Chapter 1: A Surprising Visitor

Boston, 2007

"Are you sure you don't want me going with you?"

20 year old, brown-haired, brown-eyed, slim build, Melissa Reynolds, turned from her travel bag that was on her dresser, and smiled at her 15 year older, African American, very short black-haired, green-eyed, athletic build, fiancée of three months, who had been her boyfriend two years prior.

"I'm sure." She took a breath before continuing. "This is a journey I need to walk on my own."

Deion had been very supportive of her on wanting to do this since she told him, but he also didn't want her to feel she was on her own, especially when they were about to become husband and wife in a few months, so he cupped her cheek and spoke with love and comfort. "Just know that you aren't alone." Then he smiled with his green eyes sparkling. "And soon our journeys will be going down the same road."

She smiled, showing off her gap between her top front teeth, with love as she wrapped her arms around his neck. "I can't wait, and thank you for being supportive in all of this." She sighed again before continuing. "I love my parents, they gave me an amazing life, but I'm ready to find out this other part of me, why I..."

He cuts her off as he listed everything about her that he loves, making her blush slightly each time as she looked down shyly, then he lifted her chin up and finished with. "And who gave you this amazing smile."

She shook her head and whispered in a disapproving tone. "Deion."

He chuckled and shook his head while bringing her closer. "I don't care if you're not crazy about the gap between your teeth, I happen to love it, so deal with it."

Having him look at her like that was all she needed to trust in his words completely, so she smiled wider. "I love you, so much."

"I love you too, babe."

They kiss softly before they get into a hug for a few moments before they pulled back, and after one more soft kiss, he goes to one of the comfy chairs and sits down while he grabs his football game plan book since he was a defensive coach for Boston College, and started working on some new plays he wanted to teach his players next week, as Melissa sighed softly while she finished her packing.

She knew at a very young age that she was adopted, and when she had gotten to that age where she started asking questions, her adoptive parents, Stacy and David, told her everything that they knew, which wasn't much themselves, but she could also tell it made them a little sad/worried that they weren't doing enough for her, so she stopped asking.

Then at 18 years old, where she was already a Junior at Harvard University, her adoptive parents gave her a gift, the name and address to her biological mom, knowing their daughter needed to know where she came from, and she was very excited to find out. But, she was also scared, so it took her two years to finally get up the nerve to make this trip, and while she was still a little scared, she knew she needed to do this. She had to know where she came from, and if she had other siblings, about her da...

Her thoughts get interrupted when she hears Deion's voice. "Hey babe, your phone is ringing, it's your brother."

When she had turned four, Stacy and David were shocked that they were having a biological child since they were told having one of their own would be nearly impossible, which was why they wanted to adopt a child so bad. And when their son came, instead of feeling less love from her parents, Melissa felt more loved than ever before. She loved her brother very much while everybody loved them both.

She turned around and smiled while walking up to her fiancé to grab her phone from his hand. "Thanks."

He just nodded with a smile while she walked out of the room and answered her phone so she could talk to her sixteen year old brother, which they were still really close despite them not living in the same house anymore.

When she returned to the bedroom ten minutes later, Deion was in the bathroom going through his nightly routine, and when Melissa stepped in the room to do the same, he asked after finishing brushing his teeth. "Is he ok?"

She nodded. "Yeah, just needed a little reassuring that I'm not leaving for good. That I am coming back."

He took a breath and nodded while she puts toothpaste on her toothbrush. "I know where he is coming from."

Before she puts the toothbrush in her mouth, she looks at him in shock. "Wait, I thought you were all in for me wanting to do this?"

He nodded immediately and spoke with softly. "I am, don't get me wrong, I know how much you want to do this...how much you need to do this, but meeting biological family can change everything, and once you meet them, you might feel you need to be near them, and I'm afraid I might lose..."

She cuts him while cupping his cheek with smile. "You won't ever lose me, I love you with my whole heart and I'm marrying you in three months, that's not changing, now matter what happens, and as for leaving everybody else behind, that is not happening either. I was born and raised here, and I can't imagine seeing myself anywhere else." She ran her thumb up and down his cheek as she finished. " I'm just trying to put together the rest of 'my' puzzle so I can finally feel..."

He cuts her off with a smile. "Complete."

She nodded with a smile, he always had away of completing her sentences, it's been like that since they practically met, which was when he was a teaching assistant in her math class.

They kiss softly before he walks out of the bathroom so she could finish her nightly routine, then once she was done, she did the last of her packing before walking towards the bed, and after turning out her lamp, she gets in and lays in her fiancée's arms, then he kisses the top of her head and whispers. "Sleep tight, babe. Love you."

"You too, sweetheart, love you too."

He fell asleep not long after, but she stayed awake just a little bit longer, wondering how tomorrow afternoon will go since she's leaving here very early.

Next Afternoon

Santa Monica

36 year old, brown-haired, brown-eyed, Sara was sitting at her kitchen table having a two way conversation with her foster sisters, 31 year old Kim and 29 year old Hailey.

Once she ended up in foster care at the age of 9, and after going through three bad homes in two years, they found her a good one in the Santa Monica area, and while the foster parents were slightly older than Sara's previous ones, her and the two other girls who were there when she got there were well taken care of, they all finally had foster parents who really cared about them.

And now Sara, Kim, and Hailey managed to keep in contact, despite all three of them going to different colleges and now living in other parts of the country.

Sara's thoughts get interrupted when she heard a knock on the front door, so she cleared her throat and spoke with a smile. "I'm going to have to let you girls go, but we'll talk soon."

They both said goodbye, and after Sara hung up, she sets her phone down on the table and walks out of the room, into the living room, where there was stairs that lead to a second floor, then after stopping at the front door, she started opening it while speaking, but the minute she saw the young woman standing on the other side, words got caught in her throat because it was almost like looking in a mirror that showed a younger version of herself, and if Sara wasn't a 100% sure in that moment on who this woman was, then she did the next second when the younger woman gave her a small, nervous smile, showing the exact gap teeth, and started speaking, almost stuttering really, something she did when she got nervous herself.

"I uh, I don't know uh, how to say this, but here I go." She took a breath and finished, this time in a more calmer tone while her heart was racing. "Hi, my name is Melissa Reynolds, and I..."

Sara cuts her off with tears in her eyes, feeling emotional. "You're my daughter."

Melissa saw the resemblance right away too, it was like looking at an older version of herself, so there was no question that this woman was her biological mother, and she nodded with tears in her eyes. "Yes, I am."

Not able to help herself, Sara moved forward and gave the young woman a hug with a few sniffles, never sure if this moment would have ever happened, and Melissa stood there for several seconds before she wrapped her arms around her in return, already feeling that motherly comfort, but now she needed answers to her questions that only she could answer.
