The third (revised) chapter is here. Hope you enjoy and as always please review and comment :)
"Simon, Simon," A whisper close to my ear wakes me up, I ignore the voice and go back to sleep. "Simon" I recognize the voice now, it is my brother Alvin now gently shaking my shoulder. "Simon!" Alvin raises his voice as he violently shakes me out of my sleep.
"What!" I yell in a whisper, careful to not wake up Theodore.
"Did you hear that? I heard some kind of ghostly moan," Alvin says to me as he starts looking around.
"No." I reply back, clearly annoyed that he woke me up just to tell me this.
"But I heard something, really! There's something outside. I heard this thing say.. 'donde estan mis hijos.' There's only one being that will say that and that would be The Weeping Woman!"
I roll my eyes and say, "Alvin please, you were just dreaming. Go back to bed."
I lay back down and proceed to go back to bed.
"No! It was not a dream! I swear, I heard it with my own ears!" Alvin exclaims, in desperation.
"Oh please." I say, irritated that we were losing sleep for something that he apparently "heard".
"Why don't you believe anything I say, Simon!?" Alvin replies, shaking me to make sure I stay awake.
"Errr! look my tempered brother, I'm smarter and more rational than you and being your brother I have seen your constant gullibility. Also, what you are saying isn't real, the weeping lady is just a folklore that is meant to scare people." I say making my point straight. "Now if you don't mind, I am going back to sleep and I think you should do the same." I pull my covers over me.
"Okay sure don't believe me, but how about I prove to you that she does exist and then you'll believe me. Let's go outside, into the forest and find her! You know, let's do some ghost hunting!" Alvin says, pulling my covers away from me.
"Are you out of your mind!? Why will I go into the dark and scary forest with you! AT NIGHT! Dave will kill us!" I yell at him in a whisper.
"Oh come on Simon, are you scared." Alvin says, mocking me.
"No. I just think it's stupid and clearly not safe to explore the woods this late." I say.
"Okay fine then, I'll go by myself." Alvin says as he goes to his luggage and grabs his sweater and changes himself out of his pajamas.
At those words I knew I had to join him. There was no way I would let him venture into the forest by himself. I need to go with him, mostly to make sure he doesn't get himself in trouble or worse, seriously hurt.
"No! Wait Alvin...ugh...okay, I'll go with you," I say as I sit up and put on my glasses. Alvin gives me an I-know-you-will-do-it look, "But! Just to make sure you don't get into trouble."
"Yay! I knew you would come to your senses." Alvin says as he puts on his shoes and grabs his backpack.
At those words, he almost pushes me to the edge, but I take a deep breath and just ignore his remark. Remember, you're just going to make sure Alvin doesn't do anything stupid. I get out of bed and go to my luggage that is placed at the end of my bed. I grab my long blue sweater and quietly get dressed. Later, I put on my shoes and grab my backpack which has a flashlight, my to-go tool kit, and a cellphone.
"Great! Ready to go?" Alvin says putting on his backpack and then opening the door.
"I guess." I say.
"Awesome! Let's go!" Alvin loudly replies in a whisper.
We both leave our room and quietly sneak into the living room. Once there, we walk to the front door. But, as Alvin starts opening the door, something urgent comes to mind.
"Wait Alvin," I quickly grab his wrist, preventing him from opening the door any further. He looks at me and I say, "we can't just casually walk through the hotel, there are probably cameras and workers supervising the lobby at all times. So, I don't think they will just let a couple of kids go on a nightly stroll by themselves." I say to Alvin.
"Hum... your right, but how are we going to make our way outside without being spotted?" Alvin asks as we quietly leave our suite and close the door.
As we are standing in the vast hallway, I look down the corridor and notice an air vent above a door that I am suspecting leads to the custodians closet, "Aha! There's an air vent right there," I say as I point at the air vent, "We can use the vents and I am 100% sure they will lead us outside. I learned that air vents lead to the outdoors, since the air is taken from the outside and then sent to a cooling machine where..."
"Please Simon, we're about to go on a paranormal investigation and you are making this very boring." Alvin says in desperation.
"Well, knowledge is very important and I don't know about you but knowing where the air vents end can help us to, I don't know, not get caught!" I say starting to lose my patience.
"Okay, okay fine! Oh before we embark on this adventure, here." Alvin grabs something from his backpack and hands me a camera.
"A camera, really." I say looking at the camera.
"One doesn't go on a ghost hunt without a camera! If we see something we have to make sure we catch it on video." Alvin says
Wow, he really thinks we are going to "catch" something. I open my backpack and put the camera inside.
"Well the question is, how are we going to reach that vent?" I ask.
"It's not that tall. I have an idea, I'll stand right here and I'll boost you up. Then you can use your fancy tools to open the door and I'll just boost you into the vent. Then you can give me your hands so you can boost me up. Deal?" Alvin says as he prepares himself to lift me off the ground.
"Ugh! You're lucky I have my little tool kit but okay. Just don't drop me." I say as I grab the screwdriver from my tool box and later have Alvin lift me off the ground, high enough where I can unscrew the bolts.
"Hold...still...Alvin!" I yell, quietly.
"Well hurry up! My arms are getting tired." Alvin replies as he struggles to keep me lifted.
"Almost...and done!" I exclaim as I finish unscrewing the last bolt. I jostle the gate open and quietly put it inside the vent.
"Okay Alvin, go ahead and give me a boost."
With no moment to waste, Alvin musters up all his strength and boosts me into the vent. Once I know my surroundings are safe, I look at Alvin and give him my hands.
"Okay, I'm good, give me your hands so I can pull you up." I quickly say.
Alvin grabs my hands and with all my strength I pull him up. Once he is inside the vent with me, I hand him the gate and tell him to adjust it at the entrance, just how it was before. We can not leave any traces. I start leading the way, with Alvin following closely behind me.
"Now don't crawl how you would usually crawl. Metal makes a lot of sound and it can be easily heard from a long distance, so the best thing to do is slide crawl. By doing that, it will make less noise and we will not create a lot of attention." I say looking behind me towards Alvin.
Alvin nods.
A note to self, sneaking out of the hotel through the air vents is a very uncomfortable experience. It is a very tight space and it feels very claustrophobic, also it hurts to slide crawl through a narrow passageway.
"Oh, we have reached a "slide", go feet first and use your hands and feet for traction. I rather not slide blindly, who knows how long or steep it is…" I quietly say to Alvin.
We both carefully make our way down this semi-steep slide, making sure we don't actually slide and risk getting hurt. Once we reach the end, we continue through the labyrinth.
After a pretty long time crawling through the air vents, I finally see another gate, hopefully hinting that we have reached the outside. We crawl towards the gate and to my relief I am right, we made it to the end of the labyrinth. Wonderful, we also made it to the back of the building, perfect.
I kick the gate open with as much force as I can, the gate goes flying out and I jump down the vent. I underestimate the height of the drop and I fall about 10 feet down to the ground. I tumble down once my body hits the ground.
Ouch! Once I stop rolling, I slowly stand up and make sure I'm okay. Note to self, I will never do that ever again.
"Careful Alvin! That's a pretty big drop." I yell, it is Alvin's turn to make the jump. He jumps and lands without tumbling or slamming onto the floor. He lands with perfect form, like the jump was nothing. Well what do you expect from an athlete?
I got to where Alvin is at, we both grab the flashlights and cameras from our backpacks and proceed into the eerie forest.
"So, where did you hear this "ghostly" moan?" I say making sure I don't trip.
"Um…I think it was over there, follow me." Alvin says running to the forest.
"Alvin! Wait!" I yell as I start following him with the flashlight firmly locked onto Alvin's direction.
Although beautiful in the day, the forest did not have a welcoming aura at night. It's thick trees and eerie sounds of the nightly creatures gave the forest a very spooky and ghostly appearance. The howls of the wolves and the hoots of the owls can be heard from every direction, the slight sounds of twigs breaking only amplifies my paranoia. This is no place for an 11 year old, we can not stay here for long. But Alvin didn't care about the possible danger we may be in, he is more focused on finding The Weeping Lady.
"Alvin, please, we shouldn't be going this deep into the woods. It is not safe to be here in the middle of the night, an animal could attack us at any minute." I say to Alvin, clearly frightened.
"Don't worry Simon, we'll just be here for a couple of more minutes and then we'll go. Look, we can still see the hotel from here so we are not that far from the building," Alvin explains pointing to the hotel.
Soon a small dark shadow appears on top of a tree trunk, "What's that!" Alvin points both his flashlight and camera towards the direction of the noise, but only to find a squirrel jumping from tree to tree.
"It's just a squirrel Alvin," I say.
"Ugh!" Alvin groans.
"Just keep walking, I just can't wait for your little investigation to be a total let down." I say with a chuckle.
Alvin looks at me arrogantly.
We keep walking, and walking, and walking. Alvin tries calling to the "spirit" multiple times but we didn't hear anything unusual, just the hoots of the owls.
It was starting to get really late. The moon was at its brightest point. I was starting to get very tired and sleepy from all the walking but Alvin didn't stop; he was desperate to find "her".
"Alvin!" I yell and Alvin turns to face me.
"What!"
"It's late and we haven't seen or heard anything strange, we should go back to our suite before Dave finds out we are missing."
"Uhhh... I guess you're right, it was probably just a dream." Alvin responds with disappointment.
I give him an I-told-you-so look. Finally he listens to me.
We start walking towards the direction of the hotel. Everything was going fine until Alvin and I hear something very unusual. A ghostly and soothing singing voice of a woman. We immediately stop walking to carefully hear this strange voice. Who could that be? Why would a person be singing, in the woods, in the middle of the night?
"Hello!" I yell. But later, the voice starts singing some kind of song. I listened and stop calling.
Come my little children
come to me
I will protect you from everything
Wow, this is the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Unknowingly, I stare blankly towards the direction of the singing. At this point, my only desire was to follow the voice and continue listening to the singing.
You will be happy with me
you can trust me with anything
you want to follow me, I know you do
so come my little one, come to me.
The more I listen, the more blank my mind goes, every worry slowly floating away from my mind. I forget about going back to the hotel. The only thought currently circulating my blank mind is to follow the beautiful voice. I start walking towards the direction of the voice, deeper into the woods, admiring the singing.
"Simon stop listening to the singing," I hear a faint but clear voice in my empty head.
"No! Follow the voice, it will lead you to greatness." Another voice starts speaking, stronger than the last one.
I keep walking deeper into the woods, eyes transfixed towards the location of the singing. Completely controlled by the singing.
"Stop! It's dangerous!" The other voice urgently explains and this time louder than before.
"Keep walking!" The other voice says but not as loud as the other voice.
"STOP!" The voice yells.
I immediately stop in my tracks. I blink and quickly pull myself out of this hypnotic state. I look around, confused. Where am I? I wonder. And where is Alvin?
I look around and notice that Alvin is nowhere to be found. I can still hear the singing and even though I managed to pull myself out of my trance-like state, I am still being mesmerized by the singing. Yet, I resist the temptation to give in again. I quickly cover my ears.
Wow, I never knew how strong my will is.
"I need to do something about this, fast! My earmuffs! Of course!" I remember I packed earmuffs in case it was cold.
I quickly grab my earmuffs from my backpack. I put them on and to my relief everything is muffled, perfect. Now time to find Alvin and LEAVE THIS PLACE! I run as fast as I can, scanning every tree, bush, crevice, and trail hoping to find Alvin. I am shaking with fear, I am alone and there is something or someone luring us, we are not okay, we are in grave danger.
"Alvin!" I yell, "Alvin where are you?!"
Later, I notice something, I see a red sweater in between the bushes. I walk through the bushes to get a closer look at whom it may be and to my disbelief, it's Alvin, just standing there.
"Alvin!" I yell as I run up to him. I'm horrified by what I am seeing. Alvin is just staring, blankly, and expressionless. He did not even flinch when I appeared.
"Come on Alvin!" I grab both of his shoulders and start shaking him, violently, but he doesn't respond. He is definitely under the music's spell, I need him to snap out of it.
"Alvin! Please! snap out of it!" I yell almost crying with fear. I am desperate at this point.
Wait. What is happening? I notice that Alvin starts walking, taking slow and sluggish steps, still mesmerized by the singing. I follow him, staying right by his side trying everything I can to stop him and snap him out of this trance.
To my horror, I can now faintly hear the singing through my earmuffs. Oh no this is not good, that would only mean one thing, we are getting closer to this "thing" or person. Luckily, the singing's effects aren't strong enough to snap me in again.
You are almost here my love
keep walking to me
I will have you
under my control
I can now clearly hear the lyrics. Okay this is NOT good, we have to leave. I can feel myself slipping, my will is strong but it won't last forever. Alvin continues walking towards the direction of the singing, I keep following him.
"Please Alvin!" I am now crying in desperation. It's hopeless, I can't save him.
But when all hope was lost, Alvin eventually wakes up.
"Simon, why are you crying?" Alvin says, confused.
All of the sudden, I couldn't hear the song through my earmuffs. The singing stopped, what happened? Did this "thing" or person give up? What-what's happening?
I don't know what is going on but what matters right now is that Alvin is awake, that's good, right? Well I'm glad my brother is safe now.
"Oh my! Alvin! You snap out of it!" I say as I embrace my brother in a hug. I couldn't resist myself, I was so happy to have my brother back.
"Okay, wow, um...exactly what happened?" Alvin says confused by my reaction.
"Wait. You don't remember? That voice, couldn't you hear it? It-it was controlling us and..." I say, frantically, but I am quickly interrupted by Alvin.
"Wow, calm down. What-what voice?" Alvin asks, worried.
"Alvin how do you not remember it?! There was singing and..." I say now frightened and irritated. But, I'm suddenly interrupted by a strange blue orb floating in between the trees, not too far away from us.
"Alvin...what is that?" I ask, pointing towards the direction of the light. My heart now beating out of my chest.
Alvin quickly turns towards the direction I am pointing and immediately notices the strange blue orb. He is at a loss for words.
"I-I don't know Simon...I-" Alvin is quickly interrupted, by the sudden change of movement of the orb. The light anomaly all of a sudden dashes to our location.
"Oh no..." I whisper, "RUN!"
Both Alvin and I did not hesitate to begin running. We were truly in danger, we had to get away from this orb. By the way it is moving, whatever this thing is, I don't think it just wants to say hello. We jumped rock after rock, bushes after bushes, and dodged a few branches. We did everything we could to redirect this orb that was quickly approaching us.
I grab the courage to look behind my back to see if this orb was still behind us and to my disbelief, the orb was nowhere to be found.
"Alvin! Stop!" I yell as I stop. Alvin followed shortly.
"Simon are you crazy?!" Alvin says.
"No wait, I think we lost it." I say retrieving my breath.
We look around our surroundings just to make sure my suspicion was correct. We couldn't hear any singing and there was no orb in sight. I breathe a sigh of relief, we lost this thing.
"Let's get out of here." But I spoke too soon, as things were getting better it got much worse.
"SIMON!" Alvin screams.
I hear Alvin's petrifying scream, but before I have time to react, a blue light passes through my chest. My body immediately goes limp and I fall to the ground. The trees, stars and the moon start fading away and I am soon taken over by darkness.
"Alvin, Simon, Theodore my babies (crying) I'm sorry!" I hear the crying of a woman echo in my head. I clearly understand this voice, it is my mother.
"Mom don't leave us!" I say inside me, "I miss you!"
I beg my mom to come back, but I am left crying, internally, in agony.
What is happening? What went past me? What did it do to me? Why did I hear my mom's crying?
There you go! The revised third chapter is done. Wow it needed A LOT of revisions. So what happened to Alvin and Simon? What was that mysterious blue light? It is the beginning of a crazy adventure. Find out in the next chapter. Hope you enjoyed it :)
