A/N: Because I love these two with all my heart, and I want more Aoko appreciation in the world. Sort of a Timeloop!Au? This will probably be a two-shot series!
Summary: Kaito is often left wondering why Aoko's become so detached from reality. He doesn't realise it's because she's relived the same year over a thousand times.
It doesn't always start off the same.
Sometimes when Aoko opens her eyes she's standing on the roof in between Kaito kid and Snake. She's lived through this scenario over enough times that dying just doesn't quite faze her anymore.
Pandora has become apart of her. The stupid gem's been entangled into her fate, forcing her to replay days over like a recording on a cassette player.
It's happened so many times that she doesn't even remember what she had been doing in the original timeline when she'd gone up on that roof that fateful day. To catch Kaito Kid? She always knew that arrogant thief would lead to her downfall.
Finding out that Kaito was Kaito Kid had originally sent her down a spiral of emotions during her first time waking up from her death. The pain, anger and betrayal had once boiled strong, but the more timelines she'd manage to stumble through, the less she could find any reason to fault him for having to clean up the messes unintentionally left behind with his successor.
Kaito's father had been killed by the same men who had killed her—and who knows how many other people? All for a stupid gem. She sort of wishes they actually did manage to use the gem—see how they liked going through the same days over and over again.
Overtime, her anger towards her best friend fizzled down until there was nothing left. During her original life, Kaito had always been an enigma towards her.
Despite growing up together since childhood, the distance between the two had grown during their last final years of high school—not that she'd gotten the chance to live to her graduation, but the point was still valid nonetheless.
Looking back now, she knew it was because he had taken the mantle of following his father's footsteps in becoming Kaito Kid. The first time he had drifted away from her, she felt as if she had a better chance in chasing the clouds than him ever willingly opening up to her.
But now, It just felt unfair and maddening knowing too much, because he is stuck trying to right the wrongs in an infinite loop that he isn't even aware he's caught up in.
She's relived the day of her death so many times—so many fucking times. She's tried everything to avoid going to that stupid heist, has told herself again and again when staring at the barrel of Snake's gun that 'this will be the last time'.
But she's always the hostage and there's always the gunshot and she's always left dying in Kaito's arms.
Because really, in what world would Nakamori Aoko ever allow any type of harm to come Kaito's way?
Sometimes, that's not even the day she'll relive. Sometimes, she'll open her eyes and she'll be thrown weeks back, other times a whole year.
But she never goes too far back in time, and she never does make it past her death date. There had been times where she had told him the truth beforehand—but it didn't matter, if she was destined to die on that stupid rooftop. The term 'ignorance is bliss' wasn't really something Aoko had taken to heart before she became a walking paradox.
There'd even been a few instances where she's been thrown to the very beginning of this madness. Far enough that she ends up taking up the role of becoming Kaito Kid herself before Kaito can.
In some morbid curiosity, she'd wanted to know what would've happened had the roles been reversed. The first time she'd taken the role of Kaito Kid, she'd managed to seal the entrance way through the painting shut in his bedroom to shelter him from the truth. At the time, she'd been at her wits end to see if it would have any impact on the future.
It never did. By some sick twist in fate he would always be up on that rooftop with her. Whether it be him standing as Kaito Kid or her playing the role. The outcome was always the same in the end. she'd watch his poker face crumble and break and she'd smile, hand shakily trying to cup his face to convey some sort of reassurance before she'd die and be finished with the timeline and move onto the next.
Magic was not her strong suit by all means, but when dying isn't really an issue anymore, she didn't really see any reason not to substitute her study time for other activities. So Aoko went ahead and learned every trick in the book, was able to break down the methods Kaito used in his tricks and eventually after around sixteen timelines she was able to be quite decent in her magic tricks—they weren't on par with Kaito's level but she was still able to breeze through heists as Kaito Kid if she wanted to.
Sometimes, there were days she'd wake up and the numbness would take over. She'd been alive for so long—so fucking long and playing pretend was just so draining.
But staying at home too much meant she'd end up worrying her father and everyone else around her. It didn't matter if she'd end up repeating the same stupid timeline anyway, him being called by the school just seemed like such a hassle. And if he got involved then Kaito most definitely would, so she'd throw on the most genuine smile she could muster and get on with her day.
Nakamori Aoko and Pandora were one. The gem really had given her immortality, but the price of her sanity really wasn't worth it.
She had long since learned to avoid gazing directly into the moon around other people. She'd been mildly horrified when Kaito had grabbed onto her arm to stare intently into her eyes only to ask her if she'd suddenly decided to wear a pair of red contacts.
At first, the question had startled her. It wasn't until she had processed it had her mind made her want to start laughing and crying all at the same time because of course—
Of fucking course she had inherited the gem's stupid ability of turning red when in the moonlight.
It made her feel so bitter, because for Kaito how awful must it be, searching for something and not knowing how close to it you really are. And how cruel was she, for being what he was essentially risking his life for but could never obtain?
Sometimes, she would be so disconnected from reality that Kaito would stare at her with what had used to be an unreadable expression. Now, She could read all his moods like billboard signs, poker face be damned. She'd long since unravelled the mystery of Kuroba Kaito, something which had originally given her many sleepless nights over.
Now? All she wanted to do was shake him over how pointless the task was of capturing pandora. After all, just how was he supposed to steal the jewel if she was the jewel?
Granted, there was a pandora that still existed in this timeline that hadn't been interfered with yet—But Aoko had long realised that she had become a walking paradox. Even if she were to actively not attend the heist, her fate was sealed. She'd close her eyes and open them on that stupid roof.
Still, she couldn't stand the barely concealed gazes of concern everyone seems to be throwing her way lately. So she puts her own poker face on when Kaito appears with tricks that she's already seen many times before and she goes through the motions of screaming in outrage and grabbing the nearest located mop.
She sees the subtleties of tension that she's positive can't be seen by anyone else leave his body once they're playing the game of cat and mouse and she knows she's in the clear for now.
She knows it has to be maddening for him, because each time she reboots, she's not the same Nakamori Aoko he is well acquainted with.
Sometimes, she'll die on that rooftop, and reopen her eyes in a classroom on a random Tuesday morning and he's left confused and calculating. She can see him trying to figure out when she possibly had the time to master the guitar and piano. He's wondering how she's suddenly lost interest in studying for school but is instead hellbent on learning foreign languages. He's left baffled at her sudden desire to splurge her money despite her father being the only working member in her household.
But most of all, he's left with the enigma of wondering why Nakamori Aoko has suddenly gone from having such a strong hatred for Kaito Kid to feeling nothing about him at all.
It's a warm evening and they're almost at the end of their run for this timeline, and for once, her mind just seems to go 'fuck this.'
"Ne, Kaito?" Her lips wrap around the metal straw and she sips her iced coffee.
He gives her a non-committal hum, prompting her to continue as they sat on the hill that wasn't that far from their school. He was occupied by reading something on his phone—a text from Jii-san probably informing him about a possibility in pandora's whereabouts.
Of course, he didn't know yet that this jewel wasn't pandora, but she'd let it slide.
"What do you think immortality would be like?"
Aoko's glad Kaito doesn't have a bad heart. She knows the question probably almost sent him into cardiac arrest.
Kaito turns towards her with his brows furrowed in false annoyance. With the sun setting, the lighting really showed the warmth of his complexion and she couldn't help the fondness bubbling up in her chest as he responded, "That sort of came out of nowhere didn't it?"
She shrugs because from his perspective, yeah the question probably was strange and out of the blue for her to ask all of a sudden. In their original timeline, they had argued over how they were drifting more and more apart and he'd scoff and excuse it all on classwork.
'The world doesn't revolve around you, Ahoko!'
The iced coffee she had in her hand would've once been dumped over his head and she'd been left running home in frustration, with tears dripping down her face.
Present day Aoko just smiles, taking another sip of her drink. "Me and Keiko were thinking of watching that new vampire moving that's about to come out in the summer." She was still mad that she'd die before its release date. The trailer had looked really good. "it got me thinking, vampires are kind of immortal, aren't they?"
Kaito snorts, pocketing his phone and redirecting his attention onto her, "Then shouldn't you be asking me what I'd do if I was a vampire instead?"
She rolls her eyes, leaning her head back and enjoying the feel of the sun "You'd try to seduce everyone into giving up their blood and end up with a lot of restraining orders, probably."
He gawks at her as if what she had spoken was blasphemy, "Aoko, if that was the case we both know I'd have lines of fangirls asking me to bite them—"
Aoko's features soften for a few brief seconds. Kaito has always spoken and behaved in such an animated manner when he was himself. When he was Kaito Kid, the professionalism and his way with words were such a heavy contrast that it still amazed her how flawlessly he was able to pull the persona off.
"Yeah, but we're completely dodging the question here." She startles him in his stupor and Aoko sits back up, leaning against the palm of her hand. "What would you do with immortality?"
Because really, what would Kaito do if he were in her position? Would he handle it better than her?
Kaito's expression is momentarily unreadable before he catches himself and rolls his eyes. "I wouldn't want it."
She hums "Why's that?"
"It's stupid." His phone vibrates in his pocket but he ignores it, "I just don't see the point in being immortal, only for everyone around me to die."
"Yeah." Aoko laughs and it sounds bitter, even to her own ears. Redirecting her gaze away from a bewildered Kaito and back towards the setting sun, she takes a moment to enjoy the soft hues of reds and yellows sprawled overhead. "Immortality sucks."
She's intentionally giving him clues this time around. She's just so fucking tired of reliving the same days over and over again—maybe it'll turn out different this time?
Kaito's still staring at her, probably trying to figure out just what was wrong with her.
"But that's still not answering my question," she huffs, rolling her eyes and turning back towards him. "Work with me here, Bakaito." She grins and wonders if he can see the frustration behind it.
Kaito wasn't an idiot. His intellectual level was extraordinarily high for someone of his age. It wasn't easy pulling off being a renowned phantom thief during the night and performing elaborate schemes surrounded by an audience. Aoko had only been able to pull it off due to repeated exposure and infinite timelines—but Kaito didn't need any of that. Kaito was just Kaito.
"If you were stuck with immortality, what would you do with it?"
He meets her gaze evenly, and Aoko almost stops breathing. "I'd look for a way to end it."
Sometimes, Aoko forgets that Kaito is ridiculously perceptive.
Kaito's been staring at her a lot more lately, and sometimes she sees the downwards tug of his mouth as he tries to piece together what was wrong. As smart as he is, Kaito has always turned his nose up at detectives and it makes her wonder if he'll ever be able to figure it out without her dropping hints for him.
But Kaito is nothing if not a genius. He doesn't need detective skills to realise that something is deeply wrong, but the thought of him sporting a classic Sherlock Holmes outfit makes her snort.
It's the heist for the 'Sapphire eye'. The gem before Pandora, and Aoko can't help but wince at how quickly this timeline would come to an end.
Her eyes scan the task force, before stepping forward towards a familiar face. "Ah, Sawara-san!"
Of course, the real officer Sawara was somewhere locked in a cubicle with no clothes on, but Aoko didn't have a problem with pretending she was none the wiser.
"If it isn't Aoko-chan!" He smiled, politely dipping his cap in greeting and she laughed, "Have you seen my father around? I've got his dinner with me." She sighed, holding up the cute bento box she had prepared.
'Sawara' laughed, "Yeah of course! I'll just go fetch him for you." He grinned towards her before turning around.
Aoko hummed, unsurprised he hadn't just used his radio. "Thanks, Kaito."
She wanted to laugh when he faltered in his steps, before turning to face her in uncertainty, "I beg your pardon?"
She blinked, furrowing her brows "I didn't say anything."
He seemed to nod slowly at that, and Aoko just tilted her head to further display her confusion before he gave her a small smile and walked off.
Aoko couldn't help the giggle from escaping her lips before she turned to glance at the paintings which where on display. Once her father arrived, she was glad she didn't have to stare at the same portraits for long.
"Thank you, dear." Nakamori Keibu grinned down towards her as she handed over his bento for his dinner. "Don't you worry, Aoko! Today's the day we catch that no good thief once and for all!"
Aoko smiled "Of course you will! Don't show him any mercy, dad!" she cheered as if she hadn't already stolen the gem in a previous timeline, long ago.
She really was a terrible daughter.
It's when she's left to her own devices does Aoko take her time in going up the stairs. Evading the police task force hadn't been easy the first few times, but Aoko had long since memorised every escape route the building had to offer.
It wouldn't really do her any good to get into too much trouble just yet—she really didn't need to be mistaken for Kid and get dog pilled on. Though, there also still was a few weeks left until Pandora would show itself.
Did it really matter in the long run if she did get in trouble? It would all get reset straight after anyway.
"Maybe in the next timeline I'll become a trouble maker." She snorted at the thought before making her way into the elevator alone. "Maybe I'll skip school and join a biker gang." Rolling her eyes at her own delusions, Aoko eyed the carpeted floor. She knew if she peeled it back, there'd be a hidden compartment filled with some of Kid's gadgets for escaping later in case something went wrong.
By the time she makes it to the top floor, she doesn't even bother with glancing at the gem on display in the middle of the room, opting for staring out the glass walls instead and silently admiring the city from above.
She's been loitering around for a while now, before perking up to an announcement being spoken through the small speakers surrounding the hall. She distractedly realised that there were a lot more officers up here than when she'd arrived.
Two of them began ushering her and a few other civilians back down the stairs, sending them away from the chaos that was about to ensue.
She'd barely made it two floors down before all the lights in the building shut off.
Kaito Kid was here.
Tokyo's night air was crisp, and despite the goosebumps that ran up her bare arms, Aoko couldn't help but breath it all in leisurely. There weren't many stars, due to the light pollution, and the moon was still mostly covered by the clouds, so the view wasn't really that outstanding.
Distantly, she could make out some of the noise of the task force upstairs, before wincing at the sound of her father screeching.
"YOU NO GOOD PHANTOM THIEF!"
Leaning against the rail of the balcony, Aoko raises her gaze upward, unfazed by the sight of Kid's dummy flying off into the distance. There's loud curses being spewed (she has no doubt that they're from her dad), before a few moments later police cars begin filling up downstairs.
Despite being a tremendously high up, Aoko can still hear her father's orders being screeched as the flooding of police cars begin raging into the direction that the dummy was headed.
"Poor dad," Aoko sighed, frowning "His blood pressure's definitely sky rocketed from all of this."
"Nakamori Keibu really should be mindful of it, really." Kid said nonchalantly from behind.
Aoko blinks and when she turns to face him, she's met with a blue rose being presented towards her. It doesn't take much thought to accept the flower and idly twirl it in her hand.
There was once a time where her face would've screwed up in disgust at the sight. Oh how the mighty fall.
"Kaito Kid, a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Nakamori-san." He allowed a deceivingly charming smile to spread across his lips, and Aoko was certain he was probably baffled as to why she was chilling in one of his escape routes.
Aoko hums, twirling the rose once more before securing it behind her ear. "As it should be." She smiles before turning back to admire the night sky.
There's silence after that, but she doesn't find it unbearable.
"You don't seem surprised by my appearance." He notes before calmly standing besides her to mirror her actions.
She knows she's being unfair to Kaito, but shrugs anyway. "Should I be? This is your heist, it'd be more surprising if you didn't know up."
Kid stares, and she knows that hidden behind his façade, he's in disbelief.
There's another short silence before she hears ruffling. She glances over when he brings out the sapphire eye from his pocket and Aoko spins, leaning her back against the rail instead as she watches him hold it up to the moon.
Aoko's features soften when he brings it back down. "Not what you were looking for?"
He turns towards her sharply at that and Aoko tilts her head, her brown locks flowing as she does so.
"I suppose not." He shrugs, pocketing the gem and preparing his glider.
They don't have much time before the task force realise that they're chasing a dummy. It makes Aoko chew on her bottom lip in thought.
Would it be worth it? The next heist would be where Kaito would find pandora.
"I have a question for you, before you go." She says, exhaling slowly and mentally preparing herself.
Kid regards her passively, and she can practically see the cogs turning in his brain "by all means Nakamori-san, do tell."
Well, it wasn't like she had anything left to lose.
"What would you do with immortality?"
Even with his poker face on, Aoko catches his posture tense up immediately and all alarms go off in her brain.
This is a bad idea—this is a terrible, terrible idea.
"…That's an odd thing to ask, Nakamori-san." He says slowly. "May I ask what brought this on?"
She almost snorts at the question, but opts for offering him a small, apologetic smile. "You'll understand in a minute, I promise. But humour me?"
There's a beat of silence.
"I wouldn't want it."
Aoko inhales slowly. "Then stop looking for it."
His gaze was sharp and calculated immediately, "How do you—"
Both their phones beep, making them tense up and Aoko hisses at the time. "You need to go, the task force have probably realised they're chasing a dummy."
By now, Kid's bewildered as Aoko reaches into his suit blazer and effortlessly hits the switch for his hang glider "Here, give me the gem. I'll sort out putting it back and even leaving a dumb note to go along with it—just go."
She holds out her hand expectantly and Kid stares at her for a few moments before handing her the Sapphire eye. Aoko spins around to head back inside immediately, her brain already whirling to remember where Kid's emergency supplies where hidden.
"You realise, this conversation isn't over Nakamori-san."
She turns towards him from the doorway, moonlight hitting her and Kid's breath gets caught in his throat at the sight of redredred.
Aoko blinks, eyes now crimson as opposed to the sapphire blue he was used to seeing. "Drop by my window later. It's not like you're a stranger to where I live." She flashes him a smile before disappearing through the large doors.
For once, Kid was rendered speechless.
Aoko yawns, eyes bleary as she pours herself a cup of steaming coffee. She follows it by pouring in her milk and spoons in the sugar before stirring it in thought.
Her father wasn't home yet, despite the clock being close to hitting three am, but Kid's heist did start at midnight so it wasn't really that odd for him not to be back.
Forcing back another yawn, she narrowed her eyes towards the remaining coffee in the pot, debating whether or not to pour another mug for Kaito if he decided to show up as kid.
Pros; If he did show up, he'd at least have a nice caffeinated beverage. Cons; if he didn't show up she'd have to drink two cups of coffee on a school night and wash both the mugs.
She'd truly landed herself in a pickle.
He'd show wouldn't he?
Aoko gnawed on her bottom lip once more before five minutes later she was walking up the stairs with two steaming cups of coffee.
Hot chocolate would've been nicer but it wasn't like either of them would be sleeping tonight after the stunt she'd pulled. Balancing the mugs in her hand and with some determination, Aoko managed to hit the switch with her pinky finger and almost screamed bloody murder at the sight of Kaito kid relaxing against her window sill.
Aoko openly gawked at him. "Are you crazy?! Who the hell just sits in the dark?! Jesus—you almost gave me a heart attack."
She shook her head, willing her heartbeat to go back down to its regular pace as she thrusted his mug of coffee into his chest sitting down onto her bed.
Kid blinked, seemingly stunned by the gesture as he held onto the beverage.
There was a tense silence building up that Aoko didn't like. She sipped on her coffee, willing it to go away. Why had she opened her mouth? She should've just played her role in giving her father's dinner and left.
But god, she was so tired. So unbelievably tired of repeating the same motions.
"You did an exceptional job with returning the gem, Nakamori-san." He suddenly interrupts her train of thought. "Even the note you'd left had been plausible. There was no evidence leading back to you either." He tilts his head, eyebrow raised.
"It was all to the extent that if I wasn't Kaito Kid, even I would've believed that the sapphire eye had been returned by him."
She blinks. His coffee remained untouched on the end of the window sill, and his arms were crossed as he gazed towards her, expression unreadable.
Aoko doesn't really know how to respond to that, and it sort of thrills her.
How long had it been to the last time she could go through a conversation that wasn't scripted?
For all of her bravado, the brunette doesn't really know how to steer this conversation. She'd been giving him hints to help break the ice for weeks, but even then—
Even she wouldn't be able to predict the outcome of his reaction.
Was she to start by telling him she knew who he was? Should she start by saying she was basically pandora?
Crap. She hadn't thought this through enough.
"You haven't touched your drink." She blurts out, instead. "It'll get cold if you leave it there."
She didn't know if he was planning to skip school the next morning or what, but by all means, he really should've been scarfing the beverage down.
Kid blinks and they're both left in another tense silence before he starts chuckling—Aoko watches in astonishment as he throws back his head and laughs. "You really are a mystery, Nakamori-san!"
He takes a few strides forward, before he's in front of her. His laughter died down to a more eery atmosphere. It sends chills down her spine, and Aoko can't help but swallow as he bent low, directly face to face with her.
"As lovely as the gesture is, we both know that I didn't just come by for a cup of coffee." His eyes catch onto the rose that had fallen from behind her ear at some point during the night, and got caught in her hair. Aoko's breath gets caught in her throat as he brings his hands up to fix it effortlessly.
The closeness has her cheeks heat up, and she stubbornly brings the mug up to her lips to take long sips of the stuff to calm down her heart.
…Then again, this was caffeine, so it probably wouldn't do anything to soothe her nerves.
Aoko clears her throat, mind racing.
This was supposed to be a very serious conversation—she didn't know why it was so hard to stay on track of things.
"Where do you want to start?"
Kid leans back, stepping into his nonchalant façade as he twirls around her room, pretending to be interested in the collage of pictures she had on her wall as if he hadn't seen it a million times before. "How about the whole immortality question you asked back there, hm?"
Aoko inwardly winces at that. There really wasn't a way she could figure out how to let him down easy. "You're not going to like the answer." She says, sighing and casting aside her now empty mug.
Kid turns towards her, crossing his arms and Aoko wants to roll her eyes. "You told me to stop looking for it Nakamori-san. You clearly know more than you're letting on."
"…Why don't I try painting a picture for you?" she asks instead, getting up to her feet. She sits him down before going to occupy his previous place by the window. "You're searching for a gem that grants immortality." She breathes shakily as Kid studies her.
There's another beat of silence. "I am."
"There's also some other creepy men looking for it, aren't they?" she pulls the curtains apart before she turns towards him. Kid freezes.
"So, let's say in some distant world you found pandora." Aoko begins, hands shaking as she went across the room to hit the light switch off. Immediately, the room was bathed in moonlight and just by his expression alone, Aoko knew her eyes were not the shade of blue he was used to.
"So Kid finds pandora. The only problem is, those bad men are up there too—but they're not alone, they have a hostage." Stepping towards him, Aoko slowly found herself prying the top hat off of him and placing it besides him before she does the same with his monocle.
Kid doesn't make any move to stop her and Aoko smiles shakily as she cups his face, tilting his head slightly up so that he was staring directly at her. "The hostage, believe it or not turns out to be Kaito Kid's childhood friend." She laughs, but there's no humour behind it.
"The bad man on the roof has a gun and Kid has the gem he's been searching so long and hard for to destroy." Aoko sniffs, softly brushing her thumbs against his cheeks. "So now, Kid's faced with the choice of either watching his friend die, or giving up the gem."
Aoko doesn't really realise her vision's been blurred with tears until Kid's brushing them away for her as they drip down her chin. "You don't even think about it." She laughs, feeling hollow as she leans away to wipe her tears herself. "You do it every time—you just drop pandora and kick it over to Snake without second thought."
"Every time?" his voice is barely audible, and when she brings herself to look at him, Kaito is deathly pale. She can practically see him connecting the dots and reaching the horrible, horrible conclusion.
She's changed far too drastically in such a short amount of time. It breaks her heart seeing that he understands the implications.
"I die that night." Aoko states, swallowing thickly. "Snake shoots me, but he gets captured pretty fast. There's always some kid with a soccer ball around, and another guy with a Kansai dialect." She shakes her head, refocusing her train of thought. "I always end up dying in your arms, but—"
Kaito stares at her, unable to hide his horror as the realisation occurs. "I used pandora on you."
Aoko nods, not knowing why she was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions. "Immortality comes with a price, Kaito." She smiles apologetically, "It made me immortal, yeah. But not in the way anyone would've expected it to."
"…You, You're—"
"We're all stuck in a time loop, where I'm the only one who remembers." Aoko blurts out, playing with the hem of her shirt to try and calm down her nerves while Kaito's mouth goes dry.
She squeaks when he abruptly gets to his feet, gripping onto her shoulders as if he's afraid she'll disappear in front of his eyes. "Aoko, how long have you been like this?!"
"I've lost count." Aoko shrugs, "For this timeline? I started around a couple months after you became Kid."
Kaito is speechless but they've come too far for her to take everything back. Aoko licks her lips. "Kaito, when you used the gem on me that night, it didn't just make me immortal."
His eyes are wide and terrified, it makes Aoko want to take back everything she's said tonight. The only other time he's had a similar expression was when she was dying in his arms. It makes her want to hurry up and end the stupid timeline so that he could go back to being blissfully ignorant.
"Aoko." He starts, voice grave "What did I do?"
She hesitates for a moment, clenching both of her fists before relaxing them and managing to bring herself to gaze at him levelly. "I became pandora."
And like glass, his heart shattered.
