to mind. Can I go through with this? Damn, this is a lot harder than I thought. Alright. Just this once. Hmph, so much for conviction. Making my decision, I barged into the master's office and voiced my concerns.
"Master. I am going after Mira, Elfman, and Lisanna. That's a mission for a high-level S-class mage. I don't think she's ready" I said in a rush. The master looked back at the request and paled a little.
"Good catch. You have my permission to go after them," he said quickly. I then ran out of his office and reached into my re-quip space to grab my mask. Honestly, I started learning re-quip magic simply as a convenience. It made traveling long distances on missions so much easier and allowed me to walk freely. It transformed into more than that, however, and soon grew into a more integral part of my magic. Now with my mask, I ran toward the mission site, hoping I wouldn't be too late.
Shit shit shit shit shit! This is not how my first S-class mission was supposed to go! This is supposed to be a breeze. Now Elfman's rampaging, Mira thought, looking at her surroundings. She tried to find a way to end this quickly, but couldn't think of anything. She was practically out of magic, and the beast didn't look like it had a scratch. Was there a way out of this situation?
"Let's go home Elf-ni-chan," a gentle voice said. Mira snapped her head at that, recognizing the voice. Her little sister was standing with open arms calling to her brother. But Elfman wasn't in-control right now, nothing more than a mindless beast. Without hesitation, the behemoth swung his right arm down towards Lisanna and all hope seemed to be lost.
"EARTH MAGIC: GAIA'S DEFENSE"
A massive Earth wall on Lisanna's left rose quickly, intercepting the strike. That was not enough, however, as another fist was coming quickly. The caster was a man dressed in all black with a fur collar and a white mask - Adonis, she recognized. He picked Lisanna up and threw her with surprisingly good aim. Lisanna hit the ground only a few feet in front of me and her momentum rolled her the rest of the way. I quickly checked to make sure Lisanna was okay, before looking back to the figure in black, only to see a large fist where the black figure was. My mind registering what just happened, I had only one thought.
"ADONIS!"
"EARTH MAGIC: GAIA'S DEFENSE" I yelled, only barely making it in time. I then turned to see if Lisanna was okay but saw another fist from the beast coming. Thinking quick, I picked Lisanna up and threw her over to where I saw Mira standing. I just barely made in time, because, only seconds later, a fist landed right where I was standing. I heard Mira screaming my name in the background, but I suppose that's to be expected when seeing this particular spell for the first time.
"RUNE MAGIC: AUTHORITY OF THE GODS"
The beast picked lifted his arm, expecting to see a splat of blood, but instead saw Adonis completely unscratched.
This is my masterpiece, my greatest creation. It is the combination of Rune Magic, Re-quip Magic, Earth Magic, and years of reading and truly understanding various books on ethernano. It is what earned me my title 'The Phantom of Fairy Tail' after all. It's my version of Obito's, a Naruto character, main power: Kamui. During the show, I remember them vaguely explaining his powers, talking about how he can phase through an object or attack by transporting parts or the whole of his body to a pocket dimension. What is Re-quip Magic though, if not accessing a pocket-dimension? Using complex Rune Magic, I created a formula that allowed me to transport my body to the Re-quip space. The problem was, however, that I could not only transfer only part of my body and so, with intangible feet, I would fall through the floor. Modifying the formula to use some of my Earth magic at the soles of my feet, however, and the problem was fixed. The seal, placed on my shoulder inside my black Fairy Tail guild mark, only requires me to channel magic into it to work.
Looking back at the now confused beast, I let my Earth wall from before crumble. Clapping my hands together, I screamed out my next move.
"EARTH MAGIC: GAIA'S APPLAUSE"
Two massive hands made of Earth came up and in a clapping motion and squished the beast in the middle. I was deciding my next move but a bright flash of light enveloped the beast. A few seconds later, the beast was gone, leaving a bruised Elfman laying in-between two massive Earth hands. I let the hands crumble, and ran over to Elfman to check up on his health. He barely opened his eyes before closing them, falling unconscious. A few seconds later, Mira and Lisanna came running over.
"Is he alright? Please tell me he's okay," Mira cried. "I'm so stupid. I should've never taken this job".
"Don't worry. He's fine, just unconscious. It's probably due to exhaustion more than anything. Lisanna, are you okay? I'm sorry I had to throw you like that. It seemed like the only option at the time."
"Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks for saving me by the way. Let's get back to the guild and get Elfman to the infirmary," Lisanna replied.
After we got back to the guild, Elfman was immediately brought to the infirmary and Lisannawas told to stay as well. Mira and I reported the situation to the old man and then we left for our apartments because it had gotten late. In the next few days, Mira had not shown up to the guild at all, and people were starting to get worried. It was well known that she cared a lot for her siblings and being somewhat responsible for them getting injured must have hit home. Taking it upon myself to resolve this, I went to Mira's apartment and rang the doorbell. Hearing muffled footsteps behind the door, I knew someone was home. Still, no one answered the door. Trying the doorbell one more time, the door open to show a disheveled Mira with a scowl.
"Ugh, what do you want! Can't you see I don't want to be bothered right now?" she exclaimed.
"Well, you haven't been at the guild for a few days, and everyone at the guild is worried. I know you must be going through a rough time, so I just came to check up" I quickly said, trying to calm her down.
"Well, I'm fine. So go home. I don't want to talk to anyone right now. You couldn't possibly understand what I'm going through right now, so don't bother," she said while trying to close the door. My hand stopped her before she could, however.
"That's true. I don't have siblings and I usually go solo on a mission. Regardless, I know what it means to be responsible for a family member's death, so I know a bit what you're feeling right now." I saw her eyes looking intently at me. Good. Now to get my message across. "No one got fatally injured or even critically injured. Elfman will probably be out of the infirmary in the next few days and I bet Lisanna will be out today. And the truth is that, yeah you made a mistake. But that's part of being a wizard. An S-class title doesn't mean you're supposed to be perfect. You need to try and let go and learn from the experience."
By the end of my short speech, she was trembling a little. Suddenly, she threw her arms around me and planted her face in my chest, her tears wetting my shirt. Slowly, I returned the hug.
"Sorry for before. It's just that it's so hard to let it go, you know? I'm the oldest sibling. I'm supposed to protect them from everything, take care of them and Lisanna could've died that day. And it would've been all my fault. Because I was too caught up in my new title," she mumbled, calming down a bit.
"I think, in time, you'll be able to grow past this. You're the strongest woman I know, after all, the demon Mirajane." She let go of me after, still looking down at the ground. She then turned around and started walking inside. Just as she was about to enter, she turned around with a slight blush on her face and a small smile.
"Thank you, Adonis".
