In A Different World 2: Dealing with the Past
Ch 1 Dangerous Times
Deep beneath the streets of New York in the sewers there was tension building. Four turtle brothers were facing off. These brothers were Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo Hamato and they were beginning their morning training. Their father, Hamato Yoshi and their mother Tang Shen were watching their sons face off. Michelangelo and Leonardo were up against each other a were Raphael and Donatello. "Don't think I'm gonna go easy on ya Donnie," Raphael said, getting out his sais and spinning them.
"I wouldn't hear of it Raph," Donatello said, getting out his bo staff and spinning it as well. Leonardo and Michelangelo had their weapons drawn as well.
"You're going down bro," Michelangelo taunted as he circled around his older brother. Leonardo smiled and shook his head.
"Mikey," the blue masked turtle said. "I'm fifteen and you're thirteen. I think its pretty obvious whose going to win here."
"Dude just because I'm younger than you doesn't mean I can't beat you," Michelangelo declared. Just then they heard a grunt followed by a thud. Moments later Raphael went skidding across the ground, having been knocked down by Donatello. "See?" Michelangelo said, nodding towards his red masked brother, who had gotten to his feet. "Donnie's younger than Raph and he still beat him."
"He hasn't beat me Mikey!" Raphael shouted, lunging towards his purple masked brother with a growl. Donatello smiled slightly and stepped to the side and Raphael charged right past him. Donatello then took his bo and caught Raphael in his knees, once again sending his hot headed brother to the ground.
"Heh he got you good there Raph," Leonardo said with a slight laugh. But while he was distracted Michelangelo wrapped the chain of his nunchakus around Leonardo's arm and flipped him to the ground.
"Looks like I got you good to bro," Michelangelo said with a grin. Leonardo let out a frustrated growl and got to his feet. But he had failed to get the chain off his arm and Michelangelo quickly pulled him to the ground once again.
"Damn it!" Leonardo cursed, shoving the chain off his arm and getting to his feet once again.
"Aww what's the matter Leo?" Raphael taunted as he flipped Donatello over his head. "Getting bested by our baby brother?"
"Shut up Raph," Leonardo growled as he picked up his katanas and lunged at Michelangelo. But the orange masked turtle was ready and leapt to the side, causing Leonardo to stumble. Michelangelo wasted no time and hit his oldest brother in his shell, sending him to the ground once again.
"Yeme! Yoshi called out, banging his staff on the ground. "That is enough for today my sons."
"Yes Master Splinter," the four brothers said, going to kneel before their master and father as they did after every training session.
"You did well today my sons," Yoshi complemented, walking back and forth in front of his sons. "I am proud of you. I am especially proud of the progress Donatello and Michelangelo are making. You are doing very well my sons."
"Thank you Master Splinter," the two younger turtles said with a bow.
"Leonardo," Yoshi said, turning towards his oldest son. "You were a bit cocky today. I expected better from you."
"I'm sorry Master Splinter," Leonardo said, lowering his head in shame. "I was being arrogant and Mikey proved me wrong. I should have known better.
"Yes," Yoshi said with a nod. "You should have known better." Just then Shen cleared her throat loudly. Yoshi looked over at his wife, who was giving him a look. Yoshi knew that look all to well. But he chose to ignore the look for the time being. "This behavior is unbecoming of a leader Leonardo," Yoshi pointed out. "But since you are not one to do these things normally I am willing to over look it this one time."
"Thank you Master Splinter," Leonardo said with a smile. Yoshi smiled back. "You may all go," the brown coated rat said. His sons got up and gave their master a bow before they exited the dojo. Once they were gone Shen approached her husband.
"Yoshi," the dark headed women began. "I think you were a bit harsh on Leonardo."
"Shen Leonardo must learn how to be a humble leader," Yoshi said, turning to face his wife. "If he is to be a successful leader then he must have the proper discipline."
"Yoshi," Shen said, a slight edge to her voice. "Leonardo is only a fifteen year old boy. He is bound to be a little arrogant. And may I point out that Michelangelo and Raphael were also being a bot cocky and you did not chastise them for it."
"They are not the leader," Yoshi said, as if his wife needed a reminder.
"And just because Leonardo is the leader does not mean you need to be harder on him," Shen said, crossing her arms and glaring at her husband. "Especially since he is very sensitive to what you think of him Yoshi."
"Leonardo is not the sensitive one Shen," Yoshi pointed out. "He can handle criticism."
"He worships the ground you walk on Yoshi," Shen said. "Surly you have noticed that he takes it very hard when you yell at him. And Leonardo is one to beat himself up for letting you down."
"So I should not discipline him?" Yoshi asked, raising an eyebrow at his wife.
"I am not saying that," Shen said, resisting the urge to yell. "I am saying that you should not be so harsh on him. And if you are going to chastise him for being cocky then you should do the same with your other sons."
"Shen," Yoshi said, his voice having an edge to it. "I thought we agreed that when it comes to the boys' I would be the one in charge of their training."
"That is what we agreed," Shen confirmed with a nod.
"Then let me discipline my students the way I see fit," Yoshi said.
"I just do not want any of the boys resenting you," Shen said. "And they are not just your students Yoshi. They are your sons."
"And they know that when we are in the dojo I am their master first," Yoshi said. "They will not resent me Shen. I promise you that."
"I hope you are right," Shen said with a sigh. Then she looked at the clock. "I must be going if I want to get to work on time," she said, giving Yoshi a kiss and grabbing her purse. "I love you Yoshi."
"And I you," Yoshi said with a smile as he watched his wife leave.

Meanwhile the four brothers were quietly watching TV while their parents talked. "Man way to go Leo," Raphael said, glaring at his slightly older twin. "Mom's all mad at Father because of you."
"Raph don't start your bull shit with me!" Leonardo snapped, glaring at his red masked brother. "I am so not in the mood!"
"Bros c'mom don't fight," Michelangelo pleaded. "Mom's not mad at Father Raph. She's just talking to him."
"Yeah and even if she was its not Leo's fault," Donatello put it, smiling at his blue masked brother.
"Thanks Donnie," Leonardo said with a smile. Raphael started to speak but before he could get a word out Shen came rushing out of the dojo.
"Be good boys," the dark headed women said, giving each of her sons a kiss as she began to leave for work. "I love you all and I will see you when I get home."
"Bye Mom," the four brothers called out as they watched their mother leave. "We love you too." With that Shen was gone. Little did the four brothers realize that they wouldn't be seeing their mother that night.
